Really great, versatile running shorts.
These are great shorts! They are very light and ventilate well. I've used them hiking in the hills, jogging along the road, and riding about town. They're also the first unlined running shorts I've used in many years and their comfort in every setting is likely tied to the fact that I can match my base layer to the activity. There's only one smallish pocket along the back waistband. I can fit my car keys and maybe a tiny energy bar into it, but no more. My iPhone doesn't fit and I need to carry it another way. That isn't a dealbreaker because the constraint reminds me to unplug when I'm out. That's a good thing, right? Overall, I'm very impressed with the shorts and will reach for them often as the weather warms and the outdoors beckon.
Not recommended
I actually have 2 pair of the same shorts (bought at the same time) and had these for less than a year and wore them maybe once or twice a week and the cuffing at the legs are undone with the adhesive and frailing of the fabric exposed. Would not recommend these especially for the price you pay.
Hello there, thank you for your honest review of the Norvan Short 5". We understand how disappointing it is to experience wear at the cuffs after limited use, especially on both pairs. To ensure this gets properly looked into, we recommend submitting a Product Service Form so our team can assess the issue and assist with next steps. We truly appreciate your feedback and the opportunity to support you. https://arcteryx.com/ca/en/help/product-service/service-request
Love the shorts and fabric... runs a bit small
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I've had these shorts for a couple of weeks now and have worn them while exercising indoors and out (e.g., hiking, rowing, strength training, biking) and just walking around the neighborhood. My favorite thing about these shorts is the fabric. It's light, breathable, doesn't retain moisture. It's like they're not even there. I will definitely buy more Arc'teryx products made from this material. I generally like the cut, but it seems to run small. I have several other Arc'teryx products and typically wear a medium. These shorts (also a medium) felt a bit snug around the waist and could have used a bit more room in the crotch. I thought about trading-up for a large but did not. After wearing, the waistband was somewhat misshapen -- but this was resolved through washing. Despite being a bit smaller than I would have preferred, the shorts did not feel restrictive. For my purposes, the rear pocket was adequate and could easily fit an ID, credit card, and/or cash. I did not need to (and wouldn't be able to) fit a phone in the pocket.
Light, comfy, but the pocket is too small.
I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. Let me start by saying that I am not a runner, so I cannot say how these shorts would work for someone who specifically buys shorts dedicated specifically to running. I CAN say, however, that they are very light, very comfortable, nice to wear outdoors, too short for rock climbing with a harness, and completely inadequate for me in the pocket department. Sure, when you run, you want something light, that will shed moisture, that moves with you, and is basically unnoticeable. These shorts tick all of those boxes. They are a little short for my tastes, and although I was completely covered while rock climbing indoors with a harness, I felt a little over-exposed. They fit just fine on a trail hike, so I would say how you feel about the length depends on your activity. The pocket is my only bone to pick with these things. No side pockets. Just one pretty small, zippered pocket in the back. It CANNOT fit an iPhone 12 inside. It cannot fit a standard bifold wallet inside. I suppose it could fit keys, or an energy gel packet (as claimed in the product literature). But I found myself being constantly annoyed that I had to carry other things by hand when using these. Maybe not a problem if you’re running and only being an ID. I understand that the size probably helps prevent items from bouncing uncomfortably while you run, but it just felt too small to be useful.
Great lightweight trail running shorts
These are very lightweight shorts great for trail running. The back pocket is a little small for modern cell phones, but works fine for carrying keys, cards, etc. They are very comfortable and stretchy as well.
Choice Matters
These shorts are exceptionally comfortable, they are unlined and it is about time manufacturers start giving men a choice in what they wear or not under their shorts whether they be for running, walking, swimming or any other activity. Arc'teryx is one of the first to do this and has several different styles to choose from.
Sick pants, could use some more room
Material and quality are great but the crotch area has very little room. Basically its not very discrete down there however this could be a result of my larger thighs which fills up the pants in ways it wasn't meant to. I understand this is a running short and not designed for body builders but I still think the design could be improved to suit a wider range of body types. Still love the shorts and will wear them anyway. Also note before buying that there are no pockets except a little pouch on the back of your waist!
Everything but the sizing 100%
Want to love them. I have bought the medium and returned and bought the small. Year later bought the medium. Small is too small, medium is too big. According to the numerical sizing chart I am a size 31 which equates to 83cm waist (which is what I am exactly), and a 98cm hip, (which I am also exactly), these only come in the alpha sizing in which a size S equates to a 81cm waist and 95cm hip and a size M equates to an 86cm waist and a 100cm. So S is 2cm too small, and M is 3cm too large. Now I am a fit guy ,10% body fat, very active in the gym, ski patrol, etc.. and theres nothing I can do about my hip size, cant gain or lose muscle to fit. Kind frustrating to find sizing. Do a size revision (for all bottoms for that matter) and you got 5 starts a customer for life for bottoms.
Hello Juuls, we're sorry to hear that the Norvan Short 5"in size small and medium does not fit you, even after carefully looking at our sizing chart. Our design team is continuously assessing the fit/sizing of our gear to make it more streamline, and we will make sure to pass your review along to them. We appreciate the time you took to leave a review.
Inside of the shorts goes up my groin
I’m a long standing Arcteryx customer across various product types. I generally have nothing but praise for the quality of the products. When I run the inside of the shorts goes up my groin. This didn’t happen to same extent with last years model. I end up having to pull the shorts down, although this is only a temporary solution. This also happens when I wear the shorts with the Arcteryx boxers. Disappointing for an expensive pair of shorts. Size is medium and size is not the issue.
Hello Ginger, thank you for sharing your experience with the Norvan Short 5". We're sorry to hear about the issue with the shorts riding up while running, especially since it wasn’t a problem with last year's model. We'll pass this feedback along to our design team as we strive to improve.
Best Running Shorts
In a rush I purchased the shorts as my standard shorts have started to fall short. Bought three pairs and the boxers as well. So light, great fit, almost like they aren’t even there. Fit is right where I expected, which is always great when ordering online. The intention is for them to be trail shorts but no issues with rolling them on the road.
