super light, lots of pockets, comfort belts
Truth be told, I have conflicting expectations for a pack in this size niche; wanting a pack as handy for bagging climbing shoes, harness and helmet to the crag as carring my Chromebook, down jacket, earphones and water bottle onto the plane. Because of this I've been in and out of numerous packs. Then I tried the Altvia 22L. I especially like the semi-rigid back panel which is corrugated to enable airflow and just stiff enough give the pack some spinal stature. The main compartment is plenty spacious, with a place for a bladder or to slip in your Surface, MacBook Air, etc. There's an opening for the bladder hose and an integrated hose clip on the chest strap. A second front pocket is plenty deep for a jacket, tools or sundries; and the two elastic mesh side pockets are strong enough and dep enough to accommodate a liter water bottle. The top pocket is great for your sunnies and your phone/wallet/keys; deep enough they won't accidentally fall out. I think the poster below me over reacted to the thinness of the straps and belt. When adjusted properly, they were perfectly comfortable for me both headed to the crag and flying cross country. FWIW: I moved the chest strap down to its bottom-most adjustment point and that made all the difference. Perhaps the other person didn't do that. For the money, I think this crafty day pack represents real value.
I bought the 2024 season pack and the 2025 season pack. The 2024 is great. Very comfortable on my back & durable. I am a woman's XL and torso length of 19". Perfect for hiking and as a personal item for flying. The only 2 downsides of the pack are that it slouches a bit on my back when it's packed, but all packs without a frame do that. I bought one without a frame so that I could pack it down if needed. Also, the hip belt juuuust fits me, but I have quite wide hips. It will fit most straight size people, but it is not for plus size people. The 2025 pack is very different, for reference. It has much shallower pockets and thinner, flimsy feeling fabric. That one got returned immediately.
I was shocked when I examined and tried on this pack I bought for day hiking—it was very uncomfortable. There’s no padding on the straps, back, and hip belt. My other Patagonia packs—Refugio 26L, Lightwire, and Scramble 35—have plenty of padding, making them comfortable to wear for long periods. You’ll quickly develop pack fatigue and chaffing if you wear this pack for more than an hour. I'm returning this pack and getting one with some padding.
The 22L backpack is perfect for day hikes. Has 3 compartments, 2 small, and a big one for raincoat or jacket. The water bottle pockets are slightly slanted, so it's easy to reach back for water while hiking. I ordered this pack in a small and medium because I wasn't sure which would fit better. I'm not a big person, 5'2". The small fits me perfectly! The waist belt with zippered pockets makes this small backpack the best I've tried. I've been looking for a smaller lightweight pack and this is definitely the best. Looks great too!
I wanted something light weight that would easily fit under an airplane seat. I was a little concerned about a previous review of the shoulder straps, but they were very comfortable, no issues. I really like the number of compartments, rain cover and hip belt pockets. Hiked several days with a full pack and it was quite comfortable.
The backpack is usually used for climbing mountains. It can be stuffed with clothes and food. The pockets on both sides can be used to put hiking poles. The details are very good. I like it very much.
