These poles are such a breeze to use and pack down so small! I love how light they; so easy to carry in a pack when you're not using them. The grips are super comfortable and the tips are well-built and very durable. I've mostly used these for hiking so far and they've handled great in all kinds of terrain. Couldn't recommend these enough! 10/10.
Straight out of the mesh carrying bag, these REI Co-op Swiftland Folding TT Carbon Trekking poles are fantastic! Good looking poles with matte black finish and gold accent elements. They are fashioned with comfortable dense foam hand grips and fabic quick release wrist strap for extra security. Assembly was a breeze to unfold, snap together and locked well in place. There will be no surprises when your hiking down rough trails. The lightweight carbon material makes packing, flying and traveling carefree and simple. Easy to fit in any backpack or hang from carabiner. The poles come with rubber and metal tips so you can change off on different trails. Also a set of dirt-snow-mud baskets are included. A winner winner for anyone who is looking for versatile Trekking poles. They also come in several different sizes for almost everyone needs.
Folding hiking poles specific for my height are amazing! I love that they are always ready to go, easy to use, and don't have to be adjusted. These easily fit in my car and backpack, too. They have completely replaced my earlier poles.
Took me a second to figure out how to snap the poles to a solid form but once I figured it out, I found it easier than the poles I've used in the past. They have a pull cord so they align and connect the sections together automatically. Points were firm so not recommended for indoor use, but amazing in firm terrain. I'd highly recommend these over older style tent pole style snap poles or 'adjustable' style that tend to adjust themselves over extended periods of use. Wasn't a big fan of trekking poles in the past but they are really handy to have and light enough to carry around for those times that you do need them due to steep or slippery terrain.
Wanted lighter poles for an Ultra with a lot of steep, rocky, technical ups and downs knowing they would be in my hands almost the entire way on this course. These did not disappoint! Light as a feather and they took the pounding. Barely new I was even holding them when not using. Half the price of the Leki poles I was looking at and a few ounces lighter. My other two sets of poles are also REI poles but they are variable length poles and messing with the lock-outs is a pain. Used those to know the right set length poles to get. Those will get moved to hiking and practice poles. These will be my go to poles for Ultras. Bonus - they folded up to fit nicely in my Solomon quiver, although they weren't in it much!
About the third or fourth time I unfolded these poles, one of the buttons that is supposed to securely lock them in place failed. Yikes! Glad it happened at home and not on the trail, but very concerned about the quality. They are going back tomorrow.
These poles are so lightweight and portable!! I used these on a 4-day backpacking trip - they fit easily into my pack, which I checked through the airport. They barely added any weight to it. I was so surprised by how lightweight they were that I expected them to break easily, but they held up great for four days of continuous use. I ended up lending one out for particularly steep sections of the trail, where someone wanted a bit of extra support and was jealous of my poles. We also passed them around for water crossings, and my whole group was pretty impressed with them. My biggest issue with these is that even though I thought I adjusted my previous poles to almost exactly 115 cm, these poles (at exactly 115 cm) are a bit taller than I'd like. So I guess I probably like mine at... I dunno, 112 cm or so. And with adjustable poles I often like to adjust the height of my poles depending on whether I'm going uphill or downhill, which I obviously can't do with these. Because these poles are so lightweight and compact, they'll be my go-to poles any time I'm flying to a hiking destination, and probably for anything longer than a weekend hike. I will probably continue to use my adjustable set of poles for day hikes and short backpacking trips.
I posted a review of this pole after purchasing a pair that turned out to have a defective locking mechanism (titled “watch out for defective poles!”). Yesterday I returned the poles to REI. I illustrated with the second pole how the locking mechanism (a silver button) is supposed to pop out to lock them and as I was doing that, the locking mechanism failed. I was given a replacement set, and I asked the REI staffer ringing up the exchange to open and close the poles a couple of times for me, as they seemed quite stiff and difficult to set up and collapse and I wanted to make sure they were working correctly. The locking mechanism on both the new poles failed, right there at the checkout desk. So, that’s 4 out of 4 poles where the locking mechanism broke even before I got them out on the trail. Going to look for some other brand. Surprised at the lack of quality control in this REI-branded product. Both sets were size 105 and purchased at Silverdale store.
These are the lightest trekking poles I have ever used. I really like how they collapse and extend easily so I can stow them when not needed and pull out quickly on the steep declines. They saved me a few times from slipping today on my muddy hike.
I’m a full-time hiking guide based in Utah canyon country. I also guide in the mountains of western Europe. I was among the first in the U.S. to use trekking poles regularly. I've used many models of trekking poles from all the leading manufacturers. Many have been good, none has been ideal. But the Swiftland TT’s have all of what I consider to be the optimal attributes for a trekking pole: (1) Very light, with a quick, fast swing-weight. (2) Sculpted, ergonomic grips that are large enough to be comfortable in an average man’s hand, and are soft enough for all-day comfort. (3) Straps of sufficiently-thick material (though still very light) that they won’t bunch up and cut into your hands and are quick/easy to get in and out of. (4) Secure assembly: no rattles between pole sections when in use. (5) Long-lasting carbide tips. (6) Very small, light, minimalist integral baskets. (7) Reasonable price compared to other carbon-fiber poles currently available. If the Swiftland TT’s prove to be as robust and long-lasting as they so far promise to be, I’ll be using them every day for years. Bravo REI ! And thank you. Please keep making these exceptional trekking poles.
