A good addition to your gear.
Although I prefer to secure loads in my truck with ropes (or cam straps for my canoes and kayaks), I so far have found a couple of ways to use the Matador straps that were more than satisfactory. At first glance, the straps are a little odd looking but it quickly became obvious how they are used. Both ends have slider buckles to tighten the strap once once the anodized aluminum hook is attached to the other end’s loop. I first used the strap to secure my 60 quart cooler (all by itself without anything up against the four sides) in the middle of my pickup truck bed to see if it would remain still on a road trip. I ran the strap through both handles across the top of the cooler from one side of the truck bed rails to the other. I had to use a loop of cord to close the gap as the strap did not reach clear across. The small aluminum "hook and loop" at the ends of the strap make for a rapid disconnect to allow access the cooler's interior when needed; this was a feature I didn't realize would be so useful as I always have to untie the cooler when I use a length of rope for the same purpose. When reconnecting the hook to the Hypalon loop, the tension had been already set previously by tightening the strap with the slider buckle. This was helpful when others had to access the cooler as they could easily re-secure the cooler. A quick glance assured me that it was ready to continue on the journey. I drove 750 miles with the Matador straps securing this load without having it come loose, the straps and buckles held fast without any slack forming at all. Another use I discovered that was extremely helpful was when I picked up a spiral cut ham and had to take it back to my mom’s house for her Independence Day party. I had this ham which, although it was double bagged, I was worried that if I didn’t secure it upright in the back seat that it might leak. I took the strap and was able to quickly run it through the bag’s loop handles and up around the back seat’s headrest. I then cinched the straps tight and the bag was held securely upright on the floor for the trip home. I have always told folks that “If you can’t tie a knot, tie a lot!” I can now change that second half to “get a Matador Strap”. As someone who prefers using ropes, I give this product 4 stars but I will keep these straps in my truck as I no doubt will soon discover other ways that they will “save the day”.
Super Home and Shop Helper
These small (a pair easily fit in a trouser pocket along with your keys or wallet or is a purse, smock Pocket, etc) straps are very easy to use and can, because of their 8ft length (each!), be used where other straps come up short. The straps may be a bit long for attaching something to your bike rack unless you wrap around several times, but for cinching together packs, or bundles of sticks for firewood, or keeping drawers closed when moving furniture, these can’t be beat! You can easily chain them together to make them longer for big stuff (like my armoire when I moved it). They are also very durable - the buckles are almost 3mm thick, and the webbing used looks to be made to last a long time. I found one downside: the loose ends of these straps tend to dangle as there is no elastic or such to bundle them up with (I think I will make one and add it to my straps) or to have a little pouch to stuff tag ends into, or the straps themselves when in a pack or pocket - this would keep them from unrolling. I may go get few more anyway!
Great for traveling
At first, I wasn't sure on how I could use the gear straps. However, I needed to bring my hydration backpacks with me. So I used the gear straps to attach them to each of our 40L backpacking backpacks so we could bring them into our flight and be able to use them when we went on short hikes. These gear straps have so many uses, that you can only be limited by your imagination. I have also used them to shrink my sleeping back so I could fit more stuff in my traveling backpack. The straps never gave in or lost their tightness.
The tie you didn't know you needed
Right out of the package I thought, "these might be useful but I have no idea what for." I couldn't think of any other use other than tying gear to my backpack, or maybe securing some extra stuff on my roof-racks, but figured I'd pack them with every camping trip for when they would inevitably come in handy. Last weekend I finally got to put them to use! our four post pop up tent kept blowing away, and wouldn't stay in the ground without a little extra support. I was able to tie it to two trees with these easily and it was a quick (necessary) fix. At first right out of the package I was hoping they would be a little longer, but for their thickness and uses that would be coupled with that kind of thickness, after using them, I now think that any more length would make them unmanageable. The hardware is pictured - left out in the rain all weekend, and I only got them a few weeks ago, but I believe they are made of aluminum so I do not anticipate rust being an issue. Looking forward to seeing how else I can use these on future trips.
Tough little straps
Really like the pull tabs on both ends. They are narrower but longer than most camping straps. Very lightweight. workrd well to lash gear to my car roof.
The do all gear strap
Initially I thought these would be too long for most of my uses, but they are actually the perfect length. My main application is strapping a lifejacket and water bottle to my paddle boars, my epoxy board doesn't have a tie down system. These are plenty long enough to go all the way around the board and hold everything firmly in place. I also have been using them while bike packing to keep my sleeping bag compressed and more aerodynamic. The use I initially thought I would have for these is to hold my expedition megamat in a smaller roll, and it is perfect for that but also has way more uses. My only con is that I wish there was a way to attach the ends to the strap, like a small piece of elastic to tuck the end into, or putting some type of hook on the end.
long, thin and seem flimsy
the straps are thin and very long. kind of spindly and twisty. the clips are small and do not appear to be strong. i would not use these for anything heavy or valuable. they might be ok for light duty - like lashing a sleeping bag to a backpack - but i would still prefer thicker straps that would be easier and more satisfying to handle. these might be ok for going super light weight if that is an objective.
OK. Easy to lose.
They do the job. They're a pain in the butt to hook when you're shivering :) Next round I'll get slightly wider straps with a pop of color so they don't get lost as easily. I wouldn't recommend these if you have any kind of arthritis or stiffness in your hands, or plan on recreating in cold environments.
Simple and Secure
Pretty simple product that does exactly what is says. The straps stay very secure and are dead simple to use. Yes, you could probably do the same thing with some webbing or rope, but this is so simple and foolproof. Very handy to keep in your backpack or car when you need to quickly secure something. The length is very versatile for all sorts of securing.
Great Quality Gear Strap
I like this straps, they are made of great quality and great for holding my sleeping back together so that I can put it in the stuff sack easier.
