Solid Workhorse of a Shoe
Received free product
As someone who is generally a fan of sticking to trail runners as my go-to shoe of choice, I was pleasantly surprised by the comfort & versatility of the Oboz Sypes shoe. True to size, traction is solid, no overheating of feet on the hottest of days, and soreness be gone at the end of a long day. The technology of the soles is pretty neat (& sustainable!) to boot- read the insert that comes with the shoes....

10 mile hike and they look a mess.
I was so excited to try these- they fit great, they were comfortable and had nice, rugged soles. I only have had these for 2 months. I do weekly short hikes of 3-4 miles where they felt okay but got progressively dirtier. Then, I did one 10 mile overnight hike with a 20# pack, and they just did not hold up. I can say that the soles still look brand new. The uppers are a mess though. They are now lax and look awful. The toes are completely ripped up. I am one of those people who still has shoes from 10 years ago that look fine, but these will not be in that category. I'm so disappointed.

Great urban woodland hikers

Took my new pair out for a 5.5 mile hike to break them in. Didn’t put my orthotics in cuz I saw some reviews that said these shoes have good support. Results great grip on muddy, gravel and dirt trail. Comfortable on asphalt trail. Walk through wet grass and of course they resisted the water. Feet aren’t tired or hot (70- degree Seattle day) wearing thick smartwool hiker socks. The look - in thyme- is smart casual in a PNW or AK sort of way which I like. These are replacing my 4-year old sawtooth Sapir and I’m thinking I may need a second pair of these…

Great hiking shoes

I bought these hiking shoes for my trip to Costa Rica. I was able to make my way around the dirt, rocks, mud and other obstacles on the trails without any problems. It’s a comfortable shoe with great grip that made my trip enjoyable.

Extremely comfortable but tear up easily

These are the most comfortable hikers I have found. I can wear them all day long and did not have to purchase a support orthotic. But having only taken them twice on a dirt county road and mostly around town found that the toe tore up easily. What a shame. I would give it a 5 for comfort.

Sturdy low hiker with great support

This hiking shoe was a great find. I took several walks around town and on local trails to get a feel for them. Then they went for two days of hiking 8-10 miles each day in the bluffs on a variety of trail surfaces. They maintained comfort with no hot spots, they were supportive and sturdy, and they had good traction on rock. I didn't even need my orthotics--a huge statement for me. I have low, rolled-in arches and my feet emerged perfect! A few rocks and roots tried to roll my ankles and for a low hiker they actually helped recover the roll. I have yet to test the waterproofing beyond light rain and heavy dew, but so far I'm glad I took a gamble on these.

Solid on trails and wet fields with my dog!

The Oboz low hiking shoe has a great fit - no break-in time for me. I can lace the shoe according to the sock weight I am wearing. Feels as if my foot and the shoe are one so I have solid grip on slippery surfaces. I forget I have shoes on they are so comfortable for my feet. Waterproof and leather, too! I purchased the slate with red laces which seems to go with whatever colors I am wearing. I can wear it with jeans running around town without the look of a thick tread like a lot of hikers which means I am wearing these shoes a lot. Check out the Oboz video and see the sole of the boot, very cool.

Too narrow for hiking

This is a nice looking shoe that is probably better suited for light walking or casual dress. The arch support is fantastic, but overall, it's a very contoured fit with little room in the toe box. I ordered a full size up for hiking, but after just ten minutes walking in my living room, my toes were already sore from being squished. I don't have particularly wide feet, but even so, there's just enough room to allow for swelling and natural movement. The material also did not feel sturdy enough to hold up on the trail. Straight out of the box, the shoes already appeared scuffed. I'm disappointed to have to return these because the arch support is great. I hope Oboz will consider a wider option.

Happy Trails

Bought the shoes a year ago and absolutely love them. I've walked pavement and snow throughout a Milwaukee winter, as well has dry and muddy trails in the Wisconsin state parks. They served me very well while hiking Joshua Tree National Park and the Kelso Dunes in Mojave National Preserve. I have found them to be excellent hiking shoes on all terrain. Also, they truly have proven themselves to be waterproof. I have found that Oboz, do fit true to size. I do however, size up half a size with hiking shoes. I learned the hard way (loosing a toenail) that this allows for swelling.

Black toenails after breaking in

I bought these when my favorite model of hiking shoe was discontinued. Love the security these shoes offer on loose gravel down-hills. Love the look of the shoe, don’t really mind the leather retexturing from abrasions. Unfortunately, as soon these fully broke in, it was not possible to even garden in them, much less hike, without blood blisters forming under toenails. I’ve not had this happen in 25 years of hiking. Of course, REI wont take them back at that point so I’m pretty bummed and not sure I can stretch my budget to try another brand this season.
