Pricey but worth it
Our 13 lb Havanese dog rides in this Basil carrier while his 10 lb sister is in my Timbuk2 Muttmover backpack. I zip-tied a rectangle of fabric on top of the wire dome to give him some shade, which has worked out really well. Aside from that little DIY improvement, I find nothing lacking about this product, which also goes by the name Basil Buddy, from the Basil company in the Netherlands, and usually comes in blue or brown. This one seems to be a special white variant Basil made in partnership with Trek's Electra brand. REI had the best price for the carrier and wire dome combo, and obviously the best return policy, so I chose this one. My bike, a large 2022 Specialized Turbo Vado, came with a MIK rack, and this carrier securely locks onto it. You will need to buy a $30 carrier plate for your rack if it isn't already MIK-compatible. You may also want to grab a tape measurer and visualize how much space this carrier will take up. While not huge, it is large for a bicycle accessory. With the wire dome on top, I measure it at 17.5" tall, 17" long, and 13" wide. The MIK adapter on the bottom of the carrier is located right up against the front edge, so chances are your saddle will still have some clearance behind it.
Can’t wait to take my cat biking this weekend!
I’m not sure why there would be complaints about this. It’s pretty awesome. I’ve been looking for a safe way yo take my cat biking with me for awhile and anything soft-sided didn’t seem like a good idea. Yeah… it’s costs more money, but the construction of it is high quality! You get what you pay for. It does say that it is meant for MIK racks and if you don’t have one, you need to buy the adapter. I have a MIK rack and it clipped in perfectly. It is incredibly secure and I feel confident taking her out with me now. I also love the handle, so I can carry her inside a brewery stop along the way. It’s exactly what I wanted!!!
Bring all your friends along!
Exactly what I was looking for to bring my feathered friends on my bike rides (hey, it’s Portland). Definitely pricey and if your bike rack isn’t Mik compatible you’ll need to buy the attachment (it wasn’t too expensive). I probably wouldn’t have purchased it if I hadn’t gotten a deep discount, but I’m glad I did!
Who Would Have thought?
We got this pet carrier for our Yorkie as we felt the other basket we had did not offer enough safety, This is a nice product, fairly well thought out and provides a safe environment. We did opt for the wire top, which secures to the plastic piece via a bungy system that provides a very snug fit. The plastic portion also comes with a pad, and tie down for the pet. It uses the MIK system for securing to the rear bike rack, so you will need to have that already, or buy the adapter in order to use this carrier. I really don't understand the rationale behind this system, as it does not "lock" anything in place, nor do you really need the special "key" to remove it from the rack. My only other complaint about this system is the price - Basil is very, very proud of he product and seemingly, charges accordingly. But, it works, the Yorkie (Molly) is relatively safe and secure, so we are all happy.
Great carrier, Fastener for Cage Not Great.
The pet carrier is the perfect size for my Pomeranian. It snaps in securely on my MIK rack. The only down side is how the top cage fastens to the carrier. The carrier has elastic bands in front and back that hook on the cage. On one of the bands, the plastic covering to prevent it from pulling through the carrier has come off. Also, once my Pom is trained to ride in it, I can see him chewing on the bands where it inserts in the carrier. I will have to come up with another system to secure the cage.
Mis Leading Info
When ordering the Pet Carrier, no where does it say that the MIK carrier plate is not included. That is an extra $30. And it is not available through REI where the pet carrier was ordered. Not happy. Will not order from them again.
Garbage
Absolutely garbage.. its made of biodegradable plastic.. which means after about a year of regular u.v. exposure.. you dog might as well be in an eggshell.. it'll break right off the mounting bolts.. and it looks like it wpuld protect your dog in a reck.. it will not.. where the cage rests.. sits on rubber brackets heald in by a piece of elastic cord.. just cheap made junk..
