Rear fender sucks, just like on the last Townie, so, after contacting Electra, I cut the line to the rear taillight, took off the rear fender and installed the SKS Razor mudguard fender that I bought on Amazon. That installed just under the seatpost with no tools, just an allen wrench to adjust the angle. Ah, no more cracking, rattling fender driving me batty. This mudguard is completely silent. I have a Nightrider taillight at the top of the seatpost anyway, so I don't have to have the built-in taillight. The headlight and pedal assist still work just fine.
Please be aware before buying that a standard bicycle rack will not transport this bike. It is heavy! The pedal assist is easy to use, though, and eco setting is enough for me to make it home 15 minutes faster than with old unassisted Townie while still getting a good workout. (I would not use anything higher than eco setting on sidewalks!)
Let me start by saying REI was wonderful in taking care of us during this experience. I test rode the step through, the new version, as well as this step over. I ultimately decided to purchase the step over. We went on a 29 mile ride. After 1 hill during the first mile, the pedal assist gave out. It gave out for 10 miles. Eventually we were able to get the pedal assist to work; HOWEVER, it “died” about 15 times for me. I switched bikes with my boyfriend (he has the co-op 1.1 electric and it works flawlessly) and he counted the pedal assist failing 27 times, approx 1-2 times per mile for the 14.5 mile ride home. We’re in our late 30s, in great shape, and ride our manual bikes regularly….. luckily, he was able to pedal up the hills necessary to get us home. This bike is heavy, which is expected as it is a beach cruiser + the battery weight, etc. I will say that it is very comfortable to ride, I love the flat foot technology, but its awkward to stand and ride to get up hills. I owned this bike for less than 1 day before returning. REI was very understanding and gave a full refund.
Got the step through and the step over version. These bikes are so smooth and well engineered. The Bosch drive system they come with is more than adequate for the steep hills in my area.
I looked around at e-bikes and found the Electra Townie-go to have the most features for the best price for what I wanted. Internal 5 speed rear hub, Bosch motor & battery, integrated lights, fenders & rack. The only issue I have is there is a little rattling in the fenders when going over rough pavement, other than that it’s a great bike.
Haven't ridden bike much (surgery) but quite it feels very comfortable and accomodates different family members.
