Camped twice in this amazing tent. Once in a rainstorm. Kept me completely dry. The setup video on the Sea to Summit site is awesome on how to pitch it properly and once you've watched it a few times, setup is super easy. Also, love the fact how packable it. And using the tent pole holder as light bar? That's a genius idea. Only grip is the ties for the fly door opening are not elastic like they are for tent doors.
Do NOT purchase this item. While the weight is PERFECT, and the ability to separate the parts for easy carry is so helpful, it’s materials are too delicate for backpacking and tear very easily. Just got back from my first backpacking trip using this tent. I set it up on a partially sandy/partially rocky shore and about an hour after setting the tent up I noticed there were small holes in all four corners - like little punctures and pulling/tearing marks. I immediately checked the ground underneath the tent but found nothing particularly sharp or poky that would cause the damage (nothing out of the norm for any tent sent up). I would have been totally screwed had it rained on my trip- water would have easily seeped in from all corners of the tent. Unfortunately this tent is not reliable.
This tent is all about adaptability. You can set it up without the rain fly, with the fly first to keep your tent dry or even just the rain fly to use it as a sun shade. Other great details are the pole bag can be used as a light bar, the fly can be semi-setup to enjoy the stars but be ready for a late-night rain. The vertical walls provide a lot of head room even with the smaller footprint. The only knock was my daughter tripped on the lower support lines and it came detached from the tent.
Took this on the first trip and we encounter some 20-30 MPH wind. Had extra guylines and ended up taking the tent down as I was afraid the whole thing was going to break. On the first night, it did keep me nice and cozy, but part of the door and by the head was flapping all night. On the second night, I ended up taking it down and staying with my friend. As I was taking it down part of the fabric that is stitched near the top zipper section started ripping. I contacted Sea To Summit to see if the door loops could be used as part of the extra guylines and this is what I got back. Unlike the guy-out points, the door loops are not aligned with the pole set of the tent. This means they will only add a small amount of wind stability. The Alto is not designed for use in high winds. Like other ultralight backpacking tents with near-vertical walls, it will only sustain a certain wind load before the tent pole set may sustain damage. An Alto should be guyed out in winds/wind gusts above 20 mph / 30kmh

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Good tent, but it tears very easily so be careful.
