Practical, versatile camping light

The Orbiter 450 Lantern is lightweight, easy to use, and the battery life is excellent. The blue and red filters are good for creating a mood in your tent or around the campground picnic table. I have used the lantern primarily for reading outdoors at night, which it is great for. The light is bright. There are three light-dispersion modes--one which spreads the light around the sides, one which shines the light downwards, from the bottom of the lantern, and one which does both. Shining the light downwards was useful for playing cards inside the tent.

Lightweight, perfect for short backpacking trip

This light is a lightweight, no-frills entry into the camping light market. Yes, it does have a few different settings to produce a blue colored hue, a "candle" effect, a "flashlight" at the bottom, and a transition between a few colors if you're into that sort of thing, but essentially it's just a basic light. As someone who typically backpacks, I use a headlamp 99.9% of the time, but having some extra light at camp is nice when you're not adding much weight to your gear. The light is bright, and although I haven't used this car camping yet, this would be the perfect lantern to pack if you're cooking or playing games, basically any gathering where some bright, but not overpowering, light would be welcomed. I actually just used this around my house with recent winter storms knocking out power, the battery life was impressive as it lasted a little over 4 hours on the brightest setting before running out of juice. Technically, this is marketed as a charging source, but to be honest there is not much value in that since it is only packing a 2,000 mAh battery and that was good for charging a smartphone ~80% before depleting the entire battery from a full charge. Sure, this is a cool feature that you could use in a pinch if absolutely necessary or in an emergency situation in the back country, but most likely you (should) have other means in that scenario and this is merely a marketing gimmick. The bottom line is that this is a very nicely built lantern - perfect for car camping or a 1-2 day overnight where you have a bit of space in your pack for a lantern without sacrificing too many ounces.

Great light for camping or short backpacking trip

The Black Diamond Orbiter 450 is small and lightweight enough to easily go on a short backpacking or car camping trip as a utility light, faux campfire light or mood lighting with it's multi color modes. It's also USB re-chargeable and can be used as a charger for your other USB devices. My outdoor activity of choice is backpacking and hammock camping and my primary light sources are typically my headlamp, mobile phone and a campfire. The Black Diamond Orbiter 450 was a nice addition and cast a surprising amount of light around my campsite. With the open rings at the top, I was able to easily attach it to my hammock ridgeline and even on the lowest setting I was able to get plenty of light under my tarp. Likes - Very easy to see the charge status of the battery - All of the buttons and USB ports seem well protected from moisture and debris. - USB-C charging made it easy to charge with my existing USB battery pack. - In a pinch, I can use the lantern to charge other USB chargeable devices. - There is a wide range of light between the dimmest and brightest settings. - The open rings on top made it easy to connect to a hammock ridgeline or closed loop without the need for a carabiner. - It feels solid. Not heavy, but it feels well constructed enough that I didn't worry when I bumped it or it fell off of whatever it was sitting on. - Surprisingly stable on uneven surfaces. Dislikes - It wasn't immediately intuitive for me and the manual took a minute to interpret. For example, the lantern shipped "locked" and wouldn't power on but it took a minute to figure out how to unlock it. - The battery is a 2000mAh battery, which is fine for just a light but seems low when many modern smartphones have 3000mAh, 4000mAh or larger batteries and would likely be what campers are trying to charge with this.

Tough and Bright

This is a super cool little light. It’s rechargeable with USB, which is convenient. It’s very bright, but can also have just a small amount of light underneath so it’s not blinding. We used it when we were out hiking this weekend when it got dark. It’s tough and durable so we were able to toss it in a backpack and pull it out when we needed it. My 3 year old loves the color changing light feature. Other than entertaining him, I’m not sure what I’d use that feature for, but it is cool. We will absolutely be adding this to our camping gear must-haves.

