The Perfect Hiking Boot

After researching many hiking boots I went w/ these. They are incredibly light, comfortable, supportive & do not make my feet overheat w/ the GTX (a big concern of mine). Darn tough socks feel great, but they also allow room for thicker hiking socks while still allowing my toes to splay out nicely. Colors are also very earthy & beautiful in person. I went w/ the 9 (toes hit the end w/ 8. These are the sizes I take in other boots for reference: Danner Mounrain 600 - 8 Oboz Sypes mid - 9 Merrell Moab 3 mid - 8.5 Columbia Newton Ridge (old waxed canvas version) - 8.5

Defective pair

I loved the fit and support, but unfortunately the fabric lace eyelet broke the first time I wore them. I was at a trailhead. It seems like weak workmanship and not enough eyelets across the shoe for support and strain distribution. I can’t have this happen again out on the trail so I’ll be looking for a different type of shoe.

No breaking in required

I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. Very comfortable right off the bat - no breaking in required. I'm normally a 6.5 - 7, but sized up to a 7.5 since I have wide feet and the larger sizes give a bit more toe box room. This worked out perfectly for me - sized up with room for my toes yet my foot wasn't sliding all over the place when going downhill. I do worry that the part around my ankle will start rubbing against that protruding ankle bone, but it was fine for ~1 hour of hiking. The goretex is solid and prevents water AND dirt from getting in. A few things I wish were different - I wish it had just one more row of hooks for the shoelaces - the height hit awkwardly for me (see ankle comment), and my foot would just feel more secure with an additional row to tighten around my ankles for more support. I also found that these aren't as cushiony and pilllowy as some of the newer boots that are coming out, so you'll feel more of the ground than those, which I personally don't mind. The goretex is great for water and dirt, but it also means your foot won't breathe, so I found it really hot in the sun.

Amazing traction and good ankle support

Straight out of the box, I was planning on only doing a short hike to break them in but these boots felt so lightweight and comfortable that I ended up hiking from 5am-7pm (on non-technical terrain) and I had no hotspots at all! The grip was what I noticed first. It was foggy and wet, with muddy puddles and condensation dripping from the trees. Despite that, I could stand almost vertically on the side of sandstone and not slip. I’d definitely wear these for scrambling on rock! The sandstone was damp but sandstone is typically a very grippy, textured rock so to really put it to the test, I climbed a smooth, wet root structure and didn’t slip once! The flat laces allow for tightening at different points depending on your foot shape and support needs but honestly, I just had even tightness and made sure to use the pair of hooks at the top. Interestingly, the tag that was attached to the shoe said to make sure and use both pairs of hooks (4 hooked eyelets per shoe) however the design of this shoe only has 2. The cushion at the top felt really comfortable and snug and I could really feel it hugging the inside of my ankle. That being said, due to the thickness of the cushion and that the younger has room to pull away from the boot at the top, you can’t make it very tight to keep dirt and small rocks out. After hiking in the forest at a higher elevation, I went down the cliffs to the beach and then came back up and walked on some trees. At the end of the day, I did have some dirt and small debris in the boots which snuck in from the top of the boot and the top of the front. While the sole and area that encompasses the toe and all around the lower portion of the shoe is waterproof, the front top is made of a kind of layered mesh material. This is great for breathability but it does let in dirt particles. I could say weather the dampness in my socks were due to perspiration only or if any of the canopy rain got in from the mesh. These are negligible things for me on day hikes, but for a multi day trek in wet or snowy areas, I’d lean more towards a boot with coverage that spans the top all the way to the laces, picture the level of coverage duck boots have, (can be leather, you’d just have to spray with Kiwi waterproofing), because you frequently step into mud and the moisture would seep into the mesh quickly. For me, the cushion around the ankles and added comfort and support outweighs any dirt that might get in from the top because for anything more than a day hike, I wear gaiters over my boots to prevent rain, dirt, and ticks getting in, so it’s not an issue. I also appreciate the cut of the shoe in the back which swoops down lower as the design takes into account an area that can rub (above your Achilles tendon) and helps to avoid chafing and blistering. Overall these are great boots and I’d love to see them release additional colors for women. I plan on wearing these lightweight boots for when I go hiking in the canyons of Arizona because they are breathable and the heel-to-toe traction gives me confidence in every foot placement.

No real break in period - 12 miles on first hike!

