Been waiting for these, YASS!
I’ve had great experiences with Wahoo products in general so when I learned they were working on a power pedal I was excited. Pedal based power makes sense for a lot of reasons, but the main for me is easy to use on a variety of bikes. Wahoo doesn’t disappoint. These were easy to install, and set up. Price is on par with other L/R crank based power systems. I have no regrets about this purchase.
Dual sided Speedplay powermeter pedals!
These powermeter pedals were slated for release last June but were delayed by supply chain issues but were well worth the wait! Dual sided power measuring with L/R balance! With a full charge then 100 miles+ in they are still almost fully charged(75 hr per charge)! Just screw them in, connect to your computer & go!
Recommended without hesitation
I’ve been a Speedplay user for over 10 years but the lack of a power meter option was a continuing disappointment, until Wahoo acquired Speedplay and announced they were working on filling that gap. When the pedals finally hit the market (albeit a year later than first announced), I was put off by the price despite the rave reviews from the experts like DCRainmaker and GPLama. That changed when the annual email arrived from REI with a 20% member discount code. With that and my annual dividend, the price came down to something a bit more palatable. So I took the plunge and have not been disappointed in the least. I have all the necessary tools so installation was a breeze. (Just remember to put your chain onto the big ring up front to avoid injury — I speak from previous painful experience!). I already had the cleats on my shoes so no need to do anything there. To the uninitiated cleat installation looks complicated first time around but if you follow the written instructions and/or watch videos on YouTube, it’s pretty straightforward. If in doubt ask for help from a bike shop. The only thing I had to check was that there was enough clearance between the sole/cleat on my shoes and the pod on the pedals. In my case there is plenty, so I didn’t need to install the additional shims on my shoes. After a few sprints as recommended by Wahoo and the internet experts to bed them in, I was good to go. I could not be happier with their performance. I have been able to test them against a Stages Gen 3 left crank arm power meter that I also have (using a great ConnectIQ data field called ANT+ Power Meter by developer takura87, which will pull power data from a meter that isn’t paired with my bike computer and write it into the fit file so it displays in Garmin Connect) and they appear to track very closely in any kind of riding — steady state, sprints and climbs. I don’t have the ability to confirm Wahoo’s +/- 1% accuracy claim, but all the internet reviewers have confirmed it. Getting used to clipping in and out can take some time if you have come from another pedal system, but after 10 years it’s second nature to me. My only slight qualm is with the iOS Wahoo app. Beyond the initial set up, you really don’t need it as everything you need to do, such as a Zero Reset, can be done by your bike computer, but I do like to use it once in a while to check for firmware updates etc (there haven’t been any). Occasionally it will not see the right pedal as connected. The protocol is that the right connects to the left and the left does all the heavy lifting transmitting the final data via ANT+ or Bluetooth. When it doesn’t connect, I’ve had to do the usual trouble-shooting such as disabling and re-enabling BT, unpairing and repairing the pedals, force-quitting the app etc. It may be a Bluetooth issue as the pedals connect with my bike computers via ANT+ every time without issue. I haven’t tried uninstalling and re-installing the app so that will be the next step if the issue persists. Bottom line: these are great power meter pedals and I have no hesitation recommending them.
What's not to like?
Everything worked perfectly. The cleat installation process is a bit more involved than other brands, but it's super easy if you follow the instructions. Clipping in and out was a bit different from my SPD-SL, but that's just a bit of a learning curve. At the end of my first 20 mile ride with only a few stops at lights, I had it down. The pedals paired to my Garmin Edge 830 without any problems. Just make sure you pair it to your phone before you attempt to pair it with Garmin. The only issue I had was that the iPhone app initially crashed when pairing. The support page suggests restarting your phone, which solved the issue. As far as accuracy, I don't really have anything to compare with, but they're giving me the numbers I was expecting and the feedback is instant (or you can choose various levels of smoothing on your head unit). Simply put: They do what they're expected to do.
Cumbersome set up, cumbersome customer support
I could never get these pedals to connect, even to the wahoo app. They paired, but connection always failed. I was only able to calibrate one of the two pedals. It was a total no go with my Garmin device. You can't speak with a person live at Wahoo for help. Instead it is a slow, cumbersome email exchange where they tell you to do what you already tried. Can you tell I'm frustrated? I have $1K set of Inert pedals. Go with something else unless you have a Midas touch with tech.
Worked perfectly
Worked perfectly right out of the box. If you have more than one bike, power pedals are the way to go as they are easy to transfer from one bike to another.
Great pedals
These pedals are great. Synced easily with my Garmin computer. Lots of great data!
Finally!
These came quick & are as expected. They perform great!
Easy to use
Easy to set up, accurate, and long lasting battery. Prefer pedals over cranks for transferability.
