I primarily use this when lead belaying, and I’ve been using this consistently for the past four months now, both in the gym and outdoors. It functions similarly to a tube style device, while also having an inherent geometry that will help catch falls, even in a worst case scenario where something hits a belayer and they fall unconscious. I love how easy it is to feed and take in slack as needed, and the Mammut Smarter attachment helps provide me peace of mind that I won’t ever accidentally raise the brake hand too high (which is a concern for any belay device, including the GriGri; never let go of the brake end!)
This device works for my brain super well, the lowering system works super clean and makes for a reliable and smooth belay. Feeding slack is super simple on this device and I much prefer using this to lead belay over a Gri gri. On top of all of this, the assisted brake works super well and is easy to show to whatever climber I’m belaying making them feel super safe. Epic!
All the components of this kit are good quality. I've been in and around sport climbing for almost 20 years now and can see the value in this kit, especially when teaching someone the basics of belay. It's very difficult to accidentally leave the carabiner gate open due to the swing arm lock, and the orientation is the same. It's just obvious when it's not done correctly. Further, the belay device (and backup) make it difficult to allow a dangerously fast descent. It's very good in preventing panic in newbies. I also liked it when acting as belay for long periods of time as it helped stave off fatigue. My only minor gripe is the size. It's just big. If you're planning g on keeping this handy on your belt while playing around for the day on the wall, I'd suggest a smaller BRD, but for it's intended purpose, I'm not disappointed.
I've used this in the gym and at the crag and it has worked great so far. It takes a little to get used to giving slack but it easy as any other device once you are accustomed to it. The same goes for lowering. It's a bit grippy at first but it's smooth sailing once you get the hang of it. Considering the price point and it's features, I would highly recommend it.
Great and really easy to use belay device. Operates a little bit different from and ATC but you figure it out fast. Also really easy to deal out rope when lead climbing. I am not sure if the little safety tab actually does anything to make the device safer, but it does keep the rope from rubbing against itself which is nice
Love this belay device, very nice easy to use and safe. Only issue is when lowering the climber, slightly different technique required but easy to learn.
Lighter and more simple than the Grigri. Use it all the time for gym climbing. Give great peace of mind and is easy and intuitive to use.
