I really wanted to like this jacket, but I’ve had a few reservations about it upon receiving it.. First, I’m not a fan of the zipper orientation at all, as it’s on the left side when most jackets are on the right. The fly that covers the zipper is essentially laid open, exposing it to the elements. And the buttons to clasp it at the top and bottom along the zipper track are actually quite awkward.. I thought I might get used to these things, but unfortunately it’s troublesome every time I wear it. Now, to address the obvious reasons why someone would buy this jacket. Rain… I finally had the opportunity to try it out in a light rain scenario where I could see how well it would hold up in a very light drizzle. Unfortunately, not well at all. Even worse than I suspected for a jacket in this price range. Within 10 minutes (of a *very light* drizzle) I noticed it was already wetting out on the cuffs and portions of my sleeves and chest. This is just based on what I could physically see at the time during a 30 minute walk. Rain wouldn’t bead-off as expected, but seemed to remain in place, causing it to wet out faster. By the time I finished, it was wetting out inside with spots soaking through the interior. The lip of the hood, shoulders, and chest / back were already soaking in as if there weren’t any rain guard applied to the jacket at all. I understand most jackets have a limit, and this jacket isn’t to be compared to something of stronger durability like Gore-tex but let me repeat that this was an extremely light rain… something I’ve used MANY times with different North Face jackets which cost even less. This one is definitely going back.
I kept searching for a light weight rain jacket that was comfortable and actually repelled rain. My search is over! The the Rab Eco Jacket is light weight, comfortable and has the added benefit of breathability due to the zippered area in the armpit area. The jacket is a no muss jacket that fits exactly as advertised and is not super loud like other brands. I have used this jacket on numerous occasions in conditions ranging from light mist to heavy downpours and have been very pleased by the performance in all. I highly recommend this jacket to anyone who will or potentially will be out in the rain and weather.
This jacket is so comfortable and lightweight while still providing warmth and of course it main purpose of shedding rain. The vented pit stops are a must have and are easily unzipped without having to remove the jacket to do so. Many other jackets are difficult to unzip the vents due to placement of the zippers. I'm a big guy so I ordered the big guy size and it fits perfectly while still looking great. I'm so happy with this purchase and it will be my favorite go to, hopefully for many years to come.
In anything more than 10 minutes of a light shower your shoulders are getting wet, and the breathability is terrible. DWR finish is some of the worst I've ever seen and the jacket "wets out" in a matter of minutes. Good fit though if you don't care much about the actual performance. Slightly roomy and goes over other clothes easily.
The jacket fit well and was loose enough to be very mobile. The jacket does run a bit small, so I was unable to add many layers underneath, just a t-shirt, anything more made the fit too tight. For light to medium rain it does its job, although it does not insulate well in the cold, so it is not a cold weather jacket. The jacket was used to hike in light rain as well as rafting and it kept my upper-body dry. Overall it is a great jacket to use for rain or as a windbreaker.
Note: I was provided with this jacket in exchange for a review. I was really excited about this jacket, wanted to love it. In the end though, while it does the job, it's really only good, not great, which doesn't justify the price point. Pros: lightweight & packable, keeps the water off, versatile hood. Pit zips useful for thermal management and not common on lightweight rain layers. Cons: not as breathable as 20,000g rating might suggest. Fit is odd, too tight in the waist to accommodate any layering. Two large disclaimers that the hand pockets are not waterproof and shouldn't be used for phone storage... But those are the only pockets... Where am I supposed to put it? In theory, this is probably just a disclaimer against condensation since these pockets can also be used for ventilation. My phone (water resistant) didn't get wet during any of my testing, despite steady rain, but at this price point, should have a waterproof lined third pocket if the hand pockets are needed for ventilation.
This jacket does the job. It's waterproof, light weight, and easily packable. It fits well and looks good. I bike commute and it has definitely kept me dry during some soggy rides. Only reason I don't give it 5 stars is the interior material does not feel great against the skin (kind slick)
I bought the blue one that's on sale (3/24/23). The REI stickers describe it as men's. The RAB tags indicate that it's a women's. And the zipper is opposite of men's coats. That said, it's not cut especially feminine. I looked in the mirror and my wife looked at it on. It looks like a coat. I'm leaning toward keeping it. I'll just have to get used to the zipper..... Btw. I'm 6'0". 175 lbs. Bought the large to go over a mid layer and a puffy. It fits just right for that.
Though the product code (QWG-82) matches what the Rab website says is a men's jacket, this jacket has the zipper on side expected for a woman, has a slightly slim fit around the waist, and has higher pockets than most men's jackets. So, in essence, it's a woman's jacket. That being said, it looks fine on a guy and none of that bothers me enough to send it back. The jacket is not absolutely waterproof, but few things are. It works fine for my purposes so far, but will probably get another jacket for backpacking trips. I also won't buy Rab again due to the fit.
Works as advertised. Kept me dry during an entire day of drizzle and light rain. It is not insulated, so might be complemented with mid and base layers in 50 Fahrenheit and below weather. Works well as windbreaker. And the armpit openings help cooling you down if you've been hiking for a little while. Cannot comment on durability at this time since only used a couple of times, but so far it has not fallen apart with the intended use.
