We received this jacket from the REI Trailblazers program. My son really likes the fleece lining - it’s warm and comfortable. He also enjoyed the thumb holes to keep his sleeves in place. He’s worn this jacket a lot already this winter for skiing, sledding, tubing, playing in the snow, and during the occasional times I can get him to shovel the front steps! In all cases, he didn’t seem to overheat and never complained of the cold. On the ski chair lift it can get pretty windy and the jacket held up well. The hood worked great with his ski helmet. After a few weeks the snow in our yard was really muddy and dirty, requiring the jacket to get its first wash. It held up well in the washer and dryer - so no complaints there. The overall verdict: it’s versatile, warm, and works well across multiple sports and uses. The cons are the pockets: REI definitely failed this test as the zipper constantly gets stuck in the pocket liner. Also, they should have added arm pit vents - I think as he needs to wear the coat in the shoulder season he will need to vent the heat out when we are hiking and spring skiing. Finally, we couldn’t find a good pocket for the season ski pass - for skiing most mountains use an RFID pass and it’s convenient if there’s a pocket just for the ski pass.

My son really loved this jacket. Unfortunately we have now gone through two of these jackets because the zipper keeps getting off track and breaking. We were able to get a refund the first time so am hopeful we can get another and order a new type of jacket.

Comfy, Warm, and Practical

My eight year old daughter was delighted when she saw this jacket. Her first comment was, “I love it!” We love the high-visibility colors and reflective arm bands. This makes spotting her on the slopes easy. The integrated snow skirt and internal sleeve with thumb hole keep the snow out. The removable hood has a goggle holder and is the only removable piece. While some may prefer a removable liner we like the fact that the liner is integrated into the shell. This makes the jacket less complex and easier to keep track of when we send it to school. Our daughter loves the inside pocket. While she is wearing a size medium in her other jackets, the small fits her perfectly. After wearing it for a couple of days, I asked her what she thought. She said, “It is comfy and cozy.” The jacket is well made and designed with kids in mind. Nicely done, REI!

Great but wish it had pit zips

I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. My daughter has been using this jacket for a while now in a variety of conditions, including wind and snow for day-to-day use and has taken it skiing. She really likes it, but it definitely has some flaws that make it more suited to be an everyday jacket rather than a ski jacket, although it’s certainly still good for skiing/snowboarding. Pros: - Jacket is warm and the inner liner is soft and cozy. - It breathes reasonably well while still being wind and waterproof. - There’s a double sleeve liner at the cuff to make it easy for kids to put their mittens on without creating that annoying gap between the mitten and the sleeve where snow can get in. - You can take the hood off. - There’s a reflective stripe, which is great for wearing around town. - There’s a loop on the front if you ski/snowboard someplace that still uses those barcode ski passes and you don’t want to attach it to your zipper. Cons: - The biggest is that there aren’t pit zips, and that alone is worth dinging a star. When skiing/snowboarding in particular this limits versatility, especially in warmer spring conditions. - There’s a lack of pockets. There are only two on the front, leaving out an interior pocket and an arm pocket for a lift pass. More and more resorts use the RFID passes even for a day pass and are phasing out the barcode tickets, so this one is puzzling. That said, the pockets it has are roomy - my daughter can fit an absurd amount of snacks in there. Overall, this is a fantastic, cozy jacket for a lot of people and as something that kids wear to school in colder climes you can’t go wrong. It just seems easy to me to include pit zips and a ski pass holder.

Lightweight, comfortable and warm.

I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. The jacket has clean lines with a soft and warm interior including the two zippered hand pockets. The inside right pocket doesn’t close, but has an angled elasticized pocket that is large enough to stash the hood when it’s removed if you want to keep it available to use. It would be nice if the other side had a pocket as well, but it has a spot to write the child’s name with other info instead. In the sleeve of each arm there is cuff with thumb hole that is very stretchy (my hand fits comfortably) that my kid put on then slid gloves over. Good feature for keeping snow out, but can easily avoid using when wearing for daily winter weather. She wore it in wet and cold conditions. She stayed comfortable and dry. She liked that the hood was detachable. She’s a bit cold natured and doesn’t often cover her head, but when she put the hood on, it was a good fit to protect her head and face while still offering good visibility (didn’t fall over her eyes). Took a tumble down a small rocky dirt hill. The jacket had no tears or fraying. There was a little dirt ground into the sleeve that cleaned off easily with a damp soapy washcloth. (See pics) My daughter is just under 5’ tall, 80-90lbs and generally wears a 0/1 Juniors or 12 Kids size. This jacket in a size 10 is a just right fit for her this year. She thought the Harvest Gold was okay as a color. We’d consider it gender neutral, but she would have preferred a different color. Two changes I’d like to see: (1) a second interior pocket, (2) option to roll the hood. Neither of those would be a game changer for me. This is a great lightweight jacket that she said kept her very warm. I’m hoping we get a good snow to take her skiing or for her to tumble in wearing this jacket.

A well designed and well made insulated jacket.

We went out to play on a very cold November day. The jacket was warm and allowed for movement. I liked the reflector bands for safety and they look good as part of the overall design. The snow cuffs with thumbhole are sewn to the lining. Snow and wind won't go up the sleeves. The removable hood is adjustable. I like that the hood snaps have their own sleeve. The chin guard will protect the neck from wind, but shouldn't rub or itch.

Great winter coat

My almost 9yo is loving this coat! With the weather getting colder and a trip to the mountains, this coat really keep him warm. We typically have used a 3-1 winter coat, but this one might have actually swayed me away. It’s the right amount of warmth while also allowing for layering underneath. The wrist gaiters are an awesome feature for the snow, reducing accidental snow up the sleeve! The hood also fits perfectly for rain, not being so deep that it could block vision, but also not to shallow that it’s raining on your face. And the double zipper is always a plus when you’re dealing with kids in the snow. Overall, super happy with quality of this coat and all the features!

REI thought of everything!

This kids jacket has it all! Thumbholes, reflective lines, removable hood, big zippers, deep pockets and a very soft lining! My 6 year loves this jacket (in size small) as it keeps him warm with lots of room to layer underneath. He says "it's like being hugged!" He loves the gold/yellow color is as it's vibrant and spotting him will be easy. We haven't tried it in the snow yet but we were able to take it to the cold desert of Palm springs and it was just just right with a shirt underneath.

Great quality, stylish jacket that has held up

Fantastic jacket. After spending several years In southern California, we moved back home to the Reno Tahoe area This summer. I wanted to make sure our five-year-old had a good experience in the snow, I remember being a kid and being wet and cold. we have taken this thing everywhere, The skill, sledding, to school in rain and snow. My daughter is always warm and dry, the wrist gaiters are a great touch and material seems waterproof and breathable.

Great for layering!

The jacket is phenomenally made. The hood is adjustable, the sleeves have Velcro as well to adjust to keep snow out, the lip of the zipper sits perfectly without digging into my 4 year old’s face/neck. It’s not going to be as warm as a down jacket. If you live anywhere above the MD line, you’re going to need a thicker coat. But we bought this for play in the snow and layered if with a down vest underneath and warm layers. It fits true to size, my 4 year old is a little under 4ft and about 38-40lbs, and the 4T is a perfect fit. Size up if you want extended wear!
