Smells good and kid approved
The first time we put this on my son he said it smells amazing, and it does! It blends in really great, we used it out kayaking, fishing, at the zoo, the playground, the pool, and just out and about during our July 4 activities, so you know the sun was hot and beating down on us in Kansas! He never got sunburnt! It is a bit oily/greasy, but again, it blends in well and it doesn’t turn your kids white from zinc! I gave it a 4 just because of the greasiness and it’s hard to get off your hands so it gets on your phone, but it really is great sunscreen. Would 100% buy again, especially since my son loves it and the smell. A little also goes a long way. I’ve used it over a handful of times and it still has plenty left! Highly recommend, just keep a towel near to wipe your hands.
Great sunscreen for the blazing Florida heat!
I’ve used this sunscreen on many different occasions now in the blazing Florida summer sun. A few notes about the sunscreen itself: it comes out VERY thick and you really have to squeeze the tube, however it covers very well. It also spreads quite easily considering the viscosity. I used this on my kids who range from 2.5 to 6 years old and whom all have very fair skin. This sunscreen worked like a charm for us throughout a trip to Disney World and for multiple days at the beach and pool. It stays on incredibly well even through sweat, towel drying and brushing off sand. One thing I was happily surprised with is that despite it being white coming out of the tube, it went on completely clear. Some other zinc based sunscreens go on very white and take a lot of spreading in order for it to blend in but that was not the case with Badger. Living in Florida, sunscreen is part of our daily lives which makes me really consider ingredients closely. This is another reason I like this sunscreen, simple ingredients without sacrificing protection.
Effective but not my favorite
I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. For my kids, I typically use a different brand but gave this a try during a recent vacation to the Azores where my 5 year old hiked and did outdoor water sports activities. Pros: does not leave a white residue (does leave slight sheen) and he did not burn! Cons: did not love the fragrance, it seemed super thick so I felt I used more than typically would do get necessary coverage, also prefer an SPF 50 when possible. Overall, I would say that I will probably stick to the current product I use but it was good to know that this is effective in case we need to purchase an alternative in the future. My son didn’t mind the application and said it was fine, so honestly that’s a pretty good recommendation coming from him.
Smells delicious!
I tried out this sunscreen on a few outdoor excursions with my son at the lake and the bay, and the first thing we noticed was the scent. It is a very mild, pleasant aroma that smells like creamsicle. This might be the first sunscreen I’ve tried that had a scent, and I really liked that. My son was also more willing to subject himself to sunscreen application since it smelled like a desert. As far as sun protection, I didn’t notice any burning on either of us and we spent two hours at the beach in full sun on the day we were out the longest. The only thing I didn’t like was that the sunscreen is pretty thick and greasy. It stays on for hours, and we had to shower to get it off. That is the trade off of more eco-friendly products, though, I think, and honestly the greasiness is not too bad.
New favorite sunscreen
I have a new favorite sunscreen, not just for my kid, but myself too. Since getting this sunscreen cream, one of us in my family has used it nearly every day. The tangerine & vanilla scent is wonderful, I love that it doesn’t smell like typical sunscreens. I was impressed too by the texture. It feels like body butter (some might not like that…my sister-in-law thought it was gross) but it felt nourishing and isn’t greasy. It absorbs into the skin fairly quickly (before and after picture). Most zinc sunscreens I’ve used leave a white residue on the skin, which is partially why it’s protecting you, but I’m not too much of a fan of the pasty look. As I said, we’ve been wearing it almost every day for weeks and the 2.9 fl oz size is still going strong. I also have sensitive skin and I didn’t experience any issues, most likely due to the hypoallergenic status AND the scents are real, not some unknown “fragrance”. I’m a fan, I’ll continue buying this product and won’t be going back to anything else. P.S. No sunburns! (Which is the most important part!) We’ve been in the sun every day it’s out since summer finally started in Washington.
