Good bag but a few changes would be nice.
I like the design of the bag. The materials are well made. I like the mesh at the top. I originally wanted to use this bag to store my kitchen Items. I do wish the bag was deeper. If you want to use this to store camping pots and pans you can not store them laid on their side. I have the sea to summit alpha pan 8 inch and the collapsible pots. If the bag was just 2 inches deeper and a few inches wider you could use bag for storing, the pots butane & propane with out the mesh being stretched. It is possible but don’t want the zipper to break on me. These bags are not cheap! The Velcro on the sides is another thing I do not like. It should be 3 Velcro rows on the side and the top velcor be sown level to the the zipper. If you have semi heavy items the dividers fall off. I hope they make other colors. I do have one of each size of this bag. I do like the bags and would recommend them. Just know certain Items will not fit.
Great Construction, Great for Organization
Introduction: I was sent the REI Pack Away Bin, the 10, 15, & 25L Cubes, and the 25L adjustable cube as an REI Product Advisor. I will format the review so that the specific product related is reviewed individually at the top with the entire system reviewed below that. As such, much of the entire system review will be repeated between the different products. This product was taken on a trip to Fort Mountain State Park in Georgia with my wife and two dogs. We chose to take make the 6+ hour drive because it got us far enough south to celebrate New Years outdoors. It was in the 60s during the day there. We also went to Georgia because they have Pioneer Campsites which are three-wall shelter like you’ll find on the Appalachian Trail. Eliminating the need to have our own tent combined with the space-saving achieved through the Pack Away system is what allowed us to take the trip in a Hybrid sedan rather than our much less gas-efficient SUV. The 25L Adjustable Cube Top Line Reactions • Sturdy Construction • Window makes finding you gear easy • Dividers really aid organization This was my favorite of the bins. My wife used this for her clothes. Quote from her: “The items I was able to fit in the adjustable 25L pack were 2 bras, 2 pairs of underwear, 4 pairs of socks, 2 sweaters, 2 pairs of leggings, 1 long tank top, 2 t-shirts, 2 long sleeve shirts, and 1 pajama set.” As you can see in the photo all the clothes were rolled in such a way that she could access any off the items at any time. The dividers greatly assisted her in doing this. I should note that while she divided the cube into thirds the dividers attach by Velcro so you could also rearrange them to divide it in half or remove them entirely. I don’t know what REI will be charging for this but buying the divider pack is likely a little more expensive than buying the 25L pack as part of the 10L, 15L, and 25L set. If you are committed to buying this system, I recommend at least one of these divider packs. They are very handy for keeping clothes and other small items organized. Like all the Pack Away products this has a sturdy construction. The mesh window is not flimsy in the way some mesh is and the fabric and zippers will hold up well over the long-haul. REI Pack-Away bin system Top Line Reactions • Cubes pack in bin well. • Full windows allow quick item identification • 140L bin allows many cubes to be packed inside. This review is for the Pack-Away system. First, the 140L bin is supposed to hold 6 25L bins or 8 15L. We used it for clothes, dry good foods, and bedding. There are plenty of other possible uses although I would recommend things with sharp corners. Even if it is strong fabric it’s still fabric. Fully loaded I think it probably weighed between 35-45 lbs. It was not hard to carry to our site, which was about a hundred-yard walk in. If that were too heavy or the walk longer, they make it extremely easy for two to carry with the many handles. Something that my wife commented was that it was very easy to repack to clean up at night, so you don’t have gear spread around potentially getting lost or dirty. The windows on the cubes are great because you can see what is inside but the mesh is of the thicker variety so it doesn’t have the potential to get a tear the way that some mesh can. One thing I should note is that I’ve never owned another pack-system. We used Tupperware totes, plastic toolboxes, and canvas shopping bags. To these, this system is immensely superior. Tupperware drives me crazy because while it’s sturdy it makes packing with limited space impossible. This is great because while its firm it has some give so if you needed to shove that extra sleeping bag on top of it in your trunk you can. That is helpful. Conclusion: Anyone who does a fair amount of car camping with multiple people will find this useful. Possibly it’s best use will be at home keeping the first-aid, flashlights, extra cord, rain gear, and all the other stuff you only use camping consolidated and ready to go with you on your next adventure. The product itself is high quality and it serves an excellent purpose.
