Best Value All Purpose Axe
I wanted an all in one axe, that could do everything. This axe is the best axe I could find to achieve this goal, and it works great: I’ve had it a couple months and have chopped a lot of wood, nearly every day. It came with a nice sheathe, which I appreciated. I was sad that the grain orientation was not ‘perfect’ but have not had any issues yet. I love this axe and recommend the brand / line of axes for a wood handle option. I also liked that I was able to buy it from REI.
Great axe
With any product you may come across a dud every once in a while. Folks are probably more likely to leave a negative review in those cases. My axe is not a dud so I figured I would chime in. I have used this camping with my family and have put it through its paces. It’s not a splitting axe but it will do in a pinch. On our last trip I split several rounds for the campfire as my splitter was back at home. It is a tough axe and holds its edge in normal use. I stupidly split against a rock and rolled the edge. It sharpened easily with a handheld sharpener I had in my pack. Agdor is a more affordable way to get into a Swedish Hults Bruk axe. If you’re on the fence buy one and use it.
The best value general/felling axe on the market
I did a lot of research to pickup a new axe for felling small trees and precision splitting and this is the best quality and price point on the market, period. I've used it to complement a splitting maul and I feel like a samurai with the unique Montreal head shape. I use it largely with smaller wedge sections of evergreen softwood (cedar and pine) with some hardwood oak and madrone. I did the whole trendy adornment thing myself since Best Made Co. is no longer around. I'm bummed I didn't get mine directly from REI now that Hults Bruk and the Agdor brand are sold but I highly recommend this axe for craftsmanship and value. This axe is not intended to be a splitting axe or a maul--so don't expect it to perform that way. The high quality leather sheath is stellar and I've been able to teach safety and technique to my kids with this axe in the Sierras. I've gone through about 20 rounds of ponderosa pine and the label is eviscerated. I've also used my Arkansas soft/hard stone to keep the blade sharp because "a sharp axe is a safe axe." I expect to have this axe for decades with proper care and don't see any performance issues when used properly as a general axe or small tree felling axe.
Blade broke on 3rd swing
I took this axe out of the box, and sharpened it by hand with a file, and stone. I put an oak split on a chopping block to make smaller splits. First 2 swings went just fine. On the 3rd swing, the tip of the blade broke off into the log.
Great product!
Great ax, well made. Feels good to the hand. Only thing is coating the wood to smooth it out.