"I received this product free in exchange for an honest review." This shoe is lite, stable, comfortable arch and toe box and sole excellent grip - important after several foot/knee injuries. The stability in the arch and ankle were better than expected. We hike/backpack in an area with a lot of lava rock, granite and wet surfaces - these maintained excellent grip. I do wish these had an additional set of rivets at the top as there is a bit of a wide gap which causes the tongue to bunch up. The soft color palate makes these fashionable as well!

Comfy and lightweight

Love the desert color scheme! First impressions: I love how light weight the shoe is, yet the sole is very rugged. Perfect for my all day hikes. Something i also really liked is how easy it is to take off these hiking shoes after a long day. The tongue pulls up / out easily so it's quick to slip out after a long day. I'm normally a size 7.5/8 for non hiking shoes, so 8.5 was perfect for me to accommodate for down hill and slight swelling. I have narrow feet and they were the perfect fit. I also liked that the shoes themselves have a bit of arch support already, so when I forgot my arch inserts one time, it was no problem.

A solid hiking option

I have received and tested the Salomon Women's X Ultra 360 Edge Mid GORE-TEX Hiking Boots in shortbread/raw umber/prairie sunset size 9. I wasn't keen on the color combo. They verge on white, and I tend to opt for darker colors most typically. This is a well made solid shoe with good support. I initially tried these on with basic socks, but felt rubbing from the collar of the shoe on my ankles. Switched to a higher hiking sock, and this situation resolved quickly . I took them for the first test drive on the high prairie, so lots of dry spiky plants, sand, and occasionally water. My feet stayed clean and dry, and the stability on uneven surfaces was quite good. Hooks on the upper neck of the shoe allow for customization in fit, which is appreciated. Would recommend product for others based on fit, comfort, durability, and stability. Personally, would like to see some other color options, and the need for hiking socks for comfort is notable .

Lightweight support where you need it!

Super soft and super supportive pair of hiking boots! I absolutely love the way these feel when I'm walking. It's almost like I'm not even wearing boots! I wish I'd stumbled upon something like these sooner. I'm super excited to test these out on the trails this summer!

Mud ain't no problem

Took these baddies on a ton of dog walks and hikes ranging from 2-8 miles, elevation gain 500-1400'. Even wore them in the office because Alaska. Not much break in required, but only comfortable for my feet with Smartwool hiking socks. Kept my feet dry in the mud. Normally I'm a size 7.5 and these were true to size. Slightly different color than in the photos -- reminds me of a muted Neapolitan ice cream. I'm personally not too crazy about the color combo, but overall a solid hiking boot. Can't wait for more trails to open up (there's still some snow)!

Fantastic Hiking Boot for a Variety of Conditions

Overall, I have really enjoyed these hiking boots so far. I’ve hiked about 15-20 miles in them including sandy/gravely terrain; steep, rocky trails; through shallow, moving water; and light mud. They are officially my go-to boots for hiking trails in Colorado! Fit and comfort: I have a slightly narrow foot and wear a size 8.5. These boots fit me true to size. The slightly wider toe box gives my toes room to spread without being too loose. I find these shoes to be very comfortable on long hikes. My first hike, there was a little bit of rubbing on my big toe after 5-6 miles. After that though, they’ve been perfect. Function: These boots have really good ankle support and feel very sturdy on rocky hikes. The grip is really good and I experienced less slippage than I would in my other hiking boots, even on steep, gravely terrain. I was pleasantly surprised by how water resistant they are. I tested them out in a stream that was a couple inches deep and not a drop of water got through the boot. So far, I’ve only worn these boots in warm/hot weather and my feet have never gotten sweaty. I am not sure how they would do in cold weather but based on the light insulation, I personally would NOT wear these for a below-freezing, snowy hike. Looks and quality: I like the brown/tan/peach color combo- it’s a little unique but they still look like a hiking boot. They have also held up really well after a couple of rougher hikes. All the materials (including the soles, the shoes, and the laces) seem very high quality which I’ve come to expect from Salomon. Based on wear and tear so far, I think these boots will likely last through many miles of epic hiking!

Great Lightweight Hiking Boot

I was surprised with how comfortable these boots were right out of the box - I didn't need to break them in at all, they were ready to go! I wore them for a few day hikes and also creeking with my kids. No blisters, no hot spots, no rubbing, and my feet stayed dry (although a little hot on the day hikes - you sacrifice some breathability for being waterproof, which is worth it to me). They were stable with good ankle support, but I would have liked a second set of hooks to tighten it up even further (there is only one hook at the top). They are very lightweight but still supportive, overall a really great boot!
