Not Worth It Yet
I bought this to replace my 20-yr-old Weber kettle premium, but ended up returning it. I really wanted to like this grill - I have the Bonfire and that's been really nice. I know this grill is supposed to be about convenience, and it does do a good job of burning coals consistently for a long time. However, it doesn't get hot enough, especially during colder months. It's also not great for smoking because you can't adjust the lower vents. The 2-piece design and lack of wheels make it a bit of a hassle to move around my patio. Finally, there were some quality issues with the grill I received. The vent on the lid was way too loose and could not be tightened since it was riveted on, so every time I opened the lid, the vent would swing around and I'd have to reposition it after putting the lid back on. Finally, one of the handles on the ash pan broke off after the first couple of cooks. Maybe it's because I ordered this grill when it first came out on REI's website, but this was a disappointing overall experience. I'm going back to my $200 Weber for now, but hopefully there will be better design/build quality in future versions.
Mediocrity for a Premium Price
For ME, it’s dizzying price point requires stellar performance. At best, the SSG is problematic. In colder, non-optimal weather, it’s an unusable fail. It does NOT: 1) light easily, 2) burn evenly or 3) heat up enough. For $200, it should do all those things well - but at its actual price of $600, I deserve flawless performance. Grade: D- Summary: Don’t waste your money
Easy decision
I got this bundle, because the Solo fire pits were all sold out, but it’s really helpful to have all the extra pieces, as well as the Solo stove. It’s fantastic.
