I was really hoping this would be a perfect substitute for the classic (heavy, not particularly lightweight or compact) camp chair, but it is not. The seat height, back, and having cupholder armrests fueled my optimism that these would be as comfortable as the 10+ year old chairs I bought from Wally World 15 years ago. The Big Six Armchair is not nearly as comfortable and falls short for several reasons (I'm typing this from the chair). The first shortcoming is the seat pan. It's too short and doesn't support my legs at all. When sitting upright, it only extends about 4 inches from my crotch. When I sit back, that shrinks to 3. This is not a seat for tall people. Next is the seat pan angle. It's too flat, makes an effort to recline into the seatback feel awkward. I weigh 175#, and the chair is new. The arm rest height is good, but they are as short as the seat pan, and not really usable if you have a drink or phone in the holder. Plusses include BA quality, great height, and quality engineering and materials, but I won't use these for concerts or other leisure activities over the classic style chairs as I had hoped. A small woman may find this a better fit than an average guy who's 6' tall.
The only reason I gave this chair 4 stars instead of 5 is because the back isn't very straight - BUT I knew that going in. I have been looking for a chair that folds up small for car camping. The arms are fine - ignore any reviews that say they slip off - they are using the PULL TAB instead of the pocket! There literally is NO WAY the arms will slip off (I suppose if you tipped over while sitting in chair?) I like how tall the seat of this chair is off the ground & it does have more of a 'scoop' seat as pictured as opposed to a flat seat. The length of the seat was fine for me - I noticed another person felt it was too short. I have long (ish) legs, too - inseam of 33" (I'm 5'9"). It is NOT difficult to put together although it does take a little longer than unfolding a cheap chair. I suppose it could tip over in a wind but I wouldn't leave it up overnight anyway. Or just put something in the seat if you want to. The bar across the head - it doesn't bother me but then I don't plan on leaning my head back against the chair either. Since it isn't quite as straight as I'd like I put a pillow on my back - then it's perfect. Great chair for a reasonable price. Love the small size (not for backpacking) and definitely recommend!
I was so excited to get this chair last night! I immediately brought it in and started the assembly, which was more than I expected. Putting the frame together I saw that it was very stable/solid. But then...There was NO WAY to fit the fabric part of the chair onto the frame. It needed another 2 inches of fabric to even reach the attachment points. It was impossible to put together so back it goes today! Another point that doesn't matter, since I'm not keeping it: It needs to be totally taken apart and put together each time. We like to stow our current chairs under the picnic table, just folding them. This needs to be disassembled. Not user-friendly at all. Again, I am so disappointed.
I pulled it out of the box, followed the setup instructions, sat down in it, and the armrests slipped. It's just a single loop holding the armrest to the pole, nothing to keep it moving side to side and sliding down the curve. It drove me crazy trying to get it to stay put. The left did slip easier than the right. Maybe it was sewn at a weird angle. Anyway, it's not something I'd have a friend sit in, so I won't be keeping it
ARM SLEEVE POCKETS are found UNDER Arm Rest & must be used for proper arm attachment. (Please do not attach arm rest via Finger Loops) Great Chair! I'm Buying a set!
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this chair. Other reviews are just nit-picking IMHO. I see no issue at all. Sets up and breaks down super easy. It’s clearly very well made and tough - should last a long time if taken care of. Super comfy, armrests are nice, bucket seat. It’s not a backpacking chair by any means, much too heavy for that, but it’s compact/light enough (compared to normal camping chairs) and for car/van/general use, it’s clutch.
Ignore some of the 1 stars that talk about the arms moving. Those are just 1 star people who are too stupid to put the arms on correctly and then trash this product as a result of their own incompetence. I am a larger guy and this chair supports me very well. Best comfort to size+weight of any chair I have tested (20+ chairs). Easy to set up and plenty of toom in the bag to pack it back in. Sits at a nice height too.
While REI didn’t have any reviews for this chair, others do exist online. I will say that if you’re pondering this purchase and are deterred by reviews that talk anything about how the arm rests don’t attach to the rod or the arm rests slide slide down and out of place or the one guy I saw that said he needed zip ties…they are assembling the chair wrong. Current design could not make it more obvious that there are designated pockets to slide each arm rest pole into. In terms of chair review - I give it full marks for light small bag / size profile. Bag has two loops on it. Easy to carabiner clip to a back pack. Very easy to break down and slides into travel bag easily (this is not an air mattress situation where the only time it fits into the carry bag is at time of purchase). I like how the pole assembly is all one piece. Each segment has bungee chords keeping the structure together when collapsed, exactly like tent poles. The only other piece is the fabric. Full disclosure I am very early into chair ownership. Took it out for first real word test this AM. First set up - the fabric is very tight and it will take just a smidge of effort to stretch into position. I’ve sat in it a bit and I can already feel the fabric stretching and softening a bit, so imagine after a few more uses it will get a little easier to put together. Now - why four stars and not five? I’m not a huge guy (5”10”) and even though again maybe the fabric will stretch over time, I do find the arm rests at least right now dig into my forearms when I’m sitting there. Just because of the tension once chair is assembled and you’re sitting in it and the fabric is taught. I also think the top bar that touches the back of your head isn’t the most comfortable. I think the chair is a good height from the ground and otherwise is what I was hoping for. But just noting that if you’re imagining the softness of a folding Coleman steel rod camp type chair, this isn’t quite that. It’s super light and compact but you’ll trade that off a bit for a little less comfort.
It’s hard reading the one star reviews. Similar to what other reviewers said, this chair is so easy to set up that it is hard to imagine someone can mess up. Just follow the order of putting the seat on the poles (back rest, then seat, then arm rests). And put the arm rests not through the loops but a small reinforced pocket. I’m 6’0” and 185lbs and this chair fits like a glove. Sits a little higher than my kelty low seat, has a high back rest so I can lean my head on it, and the arm rests help as the big six without arm rests force you to either hang your arms outside, awkwardly lean them on the sides, or put them on your lap. Great for car camping when you don’t have lots of room to spare in your vehicle.
I’ve had my eye on this chair for quite some time, because of its size and weight (I camp in a very small van with limited space). Purchased it on a great sale and tried it on a recent trip. It lived up to expectations as a lightweight, comfortable and attractive (love the pattern) chair with the added bonus of being tall enough that I could lean my head back and watch the night sky. To make sky watching more comfortable I attached a camp pillow as a headrest using a long Velcro strap to attach it to the chair, which worked very well. The main drawback that other reviewers have noted and why I gave it four stars, is 1) the setup and takedown are a tad cumbersome, taking more time than it does with a traditional heavier camp chair, and 2) its’ light weight makes it vulnerable to flight in windy conditions (but I solved that by putting my footstool in the seat when I vacated it). In rainy conditions and overnight I simply remove the fabric seat and store it in the van. The chair is well made and the arm rests are quite comfortable for a small woman. I look forward to using it for many years.
