Single Wall Rim - Spoke End Caused Flat
For the price, the wheel is fine - just slightly out of true, and the hub is fine; however, the spoke end that protrudes thru the single wheel rim caused a flat, within a few minutes of neighborhood riding. I used cotton 22mm rim tape - that was not enough. If you buy, suggest looking at the spoke ends, possibly may need to grind the end of the spoke; and/or add a couple of layers of tape directly to the rim over the spoke ends (e.g., duct tape, electrical tape).
Does not match Evo website exactly but good deal
This wheel does not match the specifications on the Evo website. This may be why it’s less expensive. Here are differences: 1. It says built by The Wheel Shop in North America, but the Evo website says it builds its wheels in Canada. 2. The nipples are hopefully stainless steel and not chrome, but they definitely aren’t brass, which is what Evo’s website specifies 3. The hub says QUANDO on it and is black. I can’t tell what it’s made out of. The Evo website says the hub is alloy. The rim is very similar to Weinmann with a pitched inside surface and a deep canyon for the nipples. You will need to continually, evenly push the rim tape into the canyon to properly cover the nipples. The skewer seems to be good with pronounced camming action for solid attachment to the fork. The wheel I got is true. It is almost exactly 1” outside width. My old Mavic rim was 0.9” so I needed to add slack to the cable that joins the two brake levers. The wall seems thin, so I’m a little worried about how long it will last in the Oregon rainy, dirty commute weather. I will try to clean the rims after my rides. All in all I’m pretty stoked with this wheel. My plan is buy some more premium parts to build a new wheel around my Deore XT alloy hub, but this could take years. In the meantime I’m optimistic about this Evo wheel.
I bought one of these a couple of years ago and have used it mostly on city streets, and then one day the rim just cracked. I know nothing lasts forever, but a couple of years seems like a rather short lifespan to me.
size matters
These are made for 1.5-2.25” tires, but you’ll get small pinch flat types of holes if you go to the larger end of that scale. Strong wheel that holds up to my tour, no broken spokes yet! They didn’t arrive true, and don’t include rim tape. You’ll want to address both of those before installing them.
