Black Diamond Factor Hoody Review (Black, S)

I am genuinely impressed with the Black Diamond Factor Hoody. It's noticeably thicker than the Coefficient Hoodie, yet it remains surprisingly lightweight with a good amount of stretch, making it both comfortable and functional. One of the standout features for me is the logo on the chest; it's stylish and adds a nice touch to the overall design. I've used this hoody as a mid-layer under my Black Diamond Access Hoody as well as under my Recon Insulated Jacket, and in both scenarios, it performed flawlessly, providing the perfect balance of warmth and breathability. Overall, it's a great jacket for layering, offering both style and performance. Highly recommended!

Nice mid layer, wrong color shown for black/port

I just got this in black/port. The picture shows this color quite clearly as a brown. But when I received it, I thought there was a mixup. The black/port is, if anything, dark purple. (I get it "port" is purple. But the photo is not even close) Either the photographer really screwed up the color balance or there is some kind of other mixup going on with this color option. I'm not in love with the color, but can't return it. Get it together BD!! Otherwise, as a garmet, it's good. Fit is nice (medium on 165lb, 6ft) and slim. Could be a bit more trim on the midsection to waist. Only wishes are hidden thumb loops and a waist cinch.

best fleece ever

Garment will shrink. I’m 5’6 145 athletic build, normally wear size small in jackets but the medium fits me perfectly. The med. was slightly big for me, but it shrank over several washes so it fits me perfectly now. It’s my favorite fleece I’ve ever owned. The hood acts as a beenie and can be worn underneath a helmet. I don’t see why you would ever need a lighter weight fleece than this. Any lighter like the R1 or black diamonds coefficient hoodie are too lightweight. The only use I see for a lighter weight fleece is on a summer camping trip on a cold morning. This factor hoodie is warm enough to actually keep you warm yet light enough to not overheat you when you get active.

Excellent technical fleece

I really like this jacket. It's a bit thicker than other mid layers that I own which works really well on the colder days in the backcountry. I like the hood because I'm not pulling a hat in and out of my pocket when transitioning from sun to shade, etc. It's also good to go running when it's 30 out, etc. Large fits a little loose on me I'm 6' 185 lbs. and fit

This fleece rocks! Super warm and stylish.

I love this fleece and am so glad I settled on it. It's super stylish, super warm, can stand light rain without getting soaked, lightweight, etc. I use it for backpacking, camping, work, running, etc. I wore this all over Iceland in late September and in sub-zero temps in California with a puffy and it is super cozy. I bought the green version and get compliments a lot on it. I spent a lot of time reading reviews of puffy jackets and fleeces and if you're like me you'll find a lot of nitpicking the little details but don't worry about them - if you're looking for a versatile fleece for chilly days, backpacking treks, or super cold days to layer with then you won't be disappointed when you get this.

Great layer

I really like this layer and it's similar to the R1 by Patagonia and some of the other companies who make a layer like this. I like to use this either as my base layer when touring or will throw a t-shirt underneath for colder days or when running in the winter around Salt Lake. The only reason I gave it a 9 is because while it is a trim fit, I find that the fit around the waist (I am 6'2" 190 w/a 33-34 waist and I ordered a Large) was a little wider than I would like and there is no option to cinch. Would definitely recommend this layer though.

Only one complaint

I have worn this for about everything now. I wear it to dinner, for warming up at the gym, climbed at Indian Creek in it, and wore it backcountry skiing multiple times. My only complaint is that it doesn't have thumb holes and I really prefer to have those skiing. Other than that, it layers well for skiing, keeps you warm enough for climbing without over-heating and is an all-around great jacket. I was even impressed by the cell phone pocket, toured all day in single digit weather and my phone stayed charged.

my favorite hoody, bought a 2nd

I bought a 2nd Factor Hoody after wearing my first one almost daily for a year. I wear this when backpacking, hiking, bummin' around town, skiing... it's the perfect mid-layer. Someone told me this is BD's version of the R1... I can see that, but I like these a little better. I like that they're somewhat form-fitting. zippers are quality. Hood is snug enough to fit underneath a ski or climbing helmet and will keep your noggin warm on cool nights. Slept in this a couple times too. What more can I say

Good but not great

My initial impressions of the fit were so-so. The upper body and hood were great but, as others have mentioned, it seems to have a lot of slop around the waist but no cinch cord. After a handful of uses, I just accepted the extra length and width and found it does lay fairly well when on. That's about it for negatives. The positives are: 1. slick outer face for layering. 2. very warm 3. functional pockets In general, I'm happy with the Factor hoody despite my initial concerns over fit.

Versatile

I wore this fleece backpacking in the snow, and rain, as well as hiking, camping, and climbing in Utah. It is extremely comfortable, keeps you very warm, and is very stylish. This has hands down been the most comfortable jacket I have owned, and it keeps you warm on that chilly morning and evening. Highly recommend purely for comfort and style not to mention the warmth and versatility, can easily be paired with a nice baselayer as well as a puffy or rain jacket for extra warmth.
