I want to start out this review by saying that I am really excited that the major backpack companies have started working on full featured "ultralight" bags. I have been looking for a lighter backpack for a while as I have replaced all my other backpacking gear with ultralight gear, and a lot of the smaller brands don't make women's specific bags or bags to fit short people. I also personally think that better organization and lumbar support is worth the 6-8 ounce weight penalty when compared to a lot of the smaller utralight gear company offerings. I like that this bag has legitimate lumbar support and a frame that keeps the bottom of the bag from rubbing against my lower back/upper butt. The dual pocket brain, while standard on heavier bags, is not often found on ultralight bags so that's also a big plus. Unfortunately, I don't think this bag distributes weight well. When packed with 23-25 pounds, it feels like the center of mass is too far away from my back, which feels as though I am being pulled backwards. I wonder if this is possibly a feature specific to the XS size. I did a side by side comparison of this bag with an XS Hyperlite Mountain Gear Southwest 2400, both totaling 23 pounds of weight, and the HMG bag had a far better weight distribution, to the point that it actually felt as though the HMG bag was at least a few pounds lighter than the Gregory. I think maybe if the bag were taller but less deep, or if there was less curvature in the frame that allows for back ventilation it might solve this problem. So while I like the features of the bag, unfortunately it doesn't work for me.
Very roomy 45L pack. I put the weight measurements in the questions section below. Pack weighed approximately 2.3# with the flap. I took this on a 4 day trip with a bear cannister (bear boxer) and had plenty of room for all of my things. The main portion and front mesh pocket is very roomy. The side pockets are large, stretchy and I was able to reach back and retrieve my water bottle easily. The hip belt pockets are decent, but did not easily fit my pixel 6 (very tight fit). I'd say the compression straps work well, but take a little getting used to if you're used to quickly snapping then tightening your straps Overall, it's not the lightest pack on the market, but it's a good in-between with a lot of the features of a non UL pack. Ultimately I returned it because the straps sit on my shoulders awkwardly and no matter how much I adjust it, it did not sit right. Nice pack, but not for me. I would recommend others to try it if interested.
I brought my gf and young daughter into REI last year to get them fitted for packs. We were looking for something in the 40 liter range, as they are both petite, and I wanted to keep their maximum carrying weight at 20lbs or less. They both preferred the fit of Gregory packs and we settled on Jade 38s. After a few trips, they both loved the packs, especially the trampoline suspension system, but had 2 complaints. There were no bottom straps to hold their foam sit/sleep pads, and they couldn’t reach their water bottles while wearing the pack. Another slight issue was the XS Jade 38 was only a 35 liter pack. It wasn’t quite big enough for them to carry gear needed for trips that lasted longer than 3 days. I decided to look for another pack that resolved their complaints, and offered a little more space. I discovered the Facet 45 at REI’s online store. It offered the same suspension system, but it doesn’t have the velcro adjustment. They both have torsos between 15” and 16”, so I ordered 2 XS Facet 45 packs in hopes the packs would fit them as well as the Jade. We went to REI when they came in, and luckily, both of them loved the packs. The XS Facet 45 has a 42 liter capacity. They were both excited about the 7 liters of extra space. The Facet also came in a few ounces lighter than the smaller Jade. They even liked the gray and red color scheme. We made the exchange and have done a couple of hikes with them. My gf has put about 20 miles in with her pack and says it fits her more comfortably than the Jade did. She has not experienced bruising on her shoulder (she received bruises on her right clavicle while wearing the Jade). They are both able to reach their water bottles without help now and can strap their pads to the bottom. The only complaint is it’s a bit of a pain to fit the rolled up pads into the bottom straps. It would have been great if Gregory had put buckles on the straps like my Baltoro has. It’s only a minor inconvenience though. The only question that remains is the pack’s durability. The side is made of a thinner nylon than the Jade. I will provide an update in a year or so when we’ve put a few more trips into the woods with them and see how they hold up.
