A must have
Love it, and storm tested. The perfect addition to my Wonderland 6. We use it as a lounge for bad weather conditions.
Must have addition for the Wonderland Tent
This honestly should be a standard addition to the wonderland tent since they removed the vestibule all together. Clearly a corporate move to force people to spend more money but whatever, congrats you got me REI. It offers a lot of space to keep gear in the shade and out of the rain, with out having to drag it in to the tent. I can set two camping chairs and table in there comfortably. My only issue with it is when you want the side open, they forgot to add a pin/loop for rolling the flap up at the bottom, so it just hangs.
Great, not perfect addition
I bought this after camping with the Wonderland tent once. It did not disappoint. The instructions are on the inside of the bag and are easy to follow. I had a little trouble setting it up as i hadn't tried it ahead of time and it was getting dark. One person can set it up, but two would make it a snap. I had 2 chairs and a small table set up underneath and there was plenty of room. It's not as high as the tent, so if you're taller, you will have to crouch while moving around. There was a wonderful thunderstorm and it held up like a champ. I admit that I was worried, but there were zero leaks and everything stayed dry, including me. It was a great place to sit and watch the storm without feeling like I was "trapped" in my tent. I left gear under it overnight and everything was dry the next morning. Being able to attach this to either end of the tent is a nice feature. I agree with some of the other reviews that this should be a standard piece with the tent. By including with the tent, campers would still have the option of buying a second one once they realize how much it adds to the tent. I bought this originally to provide additional shade. It has plenty of ventilation and protects from the elements. If you've bought or are planning on buying the Wonderland tent, I encourage you to get at least one mudroom.
Good, not great, and nearly mandatory for the tent
This is a cool add on. I think it’s nearly mandatory to make the Wonderland fully functional since that tent has no connected vestibule at all. The old Kingdom mudroom design was better with zipper side doors. Opening the sides on this one is a bit of a hassle as you need to pull it off the bottom pole connection. It’s workable, but not great. Why did they change this??? It can’t be that big of savings. I got this for 40% off one day sale for members and it seems fair at that price. I think the Kingdom 6 tent works best with two mudrooms , one on each end. But certainly not mandatory.
Perfect vestibule to keep your gear protected!
Bought the Wonderland Mudroom to go along with the Wonderland 4 tent. This mudroom came in so handy. Every dollar spent was worth it. I kept my backpacks, muddy boots, and even some of our nicer camp gear in here during the day, so it wouldn't be left out at the campsite while we hiked. The mudroom did great; the one night it poured, it kept all of our items dry without having to shove everything in the car. I used it mostly for coverage, but you can also prop it up with poles and use it for a nice place to sit during a rainstorm as well. While it is not necessary to have with your Wonderland tent, I don't regret purchasing this at all!
Has some issues
Pros: 1. Adds a good amount of rain shelter area 2. Hooks nicely onto the tent itself 3. Relatively easy setup Cons: 1. The zipper is miserable. It's like they went out of their way to make it as difficult as possible to zip open or closed from the inside, with how the velcro flap constantly gets in the way. 2. Nothing holds the overhead portion taut and it easily sags. Annoying to be constantly brushing against my head even while crouching down. Also it tends to collect large pools of water while it rains. Overall it's okay for what it is, though it feels overpriced given the Cons. The annoyances get in the way every single time you pass through and are hard to look past entirely.
Versatile Extra Space But Design Flaws
The Wonderland Mud Room adds lots of usable space to the Wonderland tent but there are some flaws to it's design. Pros: The mud room can be attached to either side of the Wonderland tent given the tent's symmetrical design. You can even add a mud room on both ends for maximum user space. Even though the mud room does not zip onto the tent, it designed to not let any water leak into the mud room area as it sufficiently overlaps the tent and underneath the tent fly. It is also versatile in how it can be used - we used with the sides closed and the main entrance propped up in an awning configuration (see picture). Cons: The mud room comes with its own tent pole that is secured at the bottom into a tape seam which runs across the main front area. Given the tension of the tent pole, this causes the tape seam to sit above the ground which is a tripping hazard. Our toddler consistently tipped on it. We had to use some firewood sitting on the tape seam to keep it down on the ground (pictured). The height of the mud room slopes down towards the main entrance to about 4 feet. This causes you to hunch down to take a few steps into or out of the mud room - a bit of a hassle. When it rains like it did for our camping trip, water will pool on the awning which we kept up for additional dry area during the rain. (The poles are purchased separately.) We did not keep the mud room as we will return the tent too due to its own major issues.
