Bomber!
I used this tarp shelter for the first time on a trip to summit Gannett Peak in the Wind River Range of WY. I pitched it in a meadow, on snow, and on an exposed rock platform. It is super easy to set up with the included pole straps and trekking poles. I weathered three severe thunderstorms on that trip with high winds, hail, lightning, and heavy rains. The winds were so strong at times I was sure the shelter walls would rip or the entire thing would fly away in a gust. In the end it stood strong and took it all in stride. I was seriously impressed and want to give mad props to MSR for a quality structure. It’s also super light and compact for the space it provides. I carried it solo and lived in a palace with a massive amount of floor space. This is a winner.
Simple, light and easy to set up
Light weight, effective in snow and wind. Would recommend using MSR adjustable pole and 1 person Universal Footprint.
Blizzard camping win
Had a great first night in it with many exciting adventures to come! It made it through over a foot of snow that night and 15-30 mph of wind!
Light and fast
Had a great night of sleep in it after a 15k hike. was snowy and -8c with low wind. Held up well. I suggest buying larger tent peg for snowy condition.
Excellent lightweight tent
The MSR Front Range 4 Person Ultralight Tarp Shelter is excellent for your lightweight hiker that is looking to bring multiple guests or his family. The footprint is easily able to accommodate three people with gear or four with careful packaging. The material seems to be durable and should last a lifetime with care. Since I do not use trekking poles, I purchase the recommended pole with adjustable length; perfect fit. I would recommend purchasing some lightweight line as the stakes do not come with pulls.
Not ideal for three ond definitely not four
Bought for use with two adults and a teenager. We were able to make it work by pushing the hiking pole off center to accompany the mats, but this tent really is for two people or for two people and maybe a dog. You'd be very hard pressed to fit anything but four slim mats in here. I loved that the mesh came all the way down. We were able to leave the rain fly off for a few nights and we had great visibility. It was a pain to strap the poles together and it seems like the rubber straps would be prone to failure over time. Pockets were useful. Obviously you can't hang a lantern unless you figure out how to do it off your pole. The edges sag quite a bit more than my other hiking pole tents so it's hard to make use of the space and the person on the end is covered in netting and can't really sit up. We will probably return it, but haven't quite decided.
Frustrated
I bought this expensive tarp and the stakes came without that little utility cord to take them out of the ground. I had to use anyway as I didn’t have another option and it took me a long time to take them out. I still can’t understand why MSR is saving some cents in a $400 Tarp not including those cords in the stakes…
Great ski-tour shelter for a small group
Love this shelter! Replacing my Twin Sisters with something with a little more room and I'm very satisfied. Lightweight, easy setup, and functionally spacious. If needed, we could fit 4 people plus gear in here for the duration of our touring trip, but with only three, we are much more comfortable and have all the room we need.
Outstanding group shelter
Makes an excellent light weight communal cook shelter in alpine/tundra environments. I was very impressed with how well it withstood extended periods of high wind and rain on exposed terrain. Super easy to set up with a pair of trekking poles using the straps provided.
Great lightweight, super-versatile shelter.
So far a big fan of this flexible, easy to pitch multi-use shelter. Included straps for trekking poles are terrific.
