Black Diamond Trekking Poles

I know Black Diamond trekking poles are primarily used for hiking, but I use them for support with balance issues I have. For this purpose they are perfect. In one of my physical therapy sessions some years ago, the therapist suggested using hiking poles instead of a cane. She showed balance was much better maintained with poles. I started using a beautiful carved wooden hiking stick I already owned, but it was difficult to safely store when out in public, like at restaurants and such. I needed something that folded up. I read up on reviews and Black Diamond became the perfect choice. I just purchased my second set. With my constant daily use of my first set, a bugee cord tore on one of my two original sticks. I had used it for over five years and I had found it perfect. I was very happy with Black Diamond, so I had to purchase two more. I keep a stick in my car and one in my wife's car and one in the house. When we go out and stop somewhere, the folded stick is so small in fits in my wife's purse. When people see my stick, like at doctors' offices for example, they ask where i bought it and I tell them that I purchased it at REI. I also always relate its usefulness. They almost always say they are going to check them out. I believe Black Diamond does not know the versatility of this product outside its intented use. I am really very happy I found such a great tool.

Beware of Buying These

Beware of buying these. I have not used them yet on any trails as these are brand new. However, the low profile basket that comes attached to these is impossible to get off without causing any actual damage to the basket. At first I thought this was simply a user error on my end. I took them back into REI for assistance. They also could not unscrew the smaller basket from the tip. They informed me that they have seen this same defect with a lot of these products from customers. Not only is the smaller basket impossible to get off, but the larger basket that is provided has terrible threading on it. It looks melted or stripped away. The workers at REI told me that even if I ripped the smaller baskets off and broke them, the larger baskets wouldn't even hold up on trail with the poor threading. I was instructed to email Black Diamond and wait for their response to the issue. The product is very lightweight, very comfortable, and very easy to assemble and break down. Quite unfortunate that they have a major design issue with the baskets/threads. Also let it be known, that this is not just an issue with one of the poles, this is an issue with both poles in the set. They both are not able to have the smaller basket removed and both larger baskets have issues with the threading.

Faulty clicks

I have been using Black Diamond Trekking Poles since I started hiking 10 years ago and I used to love them .. Light weight, sturdy and reliable. However very disappointed that the quality has been going down substantially. I bought these poles in July and did not start using them until mid August. After 6-7 hikes both poles broke ... one with the click button popped out and the other click no longer coming out.

Bad design and equally bad service.

The sticks are problematic in at least 2 factors. The tendons in warm or hot weather stretch allowing the sections to come apart which can be an issue on a tricky trail. The second factor is the release mechanism..the first time I tried to break down the sticks for travel the locking mechanism broke and fell out of the pole rendering them unusable. Neither REI nor Black Diamond were willing to replace the poles, REI because it was a year and a month after my husband bought them and Black Diamond refused to accept the receipt photo I sent with date and cost. I would return at your earliest opportunity.

Just great, Really!

I brought these to Ireland for a hiking vacation and they became an extension of my arms. I was barely aware that I was using them until they did their thing, to stabilize me on uneven terrain. I also love the upper body work they provided. My gait was even and steady in all conditions.

My favorite piece of gear

I've been using these for about five years. They were just stolen with my car. I'm more disappointed about losing these than my car. I have abused these in every possible way and they just kept on going. I even stabbed them into the side of a too steep hill and and walked on them and they did not fail. I've used them to whip out nettles and briars and I don't even know what else and they still kept going. They are super light. Every time I use other poles I am massively disappointed (I need longer ones when I carry a hiking pole tent). Of all the hiking gear I own this is what I was most attached to. May they come home safely.

Weak push button lock

I got the aluminum version of the Z poles for the promise of increased durability. Unfortunately, this Black Diamond version seems to have a critical defect: the push button lock broke off on me after collapsing the pole soon after purchasing. Since I use a single pole while trail running, I switched to the remaining good pole, and a few weeks later that pole's push button broke off too in the exact same way. When I looked into it in more detail, it appears the button is made of a long—but razor thin—piece of metal, half of which is hidden inside the tube. It appears after only 30-40 presses, it gives out. Black Diamond sent me a replacement pair without question, but I am not optimistic it will last any longer. It's a shame because they really should be more durable.

Detent button fails, otherwise nice.

People are not kidding about the lock button failing. I used mine perhaps 10 times over the course of a year. At the end of a hike, the detent button broke in half and sailed off into the parking lot. I retrieved the piece, and it had snapped in the middle of the material - so it's not like it could just be put back into place, the part was completely broken. If you look at the pics in the review titled "Faulty clicks", it's *exactly* the same thing I saw. When these poles are working, they're pretty good. Reasonably solid, grips are good, I like the strap adjustment mechanism.

For the long haul...

Used the same pair of BD distance Z poles for a few years now, winter and summer, for training and ultra races. Very reliable, durable, easy to use and carry. I consider this product an essential piece of training equipment.

Reliable for years

My mom and I both have a pair each and we depend on them heavily due to bad knees and ankles. We have used them to hike all over the world and their foldable and light weight nature makes them easily portable. After five years they are still in great condition, no dents or bends. They do get stuck in mud or sometimes bushes and then can unsync from each other but otherwise they are one of the best cost per use items we have ever spent our money on.

Good product- sizing chart's are misleading

Bought these for Ultra trail running. I borrowed a pair from a friend during a pacing event and saw the benefits of having them on climbs, descents and late in the race. Here's the gotcha on the 4 star rating - the sizing chart's do not match; online vs. packaging. 110cm size is for a person 5'1"- 5'4" . I 'm 5'6" and should have the 120 based on the arm bend diagram and height chart. TEI & Black Diamond should make an update. Hope to swap before an event this weekend.
