Handy day-to-day gripper boot
These boots seem like very handy for the icy winters we often have now. Easy on/off with the zipper on the inner side, low cut but high enough to keep out snow on the sidewalks, and the grippers are super handy. They seem to run a bit big - I got my usual size 10 and they feel like they flop around, but I added a second insole and now they're good - that was also helpful since they don't have too much arch support. They feel warm and fairly cozy. They're going to be super handy for just out-and-about life like errands and for my work where I visit people around town with a wide range of snow shoveling habits! I wouldn't wear them for hiking, but for in town they're perfect for slippery icy conditions. The only downside is having the permanent cleats, there are some stores and other places that don't want you to wear the cleats inside (and you wouldn't always want to - they can be slippery on some floors), so you'd either have to take them off or have some way to cover them up.
Watch out slippery ground!
These boots are made for walking. Walking on slippery ground, that is. The small "spikes" on the sole replace the need for portable ice grips for your footwear. They are well made- sustainable, warm, fit true to size, and are comfortable. They did fit with my snowshoes, however the lack of laces prevents the custom, tighter fit I prefer for snowshoeing and the low profile will let in snow. They are stylish and did seem to fit with leggings, jeans, and sweats. Note that the spikes make walking on hard ground noisy and if worn indoors have the potential to snag rugs and scratch soft floors!
Very comfortable and warm, but be careful
These boots are great for hiking outside in the snow. They are comfortable and kept my feet warm with just a thin sock. However I warn that the little knobby grips on the bottom are extremely slippery when you are not in the snow. I can’t attest for the ice as there wasn’t ice at the moment where I was, but I was walking through my hotel lobby with them on for my hike and I almost fell 4 times. I tried them again at home as I was curious if my wood floors would be different but they were just as slippery. You need to be extremely careful when not walking on snow so you don’t fall break your neck.
What an excellent boot!
My first time using these was to walk the dogs after a heavy snow that left all the local walking paths covered in packed ice. They were AMAZING! The built-in metal studs made it so I didn't slip once, and even when I tried to slide (for fun), the shoe stopped me. They're also very warm and comfortable, like feet blankets. I recommended them to my neighbor who was sliding around walking her dog. One thing to note is the metal studs are, well, metal...so choose your terrain wisely. If you're walking on clear pavement, you'll be clicking around town (kind of like how you can hear winter tires rolling down the street when there is no snow on the ground). And definitely don't plan to wear them indoors. What an excellent boot!
Good for winter bike commuting
I plan to wear these bike commuting in the winter, where I live the trails and roads are snowy and icy Nov-March. The size chart is accurate, and I can wear thick socks / toe warmers with them. The spikes will make me feel more safe and secure when getting on and off the bike. I can't wait for winter to wear them!
IceBug-er-ific!
These boots are very comfortable and have plenty of room for a heavier sock. However, you may not need heavy socks with the fleece lining. I would consider them true to size - the extra room is more on the top of your foot, not the length of the boot. The carbide studs on the sole are small so you don't really feel them walking around and I like that they are placed where you would need them most for traction. The overall look of the boot is not super stylish, but they really don't look bad with skinny jeans or regular jeans for that matter. I'm more concerned about staying upright on the ice, so a little lack of style is fine by me. You can tell the soles are made from recycled material because there are flecks of different colors. They are also very light weight for a winter boot, which surprised me in a good way. Some boots are so clunky and heavy, but these feel like tennis shoes. If you're on the fence, give them a shot, I think you just may like them! I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review.
Excited to use these this winter! Let it snow!
“I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review.” I am excited to use these Icebug boots this winter. It being September as I write, I will have to wait a month or more for some snow or maybe an ice storm. With their beefy lugs and spikes, these boots will be ideal in icy conditions on roads or trails. My husband uses Icebugs trail runners with the spikes and won't run without them; he was pretty jealous of my new winter boots. They are very comfortable with plenty of toe room. I found the heel to be a bit slippy, so will need a thick sock or a heel cup to keep my heel in place and avoid friction. I might try a different insole as well. These are my normal size, 9.5 and fit well other than the large heel area, with plenty of room for a warm sock. They feel warm, but I'll be testing them at well below zero this winter to find out just how warm. They're very nice looking boots as well, not too bulky in appearance. Okay winter, bring it on!
Great boot
Great boot. I love the color but too big. I wear a 5 and I thought the 6 would fit but does not.
Looks grippy, lots of room
I live in Wisconsin, so got these thinking they'd be great for icy commutes/dog walks etc. I haven't tested them on ice (will leave a future review), but the soles seem like they'll do the job. I'm a pretty standard 9.5, and the boot has plenty of room for large socks, which is appreciated. My pair are all black, and look alright, but nothing to write home about in the 'cool' department. But it's winter and that's the least of my worries.