Kids' Favorite Sunscreen
We have been Badger fans for many years. I have tried MANY mineral sunscreens and Badger is our family favorite. This particular Kids' version is my kids' favorite because they love the tangerine vanilla scent. This is a mineral sunscreen, so it does have a pretty intense white cast to it when you first apply. My kids and I have pretty light skin but it is still quite obvious when you apply it. Darker skin tones it would probably be even more obvious. It might be nice to offer the kid sunscreen in a tinted version. I think that in the context of outdoor adventures, it isn't really an issue if our sunscreen is visible and the kids do not mind. Their criteria are scent and feel on their skin and my kids have started checking to make sure I grabbed this particular sunscreen! This is a pretty thick oil based sunscreen. It stays on very well in the water and through sweating. My kids strongly prefer the slightly oily feel on their skin to the slightly tacky feel that some of the dry touch type sunscreens can give. It soaks in over time to leave their skin feeling moisturized but not excessively greasy. I like this sunscreen because it smells nice and it has the simplest ingredient list of any sunscreen I've found. This is really important to me since kids are often swimming in rivers and lakes (potentially getting some in the water in the process) or wearing this when camping where we might not bathe for a few days so this will stay on their skin. I also don't mind applying this sunscreen as much as some of the others which don't have a nice skin feel. It is pretty easy to wipe the excess off my hands with a damp cloth. This sunscreen is very effective but you do need to put it on pretty thick. The downsides to this product are the white cast and some might find the oil based nature unpleasant. It will leave marks on your clothing but I find that it comes out easily in the wash.
Excellent Protection
This sunscreen rubs in smoothly, doesn’t leave the skin greasy, and most importantly- it works. No sunburns. We used it over a two-week Colorado mountains camping trip and had no sunburns. It smells nice, which is a lovely little addition. But most importantly- it kept my kids’ skin protected at high altitude.
A little thick (might be a pro) but works great!
I was a little skeptical about this product because, while we always use mineral sunscreens, we're quite picky because many leave a white cast and are just very obvious when on. Some also seem to just sit on the skin and never absorb. My son (6) immediately loved the tube as he's a huge fan of sea animals and, while it did come out thick from the tube and took some effort to squeeze out (maybe actually a good thing on really hot days!), it spread easily and absorbed quickly. Scents are another thing we usually avoid and while this one is definitely present, it's actually quite nice. It dissipates after a few minutes but if I smell my hands after applying it, they are still lightly fragrant. I also like the site of the tube (2.9fl oz), since it means it can travel in hand luggage without issue if we're flying somewhere and it's a good size for a shorter vacation. I would definitely buy this again!
Overly thick and moisturizing
We're always game to try new mineral-based sunscreens. This product is a natural, effective, and very nice-smelling mineral sunscreen. Our family has worn it on very exposed, sometimes midday, outdoor activities, and we don't get overly dark (we don't tend to burn). That said, I would not regularly use it because of the texture and finish. I appreciate the natural ingredients and that it rubs easily to a clear finish on darker skin (see photo), but it feels as you would expect from such an oil-heavy formulation. It feels like a thick balm out of the tube and sits as a heavy layer on your skin. It's like lipbalm, it never fully absorbs. I would only use it if I don't plan to be in contact with fabrics, car seats, etc. So yes, it works, but the best sunscreen is one that you will use, and I wouldn't recommend this one for the majority of use cases.
Hot Garbage
*I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review.* In theory, this product should be absolutely amazing. In practice, this sunscreen is awful! Is it water resistant? Yes. Will it keep you from burning? Yes, as long as you apply as instructed. Mimimal white cast? Sort of...you have to rub it in really well and once your skin starts to absorb it, it gets more glowy. But once you get it wet, the white cast comes back. We wore this to the park 3 different days and for backyard water table play in full sun for 2+ hours. Unfortunately there are 2 main problems I have with this sunscreen. First, the smell is horrendous. Tangerine + Vanilla? Yuck. It's a bad ice cream flavor. Then you add dirty, smelly little kids to the equation? It becomes hot garbage. In addition to using this on my 3 boys, I had to try it for myself. The smell lingered for over 6 hours because of the beeswax in the formula. The next issue I have is the sunscreen consistency. Because of the beeswax, it's so hard to spread and rub in. I put 1/4 tsp in my palms and rubbed to warm it up, then spent 3+ minutes smoothing it on. My boys (they're all under 5) didn't want to stand still and let me work this product into their skin. They're used to a much quicker application process. That was a huge drawback for us.
