Great upgrade from the old version
This was replacement for my old hydraulics pack -- and I have to say it's an upgrade in every way. My biggest concern with these things was stale water developing water and getting me sick. This version is much easier to disassemble and clean -- it splits apart in more parts which makes cleaning simpler. On a different note, if you don't have one of these packs, it's a game changer for hiking. Being able to take a sip of water whenever I need makes a WORLD of difference. Not to mention it's super easy to carry it, because water is heavy and can slosh around. Much easier than a water bottle.
Highly recommend
I was definitely excited when given the opportunity to test the new Osprey 1.5 liter reservoir. I’m a big fan of all things Osprey and have several of their packs in different sizes, many that are 10-15 years old. This new reservoir is great! I washed it up first thing after opening by filling it with water and soap, then sealed it and gave it a good shake to test for leak etc. It is super easy to fill up and seal and then subsequently empty and rinse. There was zero leakage. After rinsing, I refilled and added some lemon juice to eliminate that plastic-y taste that all bladders have when they’re brand new. The quick connect worked perfectly and the bite valve provided excellent water flow. I popped it into one of my old Osprey packs and of course it fit exactly as it was supposed to. I also popped it into one of my many hydration vests. It comes with a magnet that you can attack to whatever pack or vest that you are wearing, if that pack doesn’t already have one, to keep your valve exactly where you want it. It’s the best bladder I own now and so if you’re looking to upgrade or replace an aging bladder, I highly recommend.
An acquired taste.
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. This is the second reservoir I have every owned. The first is technically my partner's and about 15 years old. That pack was eventually abandoned in favor of a hip pack with two water holders. Since I'm more likely to go out on my own, I figured I would use this one. Except... whoa. The smell of the liner is overpowering, even after I set it out for four days. I'm familiar with plastic off gassing but I was a little surprised that it was so pungent. When I did fill it and take a sip... well, it's like drinking out of an inflatable toy. If you've ever had the dubious pleasure of inflating a toy with your mouth, you'll know what I mean. After drinking (reluctantly) from it I spent the next half hour spitting to get the taste out of my mouth. The good news is that it's so easy to fill! I did have a moment of frustration slipping off the red top that secures the liner. Once that rigid bar is off, you can grasp the neck of the liner to open and fill. The handle was helpful but honestly, it's been most convenient for moving it around. For folks like me who keep forgetting to have their gear in one spot. The tube is easy to assemble; you insert the longer piece until it clicks. The magnetic dongle hasn't been useful when I walked and hiked, but it's great for storing the hose. I had no problem using the mouthpiece and asked one of my kids to give it a try. They also found it easy to use. I knocked off 2 stars for the smell and after-taste. I'm not a fan of food and drink products that offend my sense of smell or taste. It may dissipate in the following weeks, but I had to review this quickly. There's also a chance that many prospective buyers are expecting this scent and taste or not as sensitive.
Wary at first but now love it!
I was a little skeptical of this bladder design when I received it. But I loved it! The closure for it is way easier and more secure than the usual screw cap. It was is easy to make the opening wider to fill it up. And I feel like I get more water in it than when filling up a bladder with the screw cap. It slides into my backpack super easily and I wasn't worried about it leaking at all. It dried out faster and easier than the traditional screw cap style.
Well designed and compact
When I travel I love the REI Flash 18 pack to throw in for day trips and hiking. But the hydro pack I had collapsed inside the pack. But this Osprey 1.5 is perfect and packable to go with this and any day pack you have. Yes it is a little more money, but the snap apart hose makes it easy to clean... the Y shaped plastic guard helps keep it shape... and the clip easily keep the reservoir from falling to the bottom of the pack. I just took this on a hiking trip to Arizona and it worked incredibly well and packs flat. I am planning to take it on a bike trip in the Netherlands next month.
Great for day hikes!
I love this Osprey Hydraulics LT 1.5L Reservoir. It is super easy to fill at the fridge dispenser prior to a day hike because the neck flap sits flat against the filling tab of my fridge. I don't usually take a bladder on overnight backpacking trips, so I cannot comment on its ease of use of the trail. That said, squeezing the sides to open the top is simple, so I figure it would be easy to fill using my filtering system. The fold top and sliding lock ensures a secure closing with no leaks. Opening and closing the bite valve was simple and the magnet ensured it was always within reach and where I needed it. The Reservoir fits easily into my Osprey day back and I was able to secure it with the pack's bladder clip. Cleaning the tubing is a breeze using the Osprey brush, and the quick connect hose that is now midway up the tubing makes it even easier!
Great Design but poor execution & life expectancy
Loved the simplicity and functionality of this LT Reservoir. I had the 2.5 Liter bladder. The zip closure is not well designed. Just got back from using it on the Camino de Santiago (Camino Frances). We were fortunate that we had taken patch kits for the bladder with us. The bladders tore where the zip closed on one side (one side is reinforced, the other is not - poor engineering). We also had to use lubricant on the zip closure to keep it from further damage to the bladder.
New handle stops reservoir from slipping in hands!
The snow is gone and I was super excited to get this new reservoir into my running vest and try it out! But first, I needed to clean it and get it in the bag. The handle is a new addition to this model and it is very helpful. Both filling the bladder and carrying it around. This may not seem like a big deal (maybe the old little lip thing at the top worked for you) if you are only filling one pack at a time. I am usually filling 3-5 for my family and these things get slippery when wet. I found the handle a great improvement which made the whole process quicker. The handle does make it impossible (or maybe just I cannot do it) to flip inside out. You may want to put something inside to help dry since you will not be able to flip. It opens wide to clean and is easy to get into all the corners. The hose comes apart intuitively making it easy to brush clean. The bladder still closes with a slide. and stayed securely closed. It was easy to attach inside my vest and stayed secure through my runs. The bite valve is easy to use and the hose can also twist off to prevent leaching water in route. The 1.5L is the size I use most often for runs and hikes. I know many people may want more water, but I do not want to carry more weight than I have to and this size gets me through most activities. This bladder is worth the upgrade if you are in need of a new insert. I am definitely upgrading my kids inserts so we all have the handle!
Good reservoir for running/hiking
I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. The Osprey Hydraulics LT Reservoir is surprisingly easy to fill and close, and the baffles and detachable straw help to keep it open for drying after use. The reservoir fit easily in my running pack suspended from the hook with minimal bouncing. The magnet kept the straw in place and unobtrusive while running and walking. When running, other than the sloshing noise, I didn't even notice the reservoir was in my pack, so I will be happy to use it this summer instead of bottles
Great opening for filling and cleaning!
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. Good size (50 oz), wide open on top for easy cleaning and filling, and the very handle is low profile but sturdy. The drink tube is very ridged, but I guess it will be durable. A magnet is supplied with a detachable piece for your gear, which I lost already (but just found) and I thought it wasn’t really necessary, I’ll probably lose it again.
