Great jacket for growing kids

The Ranier Rain jacket is great for growing children. The material is light, and wind and rain proof, and has enough room for layering underneath. My son is 7 years old and 4'2", and the medium is big for him. However, the velcro cuffs help to keep the sleeve length manageable. The reflective strips also help to keep him visible when it starts to get dark. The collar is lined with a fleece-like material that keeps my son comfortable, and the hood has a velcro strip to keep the hood out of his face. Unfortunately, it is still large for his head. I appreciate the length, however the bottom hem does not cinch, allowing wind to run under the jacket. The durability of the lighter material does worry me, however, as children are very active and I'm afraid it may be prone to catch on branches and easily rip.

We’ve found that this jacket doesn’t keep much rain out. Even a few minutes out in moderate rain leads to a jacket that’s soaked through and a wet kid. It’s good for a light drizzle, but has not held up against “rain”.

Nice Lightweight Rain Jacket For Kids

We really like the Rainier Rain Jacket. We got this Jacket before a cold, windy, and rainy weekend at Enchanted Rock state natural area in Texas. the jacket held up well to the rain and kept our daughter dry. It is also a nice wind shell. She used this as an outer layer with a fleece underneath. I recommend getting a size up for layering.

Basic rain jacket with some perks.

So my 6 year old son received this jacket. His last jacket was more a costume than a functional rain jacket. He loves the glow stripes on the back and the sleeves. The visor on the hood is a plus too.

Nice Lightweight Jacket

Lightweight, practical, nice style, and helps to stay warm and shield against wind and moisture. The only criticism is that it is a little tight at the front of the neck if the jacket is fully zipped up (it has a zipper and Velcro, which is a good feature). But, overall, it's a great jacket for cooler, windy, or wet weather.

Nice lightweight raincoat for kids

Nice lightweight rain coat that seems durable, movable, and thin enough to wear in the rain and light and small enough to bundle up when the rain stops and the sun peaks out. Adjustable cuffs makes the jacket move with you when climbing around and having your hand over your head.

Lightweight rain jacket that my son will wear!

This is a great lightweight rain jacket which is perfect for drizzle or hard rain (it won in both!). We purchased a size larger so my son could put it over a fleece or heavy sweatshirt and still be comfortable. Love the soft material around the neck but my favorite feature is that the hood actually stays in place thanks to the extra cinching/elastic. Very thoughtful and will definitely be buying this one again!

Waterproofing stopped working quickly

We got this jacket a little over a year ago, in 2024. My daughter brought it on 2 trips, and didn't use it much in between. After a 3rd trip in June with some rain, she said that the jacket isn't really waterproof. We asked somebody in REI about it, and they gave us a set of Nikwax Tech Wash and TX Direct Wash-In Waterproofing (they actually were kind of mocking us for not knowing the regular waterproofing needed, but that's another story.) I'll include a photo of the tag. We had followed the wash directions on the tag, which are Wash Cold with no fabric softener (which we don't use in general). The jacket had probably been washed about once (after a trip) - she hadn't worn it much. I followed the Tech Wash instructions, and then the Wash-in waterproofer, but it didn't fix the problem. I looked online and found that drying it at medium heat can help, so I did another treatment of the wash-in waterproofing, and dried it on medium for 20 minutes - still didn't help. Looking online, what's still happening is the jacket is "wetting out". It might still be waterproof in the inside layer, but the outside layer gets soaked and heavy, and the inside doesn't breathe and might get sticky. I also treated 3 other items at the same time (in 2 washes per instructions): a Lands End similar kids jacket, REI coop rain pants and Marmot rain pants. Water isn't soaking into any of them like this Rainier jacket (not positive about the REI pants - they aren't beading as much as the others, but aren't clearly soaked. I'll attach photos: I just quickly splashed the items under water for a few seconds and laid them on the floor (I've checked the other items 15 minutes later and they are still beading up). The bright purple/blue one is the Rainier jacket. Why don't they include re-waterproofing instructions on the product tag? And the re-waterproofing does not work at all for this product. I called REI and they won't do anything about it because it's past the 1 year warranty. After a lot of discussiong they agreed to give me a $20 gift certificate. I wouldn't buy anything that's supposed to be waterproof from REI Coop. I'll have to buy another jacket for an upcoming trip, which is Ouward Bound so requires true waterproofing.

Rainier Rain Jacket in Georgia

The Rainier Rain Jacket has proven to be perfect for my son. Living in the metro Atlanta Georgia area with unpredictable weather, this jacket's waterproofing kept him completely dry during a heavy downpour at the bus stop recently. Its sleek design, durability, and adjustable features make it both stylish and practical. I appreciate the reflective stripe and logo for safety. He likes it so much that it is now his daily jacket. Highly recommended for anyone seeking reliable protection against the elements and with a nice look!