Versatile stroage unit
These cubes are strongest in conjunction with the Pack Away Bin system; their "nesting" design makes them a really useful addition to camp-gear storage, especially as related to that stuff that never leaves the camp gear collection. The cubes work especially well for partitioned/categorized storage of camp gear. We are using cubes to stow dedicated camp gear and subdivide for needs/uses; flashlights, headlamps and batteries as example. Essentially, the camp has been broken down to kits stored in each cube, improving access and organization. The adjustable variant is my favorite. The 25L is a little too big to be fully useful in the bin system (I'd love to try a 15L adjustable variant), but it can be done with creative use of geometry and a bit of stuffing, and its dividing compartments have made it perfect for storing our camp dish ware in a single spot. We've set the dividers to accept our plates and bowls while separating mugs and other cup-ware. Jostling and disruption are minimal, despite the placement of our bin in the very back of our micro-camper. The dividers in the 25L adjustable cube certainly help with that. Obviously, the more volume we consume in each cube, the more secure they seem to be against jostling from the road. I would not necessarily recommend its use for loose or fragile items. We camp a family of six, and while the 25L dishware kit is pretty full, we have plenty of room to spare in the overall kit. I suspect more cubes, both adjustable 25L variants and smaller, will be added to our stock. My one reservation would be against storing liquids, especially chemicals, as I am not sure the cubes and bin will contain spills. We have retained some of our plastic tub storage for those purposes. And while the cube is sturdy, it is not rigid. It is not a stand-alone protective case. The materials and construction are what I would expect of REI products; they exude quality and I expect them to be in service for years. I'm happy to recommend their purchase.
Better than a bag or box
I used the 25L to hold some of my camp kitchen and picnic accessories. The see-thru cubes are great because you can see inside in a glance. I also like the material because it makes it easier to pack all of the cubes inside without the space restriction of plastic boxes. The material is also great because it won’t break down in the weather elements over time.
Versatile, lightweight cube for travel or camping
This is the item that improved my camping life. I bought it to organize my miscellaneous picnic table equipment for cooking, etc. I can adjust the dividers to exactly where I need them, it keeps the bugs and critters out and allows me to easily see and access what I need, all in a compact, lightweight, totable and packable size that is better than my plastic bins. I will probably also use them as intended in my luggage in the future, too. The zippers work smoothly and this cube is quality made.
Nifty idea
This was a pretty cool and helpful update on a good ol' packing cube. I liked the ability to separate items and move the partitions as needed. Initially, I got this as part of the Pack-Away system and to be placed in the Pack-Away Bin, but I found that I didn't really have a use for the partitions for deep storage needs, such as in the bin. However, I'll be buying more for use in our van camper as they are great for dividing clean and dirty clothes on the fly. One partition stays in place for shoes throughout the trip, and the other one moves as the dirty clothes take more space and the clean clothes take less. It was a great size for a long weekend trip and was a nice alternative to a duffle bag. I would note that the rough side of the Velcro is pretty aggressive, and you need to be careful near delicate fabrics like swimwear.
Good Quality
The bin is good quality and I like the see through top. The dividers are easy to move to fit your needs and hold up after taking them in and out multiple times. That being said I wish that it was a rigid container. It is too big to put inside another bag or backpack. Thus I would like for it to be able to keep its shape as the contents get totally squished if you set anything on top of it. I’m not a climber, but I could see that this may be useful for climbing gear. I ended up using it to store camping food in our gear closet.
My new favorite piece of gear!
I am in love with these new packing cubes. I have the adjustable one, as well as two other smaller ones. The mesh top is perfect for seeing what's in there. The fabric is awesome - not too flimsy, so it stands up nicely, but not too rigid, so it can compress down if needed. After decades of camping, and now struggling with brain fog, I have been needing more ways to keep my gear organized so I can easily find what I need.
More colors for stowage please!
I like this product very much, because the mesh panel makes it great for storing winter clothes. But it should be available in more than one color. I use these for storing my wool clothing to protect them from moths while allowing some air circulation. Specifically, after I use a wool top or pair of botttoms or socks, I put them in a storage cube until I am ready to do a wool wash. This is part of my strategy for avoiding moth damage. But the clean cube and the dirty cube look the same, so I get mixed up. Even if we could get one color one year and another the next, that would help.
Nice but spendy
Nice collapsible storage cube, but a bit pricey for a basic container. The dividers Velcro doesn’t hold very well, if you choose to use them.