I feel like this pack is a mixed bag. The back ventilation is great. It's really roomy and easy to access the side pockets while walking. The straps are well cushioned, however they don't sit right on my chest. I struggled to get the correct torso length, while making the bag feel secure. I wound up having to tie the remainder of the adjustment straps under my breasts for additional stability, which made it a hassle to take the bag on and off. Also the waist/hip strap needs more adjustability - I had it at it's smallest and it again, it wasn't quite secure. And while I love the pockets on the waist strap, they just need to be a touch larger to comfortably fit most phones.
This bag is a terrific combo of features, size and weight. I’ve had bigger, fancier Gregory packs, but as my experience and needs have changed, I eventually opted for a lighter pack. I get the Focal/Facet is Greg’s answer to Osprey’s Exo/Eja. But the capacity is better and it fits like a glove.(Which is weird for a backpack.) A smidge over 2.5 for a medium, I can fit my bv475 easily on its side. The straps work with my body, I actually found them to be more comfortable than the fully-featured Kalmia I had last. I appreciate the bladder system compatibility with my Swift day pack. The storm flap is nice because I keep going back and forth with the brain, a feature I value having the option to use, as it’s the first thing to go on Ul packs. Only cons are: if I overload it, the frame can squeak. I wish the sternum strap went higher up. I have an 18” torso on a 5’6” frame and I have a medium, but could have fit a small. I’ve taken this for week long trips all over the Northeast and I intend to take it on the AT. This isn’t the bag for brand-obsessed trendy hikers, but if you’re looking for a durable, lightweight pack with an airy, framed suspension, this is it.
This is a fabulous lightweight streamlined a nd incredibly comfortable backpack. I am 5'5" with a S torso and I am using the Small Womens pack. The hip pockets fit my cell phone and sunglasses, small knife and lip screen. The side water bottle holders work! I can comfortably slide my bottles in them and secure them in the vertical position.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great sturdy pack! Comfortable to carry - true fit. Plenty of pockets to stay organized, especially with the hip belt pockets! The mesh side pockets are large enough to hold two water bottles in one pocket if needed. The bladder is great. I put it in the hydration pocket and fed the hose through to my front and put the magnet on the opposite pack strap, it worked perfectly. I dislike the adjustable loops on the bottom of the pack to hold your tent or sleeping pad. It was difficult to push my tent through the loops, it would make more sense to have buckles on the loops to easily open and adjust them. It's also hard to adjust them since they feed through to where the water bottle mesh pockets are so you would need to remove your water bottles to adjust while on the trail. I also dislike the extra opening on the mesh water bottle pockets. If I am packing light I usually only take one pocket for an extra water bottle and the other pocket to store things I want to access easily while I am walking like my phone, snacks, camera, etc - things that are too big for the hip belt pockets. Some things would stay in the pack but when I took it off and set it down they would fall out of that extra hole. I know some people prefer this style of pocket so maybe it could be an option when choosing your pack?
I purchased this pack as a lightweight and smaller option for weekend trips. I have the diva 60 and love it for bigger trips with a heavier pack. So far I have used my facet 45 on a 3-day hike in the Grand Canyon. I absolutely love it! I think I will be using this much more than my bigger pack for weekend trips! My load only ended up being about 25 lb but it felt like I was carrying nothing! I love that the hip belt is long enough to wrap all the way around my hips. This may be an issue for smaller hikers. I am 5'10 and weigh 125 lb. With a loaded pack the hip belt was as tight as it goes but I was able to get it just as tight as I needed! Any smaller and I'd have a hard time getting it as tight as I want. I was also surprised how tall the medium was for me! I have a hard time getting packs that are tall enough since I have a long torso. This pack fit me perfectly! I had enough room up above to use the shoulder straps to take some weight off of my shoulders. This pack seems to be the perfect balance between comfort and lightweight! I love the springy trampoline feel around my back. I hike a lot in the desert so having air flow between my back and my pack is important to me. The pack had just enough pockets to keep me organized. I love that a water bottle can slide into the side pockets and be accessed easily while walking. The material seems high quality and it seems like it will last me for many years of hiking! Highly recommend!
