The Treeline Rain Shell is an excellent combination of protection and weight based on its purpose of being a high mountain rain jacket. The jacket fits a nice balance of not too light and not too heavy and slots in a great all purpose function. Fit is great on the Jacket overall. I am 5'11" 175lbs and a Medium fit great with still a little room to add a layer underneath if needed. Sleeves felt a touch long, but the Velcro cuffs work well to get a custom fit if needed. I wish it was a different material than Velcro, but really not that bad. Overall length is perfect as well as it sits not too far below my waist. Construction and feel of this jacket is where I think it shines. It is a step above the very light weight rain jackets, but sits below a heavier style outer shell. This makes it a great option as it gives a little more sturdy feel, but doesn't sacrifice too much on the weight end. Taped seams and overall construction are excellent and I have had no issues so far. The zipper is a little tough as they have gone through sealing the zipper rather than add a fold of material. So far it has worked well. Zipper pockets are a good size and sit well on the jacket. The hood has an excellent construction as well with a stiffer edge that allows the hood to sit well on your head. The Cinch cord on the hood allows a dialed fit if you don't need the extra space and is well protected. Cord cinch on the waist works great as well. Breathability wise it isn't and I really don't expect it to be. I am not going to knock a star hear even though they claim to be breathable. I would rather have the weather protection than the breathability. That is why I am using the jacket. That being said, it is a little warmer than those really light weight jackets so be prepared there. Great for when the temperature drops and you need a little extra warmth. I found it is a little sauna suit like at higher activity levels, but again was not expecting it to breathe well. So far I have yet to find a fault on this jacket. Yeah, it is warm, but the trade off on the performance is well worth it. This is now my go-to just in case rain jacket while hiking and will be in pack from now on.
The Black Diamond Men's Treeline Rain Shell is a good lightweight shell, perfect for travelling and hiking. It runs on the larger size, but it is perfect like this since it is not restrictive and I can move around freely. The wrist straps and hood cinch works good. I was able to stay dry during the rain while hiking. There are two zippered side pockets, as well as a zippered chest pocket.
I have not had a lot of rain yet but I have had some heavy short downpours including a very heavy hail storm. No leakage detected. Very light fabric and seams are sealed well. Good size pockets and easy to seal hook and loop sleeves. It looks good on me, which is important. A well-made product but I have a concern. This does not have a zipper flap, outside or inside the jacket. I did not get to test in the wind long enough to know if water could get through the front zipper.
I really like the lightweight style of this jacket and minimal branding. Fit is very good and it's easily packable. It's good for lightweight rain but doesn't stand up well when hiking in a consistent rain. I'm a PNW native and used to getting wet in the outdoors, I walked in a steady rainfall for 30+ minutes and it was fine but after about 1hr outdoors in the rain it started to seep through and absorb the rain. Pretty sure that DWR is overrated marketing at this point. For light rainfall this jacket is great but extended periods outdoors in the rain it's not a good choice. Still searching for that illusive jacket.
I was shocked by the texture of the material as soon as I got it, there was no sense of cheapness. The touch is great, and the special breathable design on the back is very interesting and helpful for heat dissipation. I really like this piece of clothing.
This is a great jacket. I am someone who gets hot easily, especially when wearing anything remotely water resistant. This jacket has great breathability and does well at keeping the water out. It is light weight and easy to move in without being crinkly loud. I would suggest this to a friend.
As someone who has a slight obsession with waterproof jackets I was really excited for the opportunity to review this piece of Black Diamond kit. Initially taking it for some dog walks I was happy with the water repellency in light rain. The cut for me is slightly boxy not unlike similar offerings from other brand’s entry level rain jackets. I was struggling to figure out where this jacket would really shine until I took it for a run. At 9 oz. I didn’t really notice it in my running best. Best of all that slightly boxy fit allowed this jacket to easily slip on over my running vest! That has always been a problem with more fitted jackets. Running in 2L and 2.5L jackets it’s never fun as they tend to be clammy without a brushed inner backing material but the giant back vent really seemed to help with that! This jacket will now me be my go to for fast and light excursions where I choose a running vest over a backpack.
Lightweight jacket that was great at first but the waterproofing of the jacket has not held up for the 9 months I have had the jacket the only moderate use. The shell no longer repels rain and the fabric becomes saturated in the rain after only 1-2 minutes.
Finally got to wear the Treeline Rain shell during the most recent rainstorm, It exceeded my expectation! The water proofing was amazing after several hours walking the trail during a rain storm, no water made it thru! The back vent was great letting the heat escape without letting water in! Black Diamond has never let me down with there gear! Breathable and waterproof! I will definitely be investing in the Treeline system!
I do really like how well made the jacket seems and it fits me well (6'3", 220). I have very long arms and the sleeve length is great, no matter if I'm bending or reaching I'm covered. Looking to see if the store can exchange for a different color as this "orange" isn't orange. Otherwise it's a killer jacket that will come in handy this year. Love that is 9 oz and feels well made with no bulk. Purchased an XL size.
