The Awesome Snow Peak Teppanyaki Burner
The Teppanyaki Burner from Snow Peak is absolutely the best outdoor cooking setup I've ever used! If you are a true gourmet cook at heart (which I admit I'm not), then you will especially enjoy the ease of setup and simple push-button flame ignition as well as the very fine adjustment of the heat output and uniformity. I found these features made my outdoor cooking tasks much easier to complete without burning, especially from the 'hot spots' I typically get from smaller less controllable burners. The unit is configured with a separate burner and removable pot / pan support which eases cleaning. The pan support readily accommodates the very heavy Japanese style flat cooking pan provided as part of the kit. The latter has a small lip around the edge to prevent liquids from running over, but would not take much to overrun. I cooked some flat bread using a small amount of oil without any trouble or mess. The heavy duty weight of the cook surface did a wonderful job creating a uniform cooking temperature. Likewise, my own go-to cast iron skillet was also very well supported and worked great. I was able to fry some Canadian style bacon (ok, more like American ham) and then pan scrambled some eggs. The end result was an egg-bacon flat bread wrap to which of course generous amounts of hot sauce was added. My experience is that everything always tastes better in the outdoors despite what the pics may show ;-). My test run was on a fairly breezy day. Consequently, I found that the cooking surfaces maintained a more uniform temperature when I blocked some of the direct wind. I was careful to keep the wind screen at a safe distance to ensure heat was not reflected back to the burner or fuel canister. I also set it up on a noncombustible ground surface. Lastly, I am obligated to mention that this Teppanyaki burner kit was provided to me for free from the REI trailblazers sampling program in exchange for an honest review. I am blessed to have a chance to use such a very "High End" outdoor cooking set. It will provide years of use and my camping buddies will appreciate the step up in food quality (ie not burnt or raw in places ;-) In summary, I highly recommend this product if you're looking for a very premium outdoor base camp cooking setup or just want something that works extremely well with ease and no fuse.
Versatile work horse of a stove
Finally got around to using this stove. First off I love the fact that the stove uses isobutane fuel and has a built in igniter. As someone who goes backpacking frequently I like the idea of using the same fuel type for backpacking and camping. I used my carbon steel pan to make some vegan burgers and I could not be more pleased. Stove burns hot but heat distribution is even, burgers cooked evenly and right through. The other positive about this stove is it comes apart for very easy cleaning. Stove also comes with an iron plate which will be useful for making about 4 burgers at a time without bringing my big cast iron pan or skipping bringing a pan altogether. The fact that there isn't a foldable top is a huge plus because you will not be restricted on what size pot or pan you can use, there is a minimum and a maximum size that's recommended by manufacturer but like I said not having any physical restrictions is great. The only thing I feel that can be improved with this pan is some sort of solid plastic storage case. With everything mentioned this will definitely be my go to camping stove from now on.
A fun little burner that sears beautifully
I really enjoy using this burner. I will preface this saying that I didn't use the standard fuel canister. Instead I used an adapter to connect to a 5lb refillable propane tank that I use for camping. I did have trouble igniting the burner using the built in switch, but I will chalk that up to me either using a different fuel or to me not actually looking at the directions because the ones that came with my burner are all in Japanese. (If only we had a method of finding information that was always at our fingertips....whoops) Once lit, this burner gets hot *fast*. I found that there is a bit of a learning curve to fine tuning the temperature, and accidentally got the plate up to smoking before backing off the heat. With a nice large surface that the plate provides I decided that I absolutely had to try out cooking a ribeye steak on it. With that heat learning curve I talked about I can say that I successfully seared the steak. As I learned though, I managed to keep the steak to a beautiful medium rare. Cleanup was very simple. I used the same method that I use on my cast iron skillets: a stiff brush and hot water. After a quick scrub everything was off the plate and once dried everything went back in the handy storage bags that came with the burner and it is ready for my next meal.
Fun Versatile Cooking Unit
I received this product for free from the REI trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. This grill is very versatile, I used it on most days when near my base camp. I used it for heating up water, making ramen, veggies, grilled meat, and eggs. It is a little heavy, but so is a cast iron skillet. I would recommend bringing this grill instead of a skillet and stove. It is small and comes with stuff sacks for storing. The Biggest drawback is it doesn’t have wind protection like a stove provides. I would highly recommend this grill.
More than you think!
Snow Peak's Teppanyaki Burner makes car camping 5x more fun, especially for the casual chef. With a market saturated with various burner options to choose from, it's understandable that we might not choose the right one right away. Snow Peak makes it an easy choice, and I'm going to do my best to make that choice easier for you too. 1. Powerful - The burner kit comes with an iron plate, and it is SOLID. I make a point to say this burner is ideal for car camping/backyard fun/the local food market cook; reason being, it's a really heavy plate. While it's not bulky, I wouldn't want to haul it around all day in a pack- it's not meant for that, though feel free to do so, it's thin enough to slip into a bladder pouch. However, it's so robust that once you've got that flame going, it'll stay evenly hot across the entire plate no matter the size of your flame. I had zero problems throwing on a half pound of shrimp, vegetables, and noodles and getting it to cook within 8 minutes or so. I also played with the versatility and used it as an iron skillet for a grilled cheese sandwich with some fig jelly (try it if you haven't). I cooked it with some butter in no time at all. Versatile - Nothing is stopping you from popping on a pot to boil water or a pan to scramble some eggs. The burner can comfortably accomodate 7" to 10.5" (~17.5cm to ~26.5cm) pots/pans if you're not using the included iron plate. The burner support arms are welded to the drip plate and definitely won't budge with a heavy pot/pan on top. Sleek - Snow Peak does it again with the quality of this product. They never fail to impress and I'm reminded of why I love their work. The drip plate works perfectly in catching spills - small or large; and it's so sturdy you won't feel the need to question its integrity. The burner also includes an arm that fixes the chosen iso butane at a set distance to work well with the very flexible fuel line. The fuel line itself includes the flame adjustment knob and starter/sparker and is super ergonomic, be it left or right hand in function. Whether you're the novice cook or the seasoned chef, I think you'll find something to really enjoy about this stove. 5/5 stars
