Depends on what you’re looking for
I’m a chocolate lover - so I was expecting these to have more of a “chocolate” flavor to them. I felt they were a bit bland - but could be just me and my preferences! Also the texture caught me by surprise, sort of mushed up/together already. For me, I think they get the job done as a snack bar but wouldn’t be a “go-to”. Again, I think it’s my personal preference on flavor/texture.
Small, tasty trail-mix style bars
Tried the macadamia chocolate bars. Organic ingredients with a good selection of nuts and fruits. The added sugar looks like it comes from the chocolate and maple syrup. This seems pretty similar to a ProBar and tastes like one too. Which is to say, it tastes really good! Only nitpick is that each bar is plastic wrapped at only 210 calories each, which is not the most filling when out on a hike. They do say "snack bar," but with these ingredients I would personally prefer more of a meal bar that was a little bigger. For all the marketing of organic, vegan ingredients and recyclable box, there's still a lot of plastic waste here.
Nice for trail or when at home doing yard work
I tried the Yes Bar dark chocolate and cinnamon bars several times during my midday walks of 3.5-r miles in our local forests and I also had one for a snack when doing some extensive yard work pruning shrubs and trees. I thought the bar’s soft consistency was nice, you didn’t struggle to take a bite, you can just easily bite off a piece. For each bar I noticed the hint of cinnamon as I took the first bite, probably smelling it as I started to chew it. The nuts and chocolate worked well together with neither overpowering the other, just blending together. I appreciated the softness of the bar because on these walks of an hour and a half or so I don’t take a water bottle, and I didn’t need water to enjoy these bars. After the first bar, I tried to have the. Near the beginning of my walk or when I knew I had at least an hour or more to keep my heart rate up and muscles working so that I’d hopefully burn the calories in the bar and not store them around my waist. Being a bit older in my mid 60s I did read the Nutrition Facts and saw that each of these bars contained 20% of the daily value for saturated fat. I felt this was ok as long as I was being active, active enough to to break a sweat, and hopefully metabolize the fats and not store them. Over all this is a nice product and I found them enjoyable.
Tasty, convenient, and not too sweet
Snack bars are so convenient for the trail and even for the office - any time one needs something filling and reasonably healthy but there isn't time for a full meal. Yes bars are a recent entry into that market and are billed as vegan, grain-free, and paleo. While I don't require any of those three labels, they are all good things so I was eager to try Yes bars and got the strawberry-coconut flavor. Most snack bars are too sweet for me. What I liked best about Yes bars is that they are *not* overly sweet! There is a delicate, natural sweetness to them, and the label lists maple syrup as the fourth ingredient, but they taste more like nut-and-fruit sustenance than a decadent dessert - kind of like eating muesli. They keep me full for awhile and I will likely buy them again. Sometimes 220 calories is more than I want (or need) and I do wish there was a lower calorie options. I forgot to take a photo of the Nutrition Facts, so here are a few key ones: 220 calories; 16g of fat (no transfat); 15g of carbs; 9g of sugar (4 g added); and 5g of protein.
Taste great and held up well jn summer travel
This is definitely a good snack bar to carry with you when out and about. I put them in my waistpack for a day of canoeing in the heat and humidity. I was pleasantly surprised that it did not get messed up from being in there (possibility of being squished and in the heat etc) and held its shape really well. Personally for me a big deterrent of snack bars is when they get super melty and fall apart. This bar held up so well AND was really good tasting. I appreciated the quality ingredients and flavour. I didn't even have melty chocolate pieces to deal with so I was happy.
My new hiking go-to
I’m the person who has a Clif bar in every bag, just in case. On hikes, I’ll bring a couple, and usually have half a bar during snack breaks. But I think I’m switching to these Yes chocolate snack bars, for three reasons: 1) they are shareable with everyone I usually hike with, including those who are vegan, celiac, and have peanut allergies. 2) they have good chunks of quality chocolate, but aren’t sickly sweet. 3) The size is right for a true snack for me (see photo, women's size 8.5 hiking boot for scale). I also like the texture, chewy enough to feel substantial but not tooth-breaking. Cons? Probably on the small side for some hikers.
My Friend loves them
I wasn’t too much of a fan of these so I thought “hey lemme see if my friend would like them” seeing that they were gluten free, vegan, grain free, all the stuff my friend is either allergic too or doesn’t eat due to dietary restrictions. Well he loved them, so much he finished the entire box within the day. He said that he really enjoyed the maple syrup in it and enjoyed that it had pumpkin seeds and could totally see him packing them for a hike. So I believe that’s a win in Yes Bar’s book!
Tasty, Satisfying, and Healthy
I'm always looking for snack bars that are healthy and provide the boost of energy I need on the trail, whether for hiking or performing trail work. YES Bars met that need, and then some. I have found that other brands sit kind of heavy on my stomach. Not so with YES Bar. I'm originally from New England, so I'm a sucker for anything maple. While the maple flavor was a little less robust than I would have liked, the combination of seeds and nuts was perfectly balanced. I've found my snack brand for future hikes.
Lots of fat, very little taste
This snack bar reminds me of the hash you can make with a lot of different leftovers. It’s all good stuff, but you can’t really taste any of it. The ingredients listed for the “dark chocolate chip with cinnamon and vanilla” flavor include lots of nuts and a little chocolate. Cinnamon and vanilla extract are last in the list. I can’t taste anything in particular. Each of these snack bars contains 16 grams of fat and 8 grams of sugar (7 of which are added). Honestly, I’m not impressed. Too high in calories, too high in fat and sugars, not enough taste.
Perfect for hiking or any outdoor activity
The 'YES' dark chocolate snack bars are delicious! Not too sweet or salty, the texture is firm but not hard or too chewy, the bar doesn't crumble and the serving size is just right for a quick snack on the trail. I'm definitely stocking these at home and in my backpack. I highly recommend this product!
