Lost of confidence
After much back and forth decided to buy the outway platform. First time is a bit of a struggle to set-up but with the help of the support service manage to correctly installed the spoiler reinforcement through the hinge. The platform is steady and holds good to your car, have a BMW X1 for reference. Yesterday we started a road trip from UK to Spain, after 500kms the bike came loose and drop from the rack of the highway!!!!! Miracle there was not an accident, was driving at 100kms/ per hour. Front wheel is damage plus side of bike, luckily did not fall on derailleur side. The bike is just hold by the clamp, which does not go around the frame on my BMC Roadmachine. There is nothing else holding the bike on the rack, the straps for wheels are weak. Would never thought a Thule product to be so poorly design. How the bike can come loose? The clamp had been turned to the 2 clicks, have also bought the carbon frame protector. This is dangerous and surely Thule will blame it on user. Stay away from this product and will have to see about there customer service.
Perfect for mountain bikes
Bought this a few weeks back and very happy with the product. I recommend a second person for installation (mainly to hold the tailgate open slightly) and the rest is a breeze. The removable arms are crucial for attaching and locking your bikes securely no matter the shape of your frame. Feel sturdy and rides smooth on the back of the car. Recommend minor tightening after your first trip to make sure it is settled and secured. Highly recommend for those who don’t have a hitch and need a platform style rack. There is some movement in the platform when driving over bumps, but I feel this is intentional in the design to relieve pressure off the frame. Nothing concerning!
Paid full price. Received a broken, returned item
I paid full price. Box arrived damaged and taped shut. Previous purchaser left parts/manuals in a ziploc. The rack was partially assembled and one of the knobs was missing, probably the reason for the return. Extremely disappointed in REI, I feel scammed. This purchase was an enormous waste of everyone's time and makes me never want to order anything valuable from REI's website.
Great except for the bugs
Be aware that if you take this on any extended drive your bikes will be coated in a layer of bug slime. With the bikes sticking up as high as they do you will need to be prepared to thoroughly clean dead insects off every square inch of half of each bike. It's really gross and super annoying. We keep paper towels and cleaning fluid in the vehicle on long drives specifically for cleaning up this mess. We are experimenting with wrapping the frames in cling wrap but it's not possible to cover everything. We could get a bike cover but the fuel mileage would drop a lot due to drag. The only reason I didn't give less than three stars is because it's otherwise great.
Buyer Beware
Neither the installation video nor the description convey that the rack does NOT work if you have a water cage on the downtube. You must either remove the cage entirely or remove the upper screw and turn the cage 180 degrees down. Obviously only an inconvenience (although some possibility that the cage thread will get worn or, worse, misplace the screw), but misleading advertising, IMHO. Also, carrying 2 bikes does require some advance planning so that you properly position the longer of the 2 clamps. I didn't want a hitch or roof rack or the variety that hangs the bike. I've had better prior experiences with Thule.
Excellent bike rack.
Easy to use and secure. I’ve read the previous review and it’s apparent that the user did not know how to use the rack. The arms can attach in multiple places and are adjustable. I love this rack.
Checks the boxes
Probably the only trunk rack that has integrated locking (rack and bike), doesn't cover the license plate, doesn't interfere with parking sensors or backup camera, can open trunk with the rack on (albeit the trunk door becomes very heavy). Only complaint I have is that the installation process was time consuming for the first time, since the manual was slightly confusing about the bottom hook and the ratcheting mechanism. On a sedan, the top of the bike is above the roof so it also increases drag on the car but that is the nature of a bike rack on a car that doesn't interfere with parking sensors.
Not thrilled.
Our experience with this bike rack was not great, as listed: - The locking mechanisms are finicky and difficult to use correctly. Often they did not lock correctly. - The mechanism on the arms that attaches to the bike is not a great design. First, they attach to the bike where a water bottle cage would typically by. Second, it bounced off of my bike, causing my bike to fall during transit. Fortunately the tire ties kept my bike from falling to the ground and I was on a small road and could easily pull off. - It dented my car at the support locations and wore the protective layer off of the paint. The one thing it did do was, with some extra bungies on the bikes, allowed us to get out while transporting 2 bikes to a trailhead.
Didn’t fit Volvo xc60
I purchased the product as it has potential to be an excellent solution to not having a hitch, but also not wanting to use the roof rack for my bike. I ordered the rack to the specifications of my 2019 Volvo XC60, and unfortunately it didn’t fit. The hooks don’t fit at the top of the hatch. They need to really be jammed in, which was difficult to do without damaging the car. Once in, the hatch won’t open without damaging the car. Could potentially be a great solution if it fit properly, which I suspect it does for some cars out there. But not for a volvo xc60.

Stable, Safe, Secure, Easy to Use Bike Carrier
Fits our 2018 Golf Sportwagen well and is easy to remove and re-install - with the experience of the first installation behind us, so it does not need to be left on the car, unless you want to. The increase in wind noise from the rack, with or without bikes, is minimal and noticeable only at higher speeds. Clamps are versatile, allowing for use with odd-shaped and large down tubes or bikes without a traditional crossbar without needing an accessory crossbar. Really like that the rack and bikes do not cover the rear lights and license plate. There is no vibration or movement of the bikes, wheels, or handlebars, even at highway speeds or on gravel roads. We're happy with this well designed and built carrier and would buy it again.
