Best Sleep I've Ever Had in the Backcountry
I am a side sleeper with an old shoulder injury and some lower back pain and only have the means to invest in one really good pad. I spent several weeks researching sleeping pad specs, demoed a few pads at my local REI, and settled on this one for the reasons below. ___PROS___ (1) It is EXTREMELY comfortable! I have previously used accordion-fold foam pads and a very cheap backpacking air mattress from Amazon, and while other people seem to sleep just fine on those, I was always waking up with incredible pain and stiffness in my hips and shoulders. The quality of sleep I get on this pad is almost as good as sleeping in my bed at home, and no other pad I tried is more comfortable. (2) It insulates very well. I knew I wanted an R-value of at least 4 so I could use this pad year-round. I've only been using it for a few months now and haven't had the chance to put it through its paces in winter, but over this past weekend it dipped down to 46° F overnight and I found myself feeling perfectly warm coupled with a Teton Sports Leef Mummy Sleeping Bag with a survival/ comfort rating of about 0°/ 30°. Sleeping on it comfortably in summer just means dressing down to my underwear and using my sleeping bag more like a loose blanket. (3) It's impressively packable and lightweight for the measure of comfort, cushioning, and insulation it provides. (4) I really like the quilted top. I don't love the "slidey" feeling of most pads and on occasions where I've had to set up my tent on a very slight incline, the extra grip feels like it keeps me in place a bit better. (5) The one-way inflator valve with a rubber button to allow for micro deflation adjustments is really nice for dialing in your preferred firmness. I typically inflate this pad to its maximum, lay down on it, and then give the button a few quick presses so that it sinks just enough to "hold" my body more while still offering plenty of cushioning from the ground. All this said, I can see why it might not be the best choice for others. ___POTENTIAL CONS___ (1) It's not as light or compact as some other pads. I very strongly considered the Nemo Tensor Ultralight against the Big Agnes. It wasn't quite as comfortable as this pad but very close to it and for little more than half the weight. My biggest hang-up was the continually hit-or-miss reviews about its durability (even after purported improvements made to its design in the last year). Some people sing nothing but praise for the Tensor while others still have nightmarish stories about pinhole leaks and weeks-long replacement procedures. If I were a thru-hiker or an infirmed elder to whom every shaved ounce matters, I probably would have taken a chance there, but because I'm a weekend camper who wants premium comfort and doesn't mind carrying the extra 12 ounces for a few days, the Big Agnes felt like the clear winner. (2) It doesn't inflate as quickly as some smaller pads. The Big Agnes is thick and while the included inflation bag helps tremendously, you'll likely spend at least 5+ minutes getting it set up. That feels entirely negligible to me, but if you're a thru-hiker who is setting up and tearing down camp every night for weeks on end, I can see why those few extra minutes might matter to you. ___FINAL THOUGHTS___ I LOVE this pad! I am beyond impressed by its quality and it has completely transformed my capacity to enjoy sleeping in the woods. If you are prone to aches and pains, if you sleep on your side, or if you simply want to sleep as well as you possibly can while laying your head down among remote forests, streams, and ridgeline views, THIS is the pad you should buy—particularly since it has recently been discontinued and can be purchased at a discounted price.

Repeated failure
I've had four of these, and they all failed for no apparent reason following light use. Will not be purchasing anything made by this company again.

Regular size mattress

I didn’t sleep very well. Used it 3 times and could not get comfortable. Fairly noisy when moving around. Insulated mattress was supposed to keep me warm, but, with temperatures in the 40’s, I was chilly. Also, I was in a 3-season tent and a 20-degree rated sleeping bag. Perhaps I was wearing too much clothes and was too hot. I don’t know for sure, and I am not going to go back and try something else. Product is also pretty heavy. I was “Bikepacking”, so not so much an issue as a “backpacker” would have. Did like the included inflation bag, definitely saves the lungs.

Leaks after less than a year

I bought the Big Agnes mattress in November of 2020 and have used it for a total of about 30 nights on my sailboat. It worked great up until my last trip when it started leaking. I have found and repaired two leaks and have found a third that I am repairing. All three that I found were on top and in the dimples where it looks like the baffles are welded. At $200 for the mattress I was expecting much better durability. As far as comfort goes, the mattress was very comfortable and easy to inflate with the inflating bag. I really liked the mattress but it looks like I may to buy a new one if I keep finding more leaks and I don't think I will risk getting another Big Agnes.

