Took these boots out to Mt Diablo (8 mile hike) and the Marin headlands (4 mile hike). Oddly the fit on the right shoe was different than the left. Seemed a bit smaller than true to size so got a small blister on my pinky the first few wears as I broke them in. My left foot was completely fine. Had light rain during one of the hikes and while I wore them in SF. Kept my feet nice and dry, though the fabric on the outside of the shoe did get really wet and they stunk a bit for a few days. I was also surprised that the gusseted tongue did not fully extend to the top of the shoe. Ended up with some extra debris and rocks in my shoe which was a bit annoying but not that big of an issue. The shoe was light but it looked bulky.
I received this product just the other day and was really excited to test it out. Salomon states that it is a waterproof hiking boot best used on easy paths, mixed terrain, muddy, and wet terrain. Right now, we’re having heavy rainfall in my area, making all hiking trails a sloppy wet mess; the perfect environment for testing these boots. To start, the appearance looks clean and well constructed. There is aggressive tread and a plastic arch and ankle support in the soles. That being said, the padding on the tongue of the boot is pretty thick and probably the only thing I am not a huge fan of. That is appearance only and my own personal preference. The trail on which these boots were tested was super wet. I climbed rocks and hills, streams and dirt, and tried to defeat the waterproofing with reckless abandon. I found them to be very comfortable and supportive on all terrain. Even with the wet environment, I was able to climb on sloped, wet rock with no issues. I was most impressed with the boot’s waterproofing ability. In shallow puddles I could see that water would bead up and fall off. After stomping through puddles for awhile, I stepped into a flowing stream with about 4 inches of water. I waited for about 5 minutes for the water to enter the boot before I was bored. Even after losing balance and stepping into the stream deeper than the boot’s top only a small amount of water came through. These boots appear tough and reliable, just as advertised. If you’re looking for boots that will take you on the kinds of trails I have described, you won’t be disappointed.
These boots are super! I took them out on the Croatan National Forest for a bit of exploring and they were just right for the conditions. First off they are super padded and cushy which made them comfortable to wear. I had them paired up with some Darn Tough full cushion hiking socks and I didn’t have any problems with overheating or getting sweaty granted it’s been pretty mild weather. There isn’t much topography out here but I did walk up and down some cut banks to test out the grip and I didn’t have any problems with slipping. The lugs on the sole are incredibly deep, almost resembling cleats. I did encounter some puddles which I stepped straight in to test out the waterproofing and i my feet did stay dry. However, I’m not sure how they would hold up to prolonged exposure to water and I didn’t stand around to find out. The boots look pretty slick as well and the colors will be pretty easy to match with most outdoor brand apparel. I received these boots from REI to conduct a thorough review and I hope this information is helpful!
So far I have gone on 2 different hikes with these boots. I do have between a normal and slightly wide foot and after about 2 miles I could felt the side of my left foot starting to blister a bit and overall was just kind of bothering me throughout the hike. So I was not too happy with that. However, on another hike I decided to give these a try again and I guess maybe I just needed to break them in a bit more, because I didn't have any of the issues I did on the first hike. The shoes felt good and snug, but I did get a bit more dirt in them than I expected to. It was a pretty wet morning and these had no problem gripping on any of the pretty slippery terrain. They did get a bit wet, but my socks stayed dry the entire time which was nice. I've owned other boots that claimed to be waterproof but still ended up getting the tips of my sock wet at some point. These did not. I have a few more hikes planned that I'm hoping really help fully break in these boots to where they become a bit more comfortable. Some other comments mention the laces breaking and while I haven't had that happen yet they definitely do feel a bit on the thin side and I can see how this could possibly become an issue. It has happened to me on other boots before so I always keep some spares at home.
Salomon continues to make shoes that hold up to the elements and excel at their intended feats to overcome. Will I come back for more from Salomon? Absolutely, I like these shoes, but I don't love them. 1. They're true to size, allow for a comfortable amount of toe splay, but not too much, but the insoles are minimal at best. They don't abrade the ankles like other high tops might, and they pair well with a pair of medium thickness wool socks. 2. Lacing and tightening is easy, the metal lace hooks aren't too bulky and are quick to thread. HOWEVER, it's very easy to over-tighten if you're not careful. The person wearing the shoes will notice over-tightening around the front of the arch on the medial aspect of the boot. This leads me to my main issues with these boots -> 3. The waterproof construction folds aggressively in that medial aspect toward the arch. Is it a deal breaker? No, they're good boots, they are very waterproof up to about the fourth lace hook. I believe in ensuring the stability of these shoes, that aggressive fold comes from the density of the construction and the movement of the foot as you walk around. Standing upright and still doesn't raise concern for this particular issues, but walking on pavement/flat surfaces is when you notice it most. Not really meant for the urban dweller or indoors-y type. Running around a hospital for 16 hours accentuated my frustration with this little fold, despite the shoes feeling absolutely perfect otherwise. 4. They're kinda indestructible? I say this loosely, of course, but I definitely beat them up in some mud, snow, trekking on slick/frozen rocks, through just about everything you'd anticipate putting them through. Despite breaking them in, the fold persists (less so, but still present). 5. Would I suggest these boots? Yeah, they're definitely suitable for outdoor, waterproof needs. You don't notice the spoken-about fold much when you're trekking around trails. They're comfortable, reasonably priced, and grippy as heck. If you have sensitivity issues, maybe they're not the boot for you.
