Brimming with Blueberries and Peaches
FRUIT FORWARD Goodness. I had an opportunity to trek out to Thunderbird State Park for a cool morning paddle with a friend and we were starved by the time we made it back on the bank. We hunted around the van, popped out a stove, set some water to boil and grabbed a bag of Backpacker's Pantry Blueberry Peach Crisp; which happens to rehydrate in the same amount of time it takes to French press a pot of good coffee, seven minutes. I like to add a little extra water to this one to bring it more to an oatmeal consistency rather than that of a parfait; upping the 1.25 cups recommended to near 2 cups for the whole bag; which contains two servings. I find the extra water also tames the brown sugar a little and adds a great sip to the finish. This breakfast is simple, delish and ready in about 15 minutes max; from stove set up to the first bite. I love that when I read the label, I know what every ingredient is in this package. If you're famished, you'll easily be able to finish both portions. There are 21 grams of sugar per serving. Worth being aware of if you are sugar averse but I find the sweetness to be near perfect; mostly fructose/peachy with a ting of brown sugar. Who wouldn't love that? If you like a healthy fruit forward breakfast, you're gonna love this one. Side note, try hydrating this with cold water on a hot day. It's just as much a treat as having it hot.
A treat in the backcountry!
I wasn't sure if the Backpacker's Pantry Blueberry Peach Crisp was meant for breakfast or dessert, but quickly decided it was going down for dessert after backpacking 7 miles to Minaret Lake in the Eastern Sierra. My partner and I split the package after eating ramen for dinner. We shared spoonfuls while glancing at beautiful views of Clyde Minaret. The peaches were a treat and the coconut strips were a hidden gem. Delicious! We highly recommend this as dessert on your next trip. It also would pair well with oatmeal foe breakfast. One person could finish it as a meal or split it with another person along with another dish, or just add more oatmeal.
Might try it for breakfast
The thing I liked best about this item was the big slices of peaches (and they actually tasted like real peaches!). The flavor was very good— not overly sweet, nor overwhelmed by cinnamon, simple and fresh-tasting ingredients. The "Crisp" part of this desert isn't; what you get instead is basically oatmeal, which isn't bad, but not really a desert (could they have made this a dry add-on in a separate pouch?). My husband and I agreed this would make a great alternative to the standard breakfast oatmeals out there. If they had called it something beside a crisp and billed it as an obvious breakfast item, I would have given it five stars.
Good trail food
The backpackers pantry peach crisp comes packaged like most meals of this type. Opening it up the bag was actually a little bigger than I expected on the bottom which was awesome. Just the right size to sit upright while cooking. It says to use a cup and a half of water but I think the next time I make it I will be somewhere between 3/4 and 1 cup. 1.5 cups was a little soopy for my taste. All that said this was very good for a freeze dried desert. Deserts are always a great treat on the trail so when they are good it makes them that much better and this fit the bill. Definitely 2 servings worth, my 2 year old daughter ate as much of it as I did and there was still some left. If your looking for a space saving desert for a hiking or hunting trip and are going to have your stove along, than Definitely give this a try.
Loads of Blueberries and Peaches
The product was ample serving size for me. It has lots of blueberries and peaches. It was sweeter than expected. The package recommends 1-1/4 cup of boiling water and I found it was to much water unless you like it loose vs thick. Overall, it was a great morning breakfast with loads of fruit in it with a great flavor. I received free product in exchange for an honest review.
Hey, I Really Liked It
My first long-distance hike, I took a bunch of different dehydrated food packs from a few different brands--and didn't find any even-4⭐ selections. The rehydrated texture is something you get used to, maybe? So I went back to rice and oatmeal with backpack seasonings. Then, REI sent me this blueberry crisp as a tester, so I for sure wanted to try it. I was really not expecting much. Of course, if you're expecting homemade fresh, you're not going to be happy. Still, this was tasty without chalky, smooth and crunchy bits rather than just a layer of slime, and a mix of several distinct flavors rather than the rehydrated uniflavor. This can go into the backpack.
Tasty and easy to make
This snack was super easy, add boiling water, stir, and wait a few minutes. It was also pretty tasty. Although I thought the dried peach pieces were apple, it was still good. I made mine at about 2000’ and the instructions are for 5k. Mine ended up more like a runny oatmeal with fruit pieces. Tasted good but was not what I expected. I could have used a bit less water I think. I heated up a little more than instructed to allow for boil off. Overall a good product. Cooked in the package and I ate it out of the package, so no dishes! Would be a nice treat in the backcountry but I’d do something different when car camping.
Is it Breakfast or Dessert?
Either way it is really tasty! We usually prepare our own meals for backpacking, so I was excited to try a backpackers pantry one since I know they are popular. Pleasantly surprised with how much fruit was in it, and how large the peach chunks (actual slices) were. It is a bit on the sweeter side (though not overly so), so it's probably more of a dessert item, but honestly I'd pack this for a backcountry breakfast any day.
Taste was okay... Directions will give you soup!
The directions for the packet say to add 300ml of boiling water to the packet and wait 7min. If you follow those directions you'll end up with blueberry peach oatmeal soup instead of crisp. I'd recommend putting half that amount and then adding more as necessary to your desired consistency. I followed the directions (300ml) and ended up adding about 1/2 cup of additional oats and a tablespoon of sugar and letting it sit for an additional 5min (one packet of maple brown sugar oatmeal would probably work too). That gave me more of a blueberry peach oatmeal rather than a crisp. Added two scoops of vanilla ice cream and it turned out okay. Also it says 2 servings but easily fed 3 of us. To be fair, the taste is fine, but I feel like the directions are off by a bit. If I bought this in the future I'd use less water and maybe put it in a skillet to actually give it some crisp.
A sweet treat on the trails!
As someone with a sweet tooth, I really loved this blueberry peach crisp. The dried fruit, coconut, and cinnamon gave it a lot of flavor! I would suggest adding less than the recommended amount of water, perhaps 1 cup instead of 1 1/4 cups. The crisp came out slightly soupy with the 1 1/4 cups of water, but was still a yummy treat at the end of the day next to the campfire. Serving size is 2!
