Based on mountain hardwear's sizing chart, I should be a size small, measuring in at 71 cm at the waist. However, the waist on these are HUGE. I have attached photos to show. The pants fit my thighs and butt appropriately, so I don't think sizing down would help.
I bought these pants after tearing the bum in my other hiking pants in the first few uses. I spent a long time researching good options as I wanted something durable and capable in the mountains. They have been stellar during many camping and surf trips over the Vancouver Island Fall-winter-spring. This weekend, I went on my first real outing on a multi-day traverse, and when descending a rocky scree slope, I ripped the bum. Dang, I'll be repairing these and keeping them rolling into the next trip. They do fit larger, but the pull adjust is very handy. The leg cuffs have a pull adjust and clip to keep rocks out of your pants, which, depending on your needs, is great or annoying, but I've found rolling these up helps.
These pants are my go-to performance pants. I use them for hiking, multipitch climbing and ice climbing with a pair of leggings inside. The medium gives me a comfortable fit which is not too snug so I am able to layer it and also use it on long trips without washing. The fabric is super durable. I love the pockets with zippers which are big enough to fit my phone, chapsticks, a snack! Woulds definitely be buying again!
Finally!!! A pair of hiking / outdoor pants that fit me! I am 5'6" and weigh 113 and ordered an XS. These pants fit like they were made for me! I just ordered two more pairs for my trip out west. I will look for this brand in the future!
I took a chance on a final sale item because I needed a winter hiking pants with large pockets. I have short legs and MH have them in petite. These seemed to check so many boxes. The pants are very well made. I am 5'2", 140lb-ish. I normally wear size 6-8 depending on brands so I ordered M. Feel like 10 or 12 to me. Not only they are very large, the pants had very odd fitting. They have very high waist and deep crotch length. The front abdomen area has an extra bagginess, yet the hip is slightly snug. It's like as if they just cut men's pants short or something. Maybe works for someone with boyish figure to apple shape person..but not recommended for pear shape curvy figure women. The cinching belt is small and does not look good. The pants got "mom jeans look", as my husband described. Very disappointed.
I have bought these pants 2x before. This time I am disappointed in the fit and the material weight. They sag at the crotch badly despite the proper fit around the hips and waist, It is almost like they designed it to be an over pant. Definitely high waisted not like the previous pants. The material weight is less than before, despite the cost being a lot more. Below -5 C I have to wear my merino wool underwear to stay warm, where in the past the pants kept me reasonably warm on a fast walk at -15 C. Fits big in my opinion. I original wore an 8 in these pants. I first ordered a medium due to the measuring chart, had to send them back to get the small and still it is very generous. Of course it cost me additional shipping fees despite their chart being off. I will have to look elsewhere for my fall and winter pants in the future.
Nice fit and true to size for L/R. Having a more generous derrière, it’s important I have a generous cut all the way into the thighs. These work well. Material and seams are stellar. Color is refreshing; it seems females get less attractive color choices. MH: please bring back the generous flair cut in bells; that shape flatters “hippier” gals.
I will be using these for shoulder season hiking, some mountaineering, and cross country skiing. I have not had a chance to use these in the field, but have some first impressions. As far as material, they seem very durable and abrasion resistant. The fabric is very stretchy, though they are not the thickest and not super soft inside. I'll need baselayers underneath. I'm 5'4" and 140lbs fairly straight uniform body shape (no curves), got a M regular and they are rather baggy but fit better with another layer. The overall size is a bit off for me and I'm debating returning them. The rise is quite tall and even pulled up to my belly button they still sag a few inches below the crotch. Also a little tight in the waist for how baggy the legs are. Definitely a high rise pant meant for someone with a little shape. I feel like they may sag down below the waist over the course of the day, even with the cinch. Love the deep front pockets and all the other features though.
I LOVE these pants. I bought them as I'm starting to train for a glacieted peak climb and have worn them in snow and rain. By clipping the pants onto my boots and synching them down, I haven't had a need for gaiters. They're lightweight, flexible, but still hold up to the elements. Highly recommend!
If you like a longer crotch these pants will be for you. These pants seem more of an our layered pant. The material is a little stiffer than expected.