Solid camping lantern

Solid camping lantern. The numerous settings are nice to have- a couple bright light settings, blue light, flickering campfire, and color-changing rainbow. The lantern is lightweight enough to be hung from the top of a tent. The usage as a battery is great as well. On a full charge, the lantern charged my phone from 45% to 90% in about an hour and fifteen minutes, then with the remaining battery it was able to run on the brightest setting for over two and a half hours. The lantern belongs to my 3-year-old now, as she enjoys watching it on the color-changing setting.

A Surprisingly Versatile Light!

This lantern turned out to be a lot more useful than I expected. It's much bulkier of a lantern than I would typically use, but it definitely has its place. For me, that place is car camping (or very short distance over night trips). To start, the lantern is pretty large. I wouldn't use it for longer trips where I would have to carry it. It's far too heavy and large for my ultralight kits. However, to my surprise, I really loved it. There are many different customizable light settings. Different colors, a candle light setting (looks great on a table at night), and both a top and bottom white light. All lights dim to your level of choice and the controls are intuitive. The bottom light is particularly helpful for walking around the campsite as it illuminates the ground quite well while the top light illuminates the surroundings. The hooks on top work well for carrying, as well as for hanging in a tent. You don't need any there attachments (i.e carabiner) for the loop on the tent ceiling. I thought this was a well thought out design. As for the dislikes... I don't particularly like the aesthetic of the lantern. It looks a bit more like it belongs in a child's room than in the outdoors. I also don't love that they advertise this as a charger. That's not realistic on a 2000mah battery. I suppose in a pinch if you need a partial charge you can make that happen, but don't expect the light to work in any real capacity afterwards. I will definitely add this light to my car camping arsenal. For anything else, I'll sacrifice some functionality for weight and space savings.

Versatile, fun, camp light

Probably 4.5 stars - only criticism is the connector is not mini USB so not compatible with a lot of the other portable electronic devices that I own. It does come with it's own connector (and I'm sure it's another "standard" size) - I just don't have any other devices that work on that size. The light has many neat features and maybe another slight criticism is that they are so abundant that it takes a little while to figure out the operation (do you mean I should read the instructions?). The instructions are good, but like with a lot of stuff, mostly good at reminding you how things work once you figure them out for yourself. From a practical standpoint it has a lot of good features as a lantern. The downward light feature is most "flashlight" like - so very handy. The multiple power settings - handy too - let's me set the light to work best for the time and situation. The colors are fun - even if they aren't a "practical" feature. You've got to have fun camping too. The mounted feet are nice and the rubber used has a sticky feel - i.e. the light is not going to slide off of things. I haven't tried the light as a charger - but the power that it stores tells me it should work fairly well. We camp in an Aliner popup and I think this light is great for that kind of camping or any car camping.

Small But Respectable

When I first got the Black Diamond Orbitor 450 I was hestitant it would perform has advertised. I didn't think its small size (4"x5.5") and lightweight (9.5 oz.) could handle cold and windy winter camping or being jostled and knocked aroynd in a car. I didn't think the 450 lumens would be bright enough on the table at night. I was pleasantly surprised to be wrong on all accounts. The orbitor has three rubber legs that ensures it doesn't tip over, even in windy conditions. It's stable and sturdy. We placed it on a box on the table and had no issues playing games late into the night. Headlamps weren't required. 450 Lumens was plenty. I'm old school and have no use for the three colors, but they are nice. The dimming function worked well as did the downward light. I appreciated the raised feel of the buttons, it was easy to turn on and off in the dark. The charge indicator has three bright lights thst are easy to read. The two usb ports are well protected by the rubber feet and although dew collected on the lantern at night we didn't have any problem using the ports the next day. The lock feature is always a plus, I hate storing a lantern then find out I left it on. The direction sheet is easy to follow. It's in multiple languages or you can look at the pictures. It doesn't take more than two hours to get the lantern fully charged, very fast. You can charge a cell phone, however I wouldn't want to fully charge a phone as it takes too long and drains the lantern. I intend to use the orbitor as a partner to the big propane lantern for car camping.
