Great taste
Peak Refuel is a new brand to me, and I was interested in it as an alternative to Mt House, which I've used for decades. I tested the Sweet Pork & Rice on a recent backpack trip, and loved the taste and texture of the recipe. Definitely on the sweet side but also has a bit of heat. Nice blend. The chunks of pork were a nice surprise. Slightly heavier than Mt House and a bit pricier, but this one is great... I will try more. Watch out Mt House!
BEST MEAL YOU'LL EAT ON TRAIL
This was the best freeze dried meal I've ever had on trail. The food quality was so good, I'd order it at a restaurant. Only downside was the serving size is a tad small. After hiking all day I shared the two servings with my hiking partner and it wasn't quite the full meal we were hoping for. I'll definitely buy it again, but next time, I'm not sharing. Highly recommend for one person.
Too sweet
Had high hopes for this dinner pack, but I didn't read the nutrition label and was caught off guard by how sweet this meal is. Makes you way too thirsty when you are out backpacking, so watch out.
Sweet meal for a sweet trip
Not too bad, had lots of veggies, and pork, flavor was a bit interesting but it was good. The size on the package said for 2 but after a day of carrying a 60 lbs. pack and then hunting once I reached my destination, it’s a meal for one. It may be okay for 2 if you're not big eaters but one burns a lot of calories backpacking and I wouldn’t plan on this being a 2 person dinner. (sorry no pics, haven’t been able to figure out how get them from my photo album to this site)
Really Good
For freeze dried this meal is delicious. A couple caveats though. Calling these packets "2 servings" is pretty ridiculous. For a petit person maybe but your average person is going to need the whole meal, especially after a long day out on the trail. Peak isnt the only company guilty of this and I'm not really sure why they do that but if you split this meal with someone you're going to be left very hungry. The rehydrate time of 10 minutes isnt really accurate and needs more like 20-30 minutes to fully rehydrate depending on how cold it is out but this is generally true of most freeze dried meal instructions. My main issue is that its a sweet meal. Some other reviews touch on this but too harshly. There are many different types of BBQ and this just trends toward the sweeter side while I personally prefer a more tangy and spicy flavor. All the same for being freeze dried they did an excellent job. If Peak reads these reviews please make a version thats more tangy and spicy with less sugar.
Great Quality, Way Too Sweet.
I bought this and tried it in Yosemite after a long day of hiking. The pork didn’t seem to rehydrate very well but maybe because I was at slight altitude. Anyway the food was great quality and it definitely tasted good. But was wayyyyy too sweet for me. Almost like there was straight brown sugar poured into the bag. I don’t think I would buy it again unless they toned down the sweetness but it’s worth a shot. It’s definitely not terrible.
WOW!
Tired of another brands somewhat bland tasting meals, I decided to try Peak's meals. Being a fan of BBQ pulled pork, I decided to try the sweet pork and rice. WOW! I was hooked! This was a very delicious meal. The flavors didn't give away that this was a dehydrated meal. The meal rehydrated very well with the rice not being crunchy. The portioning was also very good as a pack has two servings but if you're doing strenuous hiking, one pack (2 servings) works great! I immediately restocked for my next adventure! I tried some of the other Peak meals as well and they were all very good!
Tasty, but way too sweet.
This was very tasty and filling. I liked the pieces of shredded pork and the overall flavor was good, but it was WAY too sweet. I wanted to eat more, but the sweetness turned me off.
Blown away
I was a little hesitant about this meal because it didn't seem like something I would love. But the pork is so tender and flavorful after rehydrating that it's mind boggling. I'm constantly blown away by how fresh these meals taste. It was quite filling and I felt like I was rolling out of my grandmother's house after a holiday meal, ha ha! The sauce has a nice sweetness to it. The only thing I didn't care for so much was that there is a hint of something hot/spicy in it which doesn't agree with me due to a minor health issue. Not terribly hot, but I had no idea it might be spicy, so just be aware if you can't eat or don't enjoy spiciness. I probably won't be able to have it again but if I could I would!