Great addition to the Wonderland 4
Spacious, welcome add-n to the Wonderland 4 tent. Great in the rain, (3 nights of, so far), and roomy enough for storage + a couple of chairs for partners sipping coffee while the rain passes through...gave it a 4 rather than a 5 only because we have yet to figure out how to attach it to the tent without creating a gap (vent?) where the mud room connects to the front (actually, you can connect it to either end - another benefit). Not a problem with hard, vertical rain (we had), but unsure about more horizontal, wind driven precipitation.
Nice little additional "indoor" sitting area
It may have just been an issue with the one I bought, but I had to take a knife and cut a few stitches tlon this to get it to actually work. The hole where the loop in the Wonderland is supposed to go through just wasn't large enough for the grommet to go through without cutting a little of the backstitch. Once that was done, it goes up and on very easy. The toggles could be a little larger as I had issues with one about halfway down on a side that kept popping out, but once the pole was in and I could stake it out, the pressure on them seemed to help keep them in place.
The flaws are pretty simple to solve
The biggest thing people seem to run into, and something that bothered me the first time I used, is the strap at the front entrance. I caught this with my foot several times. The simplest way to fix this IMO is to just use a smaller tent's footprint or a small tarp and stake it so it covers the strap. This will also probably help with moisture/humidity getting trapped inside from the ground being damp. You could also just throw a heavier outdoor rug over the strap and reduce the tripping hazard even more. Further benefit is that you'll have a clean floor that's easy to clean out and really take advantage of what a mudroom is supposed to be: a place that's easy to clean and change in/out of dirty and wet clothes without tracking the mess into the living space. Anyways, this is so easy to make a non-issue that I can't really fault it too much. Of course the other problem I had, how low the front entrance is, is solved by just using the side as an entrance. I'm not actually sure that was in the product photos when I bought it so I literally didn't know I could do this until I decided to write this review. Just that alone made my review a solid 4 rather than a 3.5. This is an issue I've had with all REI Co-op gear I've bought just because there's never an explanation or more detailed product manual for how all of the features are intended to be used and I typically figure it out in the field and wind up needing to buy more stakes/guy lines just to actually utilize. Maybe it is in the instructions or I should just use my gear more often. What I REALLY like about this is that it's not integrated into the tent. For one, if you are on a budget, you can just buy the tent. This is completely a comfort item and absolutely not necessary to purchase. The other benefit to this is that if you just want to quickly set up the tent, you don't have to complicate the setup by also having to setup a large vestibule. A single person can setup the Wonderland 4 (what I have) relatively quickly. It's basically a big heavy car tent that sets up pretty similar to a backpacking tent. Without going too much into the tent, the optional aspect of it is a big bonus in my eyes compared to other large tents that have these things fully integrated. Maybe those are optional as well and can roll up or something but having never used 'em, I can't say for sure. Still sounds like more hassle than just pulling it out of the carrying bag. I haven't tried but this is probably large enough to setup a smaller tent to expand sleeping space. Use it for the kids or friends that tag along while you're living in luxury inside the wonderland. The only thing I can't speak to is how well it holds up to weather. I've only used it in fair weather with light rain and wind at most. The sloped design should, at least hopefully, handle wind and rain. Not related to the mud room or tent: I wish REI allowed members to reply to reviews. I don't really agree that this deserves a 3 star review and marking things as "helpful" or "unhelpful" doesn't always cut it.