Love this pad

This pad has revolutionized backpacking for me. I had an ultralight Thermarest for years and slept horribly while camping. I am a side sleeper and couldn’t stay on the pad and it was so loud it woke me up when I turned over. This pad is a dream. I can fit curled up in my side and my hip doesn’t dig into the ground. It is much quieter. I also like the slightly bigger cells on each side that cradle you in. The valve to let air out to get the perfect amount of air is great. I am not a big person but got the wide so I’d have room to turn over easily and glad I got that size. It’s heavy but well worth the weight to finally get some sleep on the trail.

Amazing Pad

I used this pad all summer long, and now into the fall. Temps dropped to just below freezing last weekend in the Adirondacks, and this pad kept me comfy and warm. I'm also a side sleeper, and have had no pains whatsoever. As a comparison, the other campers were using Thermarest Prolite Apex sleeping pads, and all I heard from them was complaints about the lack of padding and lack of insulation. Also, the Thermarests did not pack down nearly as small as my Big Agnes. I personally think that the inflation bag could be a bit bigger, but that's a nitpick. I can still deploy this pad in just a few minutes. Seriously, this pad is monster good.

Felt great before it died

I love the comfort and width of Big Agnes products but haven't had good luck with sleeping pads. This one lasted 3 trips in 2 years before was so uncomfortable it had to be retired. Because mine sleeps so well when it didn't spring a leak (2 different pads of another BA type-one lasted 4 trips, the other 2) I bought this for my son. He is 110 lbs and not rough. Several of the sections became unsealed resulting in big bubbles instead of an even sleeping surface. Not what we expected for what we paid. Guess we will have to try another brand. Loved this one as the night's sleep is akin to my bed, but can't keep paying this every couple years.

Great for side sleepers

I've had two other sleeping pads before finding this one, but since becoming a side sleeper in the past few years, I've noticed that my other pads felt like I was sleeping on a rock. They were too firm with no give to them to allow me to sleep on my side. I just took this sleeping pad back packing for the first time yesterday and found it to be very comfortable. I usually don't sleep well while camping but actually slept through the night with this pad, and with the high R value, I didn't feel any coldness from the ground below and it was around 30 degrees last night. I also felt like it was pretty quiet when moving around on the pad. This is definitely a winner for me.

Worth every penny....

Purchased this as I finally got to spoil myself with good camping gear. Took it on a backpack trek into Eleven Mile State Park in Colorado in December. Low was 1° and this thing coupled with my 20° bag kept me warm and very comfortable all night. The included blowup bag made inflating this thing so much easier in the cold as I had no worries about moisture and possible freezing inside the pad. Overall Big Agnes hit a homerun on this bad boy. Must have for any camper. For longer hikes where every once counts I would find something else to shave off the gear list as you will be thanking yourself when you finally call it a night.

Awesome Product - Slept on for four months

Rode a bicycle from the Atlantic to the Pacific this summer and this thing performed spectacularly. Extremely comfortable - never had any comfort issues. The way the baffles are laid out prevents you from running off the side - it’s very easy to forget you’re on a glorified pool toy. One leak towards the very end from the valve, but a new one is included and I was using it daily so I’m not mad about it. Easy to fill with bag included. Probably one of my most valued items. Does not compress any further once it’s in its bag. Worth it for cyclists with a touring setup - for hikers it uses an awful lot of real estate.

Love it

Finally upgraded from my basic Thermarest to this pad after accepting that I couldn't go one more sleepless night in the backcountry. Like everyone else has stated, it's great for sidesleepers like myself and my hips no longer hit the ground keeping me awake. The regular (non-wide) version is perfect for my height and I'm glad I didn't opt for the wider version because I no longer toss and turn trying to get confortable and don't think it would make a difference. It's also easy to roll back up and I can actually get it back in the stuff sack which I was never able to do with the Thermarest. The inflation sack takes some getting used to but it's not so bad and the extra effort is worth it to keep excess moisture out of the pad.

Side-sleepers delight

Side sleepers everywhere should be considering this pad. We were looking for something to make backpacking more comfortable now that we're middle-aged with all the lingering aches and slow recovery that come along with that. As a side sleeper, I've never been fully comfortable on a foam pad or a thermarest self-inflating mattress. We decided to try these out. We just completed a backpack in Grand Canyon and I've never slept better! They're a little heavier than is ideal, but I'm SO willing to carry the weight if it means I get a comfy nights rest. Love these!
