The Black Diamond Spot 400 R headlamp is great for hiking trails, I’ve also used it for walking the dog around the city at night, and in one vehicle visibility situation. It’s functional design is compact, it’s easy to use, and also aesthetically pleasing. It’s rechargeable! There are multiple white + red light options, I really like the red light for safety, the strobe option (white and red) is a great feature. I used the headlamp for a drizzly hike, & I’m looking forward to trying it in rainy weather- it’s waterproof enough to be submersible. The head strap is comfortable, it adjusts easily, the reflective lettering on the strap is a plus. The ‘Bordeaux’ color is a really good looking brown. I’m a fan of this headlamp!
I was given the opportunity to review the Black Diamond 400 Lumen Spot R and I jumped at it. I’ve been wanting a rechargeable headlamp for quite some time. My wife and I have older versions of the Black Diamond headlamps and for the most part they are great. The only issues we’ve had is that we never used the full features because they were just too complicated. We were also getting tired of having to change out and charge the batteries along with packing enough extra batteries for both lights. The Spot R flashlight fixes all of my issues with the previous lights. For the first time in a long time I’ve been able to make sense of all of the settings on the light and I didn’t have to read through the instructions to figure it out. It is finally intuitive. The rechargeable internal battery is great as well and bonus it has a power indicator. The only thing I don’t like is that I’m really trying to convert all of my electronic connections to USB-C so I can carry less cables. Sadly they didn’t go that way. Instead the connection is micro usb. All in all, this is a great headlamp. Very bright and easy to use when you need it and very compact. I think this is going to be a great around camp light but also great for backpacking and running.
This is a great lamp - it's lightweight, comfortable, affordable, and the battery lasts a decently long time. However, I have now gone through two of these headlamps in the last 2.5 years, and both times the same mechanism has broken. It seems the adjustable mechanism is rather fragile and prone to snapping. Once it's broken, the headlamp just falls down and points towards the floor, rendering it practically useless. I will mention that Black Diamond has a 3-year warranty on headlamps, so I've been able to replace it but each of these headlamps has an expiration date... and you don't want it breaking on a camping trip, like it did with me!
I specifically bought this headlamp b/c of its rechargeability (& good reviews). Functionally, this headlamp works great. The multiple settings are nice and it is plenty bright. I have used it several times and have not needed to recharge it yet; so far, the battery life has exceeded my expectations. My only complaint is the color--I would not call it Bordeaux, as advertised--it's brown.
Strong light. The tiny blue LEDs on the side are helpful to know how much (rechargeable) battery is left. Please note that this uses a USB-B Micro (it ships with a 6 inch long one) instead of the newer USB-C, so go find those old cables you though you were done with.
I'm liking this headlamp a lot so far. I really like the dimming feature to fine tune the brightness. Still learning all the functions but I'll be using this for years to come. My only complaint so far - WHY do companies keep using proprietary USB charging cords? This would be a five star product except for this issue. USB-A is on the way out and the headlamp plug-in portion is some other funky type. Why don't you switch to USB-C like the rest of the world? I can't use the USB-C cord I use with all my other hiking electronics and have to make sure I carry around this unique headlamp charging cord.
I bought one. It had issues flickering between power levels randomly. So from low light to incredibly bright. Background, the light has 3 or 4 light modes: one is the spotlight, one is diffuse, etc. For the first two, you can hold down the button to gradually increase or decrease the brightness. Anyways, exchanged the first one for another one with the understanding that it was defective. New one same thing. I decrease the light to lowest threshold, but it was randomly jumpy up to ultra bright. Generally caused by motion, but not when I touch the button. Wish I had simply burned through a $30 headlight rather than drop $70 on this one.
This headlamp is good, but that's frustrating because it could be great. 1st issue: Clearly inefficient charging circuitry. The headlamp gets very warm when charging. If you're in the backcountry charging from a battery bank this is not great. 2nd issue: Relatively slow charging. This probably comes back to cheaper charging circuitry. 3rd issue: USB-B micro port. Almost everything in the world is becoming standardized around USB-C and carrying a single cable would be nice. It's not a bad headlamp, but would be a solid 6 stars had they just gone the extra mile with the circuit board.
This sounded like a great light. But I was disappointed in it. The white light is ok. But I mostly use the red light. I live on a farm, and have a lot of chores at night. Animals and birds are not agitated by red light. And it does not take away my night vision either. I have purchased a number of white/ red lights over the last 15 or so years since they have been popular. Improvements have been made, they are rechargeable, run times are longer, and lumens have increased. But the red light on this headlight is so difficult to see anything with it is mostly useless, it does not shine very far in front of me, and is not very bright even up close. Lights I bought years ago outshine it. I will not buy one of these again.
I have the regular spot with dual fuel battery. that headlamp was nearly perfect- great light modes with dimmable red and white and separate buttons. All I wanted was a pure usb rechargeable version without having to use a separate charger. I thought my wish had been answered with the spot-r until I started using this and the white light brightness started randomly changing on me whenever I tried to touch this thing. You see they made the perplexing decision to add a touch activated button on the side that will ramp up the white light brightness to max and blind you and people around you if you hand accidentally brush against the wrong spot on the side trying to adjust it, which is pretty much every time. Who asked for this feature? I had previously returned the big brother of this the storm-r for the same reason where it had that horrible touch feature where you accidentally blind yourself. why would anyone want brightness to be adjusted by capacitve touch on the body when you have actual tactile button for that you can press for that? all this does is change the brightness when you don't want it to and drive you insane. what on earth were they thinking adding this? unfortunately the lamp would be great otherwise I wish there was a way to disable this feature. The regular version did not have this so guess I am stuck with that for now.