These hiking boots are wonderful! They check many boxes and are so close to perfect that they almost deserved 5 stars. There are some shortcomings for me particularly however that keep this boot from a 5/5. FUNCTIONALITY I took these on multiple rainy-day hikes and these boots withstood the largest of puddles and mud (I *purposely * stomped through several massive puddles and mud pits to test this, and I can confirm that the gore-tex is functional and not merely a brand name drop). The tread is also functional - doesn't slip on muddy hills so that's what it's supposed to do, right? Laces are very easy to lace up and down, shoe is easy to slip on and off. Overall build quality is durable - but I could see the glue between the sole and boot wearing down over time. DESIGN The color is a little more saturated, and value a little lighter than I was expecting. I work as an Art Director, and a as a result my job of color coordinating things at work also bleeds into me color coordinating everything else in my life, often to the detriment of not considering products solely based on their color. (I love it I promise.) For hiking and camping gear I aim for neutrals and naturals (browns, grays, desaturated greens, sometimes more saturated tan/brown). When I saw these shoes, I assumed they look like they do on the website; naive me. Nothing looks like it does on the website! (Surprised I haven't learned this by now.) As you can see in the pictures, the top portion of the shoe is a much darker, bluer green vs. the almost forest green on the site. The Sage green is almost white in person. The duotone of the shoe is much further apart in value than is shown online. How important is this for a hiking shoe? I don't know, I like to color coordinate and maybe you do too. Other than that the design of the shoe is top-tier Salomon design language that looks great on almost everyone's feet. FIT This is what knocked it down a star. These shoes are unexpectedly a little narrow, and don't offer nearly as much arch support as I would've expected in a hiking boot. Fit is highly personal to the individual, but I have normal width feet and these shoes felt a tad uncomfortable with their narrowness (again, see pictures). I do have a fairly high arch, so not surprised about the lack of arch support, but I would love to see a slightly wider variation of this boot in future generations. OVERALL - great boot, color and fit was a little unexpected, but I am ecstatic to take these on more adventures.
Dear Salomon Customer Service Team, I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the quality of a pair of Salomon hiking shoes I recently purchased. After a single hike, I noticed that the shoes were covered in dirt that I am unable to remove, despite repeated cleaning attempts. Additionally, there are black marks on the shoes that have become permanent and cannot be eliminated. Given Salomon's reputation for high-quality outdoor gear, I am deeply disappointed by this experience. I hope you will consider my concerns seriously and provide an appropriate solution, such as approving a quality check and possible replacement of these shoes. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. mik
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. So far I enjoyed these shoes greatly, they have fantastic water resistance and did not have any blistering as I broke them in. Fit true to size and ordered my usual size for running shoes. Also grip held up well in the mud and slipping was minimal. Breathability was decent considering they are GoreTex. Farthest hike I have wore them on so far is about 5 miles and feet felt pretty good at the end.
Overall good experience with these shoes, cushioning and traction feel good and supported and the shoe is very lightweight. However, the toe box of the shoe runs narrow. Typically I size at an 11 wide/ 11.5. I found that the size 11.5 was too long, and although 11 fit me well, once I was on my feet for longer the size tended not to workout as well. I encountered issues near the end of the day on downhill and downclimbs, rubbing on the pinky toe despite different lacing styles to open up the toe box. Most likely going to be more of shorter day hikes shoe and would consider something else for a longer hike.
I have had these for about a month now, and they are comfortable but poor/cheaply made. The top eyelet on one shoe pulled out after two weeks of almost daily wear, and the nylon lace eyelets are being cut by the nylon-on-nylon sawing of hiking and running. If you wear these shoes on weekends to hike, they will last a season. If you hike and train every day, they will need to be replaced in two months. I also have a pair of the low-cut version, and the same thing happened with the nylon eyelets in only a few days. I had to jerry-rig some eyelets out of p-cord so they wouldn't fall off my feet on a steep descent.
