Awesome watch!
After having several disappointing experiences with Garmin products and their customer service, it’s great to have a legitimate competitor. I have used this watch for about a month while trail running, hiking, resort skiing, touring and while at the gym. The battery is phenomenal and for the most part everything works really really well. It’s not the greatest tracking strength training but that’s not what I bought it for. Loading trails is super easy and is very helpful if your phone dies when really cold. I can’t recommend this watch enough; I was on the fence between this and taking another risk with a Garmin product and really glad I went this route.
Very well constructed and long battery life
I had been using this watch for just over a year now. I would take it off when rock climbing but it's been with me on all alpine and ice trips. I haven't seen any scratch on it yet. Still looks pretty new to me. I took it onto an overnight alpine trip with GPS on and still had 70% battery when I got back to car. I found it acquires GPS signal quite fast if it acquired signal in that area before. The only slight downside is the rubber/silicon band feels really tight if I want to get consistent heart rate readings. I'm very surprised how fast this brand is adopting different needs. They roll out new function every once a while. I don't necessarily use all of those functions but some people may find it useful. Pretty impressive new brand.
Unbelievable battery life
Going into this, I was nervous, but I still needed to try something to work. I have to say I am blown away. Battery life is unreal. I have been using it for a month and only had one charge after the initial one. After four days of big tracking each day (8-10h each), the battery life was still just over 50%. The recent ski touring update was awesome to display different data screens on uphill/downhill runs. Auto lap count is very convenient. There must be a great mind behind the brand to develop the products for what mountain athletes need. This is the best watch I’ve ever had.
Game changer!!!
Have been using it for months. This is now my go-to watch for all my outdoor sports. Solid build, insane battery, countless modes, rich metrics, GPS guide. Just everything I need for my outdoor adventures. Have been using it for jogging, hiking, climbing, backcountry trips, etc. I trust this watch in any condition and I feel it can last forever. Downside? Took me some time to mess around and learn all the settings and features. This watch is without doubt built for PROs.
Wayyyyyy overpriced. Accuracy limitations.
Pros: battery life, construction Cons: PRICE, expected features for that price. I seriously question the accuracy of this watch. I use it predominantly for long distance hikes. When I take a break, leaving gps on, the watch will continue to add milage and altitude to the hike. The heart rate moniter is super slow to adjust and I do not trust it. While climbing, it has a good 3-5 minute lag before accurate readings. For $400 I would be all over this watch, but $600? Yeah right. I don't think it should be REI's responsibility that I'm returning it to them. For comparison, my phone, running GAIA does not add milage/elevation while stopped. Over a 30 minute break, the watchs added 300 feet gain and .25 milage.
Impressive
UPDATE OK I have now used this watch on a 12 day Pfiffner Traverse, plus some bike rides. On the bike, no big deal - it works well. On the traverse, I had the HIKE mode running about 8-9 hours per day, some days full GPS, other days ULTRAMAX mode. Around Day 6, I charged the watch, although I could have gotten 1 more day out of it. ONE WEEK! I love not having to worry about the battery for an entire week. And when you do charge, its done in an hour or so, I believe. The screen is easy to read above treeline. However in the forest, the high reflection will pick up the canopy and can make reading the display tough at times. At the end of each day, over bluetooth, I download the GPX file into my smartphone GAIA app. No internet needed, thank goodness. The track appears in GAIA and I can marvel at how slow I am. The ULTRAMAX mode is not great if you need precise tracking, which I seldom need, so I will continue to use it over full-time GPS. Thats not a "watch thing" - any watch that samples GPS will take a hit to accuracy. Worth it. Also, still not a scratch on the watch, although I tend to be a little careful. Again, note that the COROS has a barometric altimeter as well as GPS-based. So the elevation is displayed at all times. I love this - its lacking on many watches. So, this watch is a hit for me. No regrets yet and I am still thrilled with it. ============== It’s only been a few days. I will update this after the Pfiffner Traverse. Here are some reasons why this is a great watch. BUT FIRST, the packaging on this watch is obscene. A huge plastic container! If you want a Pelican case, then go buy one. Coros are shoving all of these plastic containers into the world for no good reason. It's RIDICULOUS. OK moving on.... Battery Life I need a watch that I can take on backcountry trips of 10, 20, 30 days and not have to worry about frequent charging. Also with this battery life I can spend more time in cold winter ski tours and not be obsessing about the remaining battery. Ergonomics The rotating knob is great. So much better than pressing buttons over and over. Zooming into a gps route is a breeze. Navigating menu options is zippy. What a great idea. Touch screens are nice but not with gloves. Winter Use and Mountaineering. You really can operate this watch with winter gloves. Full-Time Elevation The barometric elevation can be displayed on your watch face WITHOUT initiating an activity. I cannot tell you how basic this is, but nobody does it. FEET PER HOUR! Finally an actual mountaineer apparently got involved and incorporated an ascent rate in feet per hour. Been waiting for this since my beloved Vertech Alpin II - look it up (don't). Customer Support The day I got the watch I had 2 issues. I received help within 2 hours both times. Amazing. Misc The accuracies of heart rate and gps appear to be good thus far. So... this might be a great choice for a runner. But the Vertix is, in my opinion, an EXCELLENT choice if you are into mountaineering, long backcountry trips, backcountry skiing etc.
The best GPS altimeter/barometer I have ever used
I've been using the Coros VERTIX for one month now and am very impressed with this product. Over the past 15 years, I've owned the Garmin Fenix 3 and more recently, the Suunto 7 and Suunto 9 Baro watches, along with non-GPS Suunto watches that include the Vector and Core. I have never had a GPS watch with better battery life than the Coros VERTIX. And, the accuracy of the GPS and altimeter functions are superior to any of the previous watches I have owned. This is simply the best GPS watch out there, and you will not find another GPS-enabled watch with better battery life. I've charged the VERTIX one time over the past 30 days, and even that was a 50% charge. I've logged 30 hours of GPS use while mountain biking, running, and hiking and it's ridiculous, especially as compared to other watches, at how efficient this watch is with energy. Suunto's recent models - the 7 and 9/baro - are not in the ballpark, nor can they track mileage and altitude with any semblance of accuracy. The menu and navigation is clean and intuitive, though I would add it took me some time to learn about the long-press option that brings up a quick reference menu list. The watch is exceedingly light, while the stretch silicon strap is comfortable. I'm using the VERTIX for trail running, mountain biking, and ski touring, the latter of which has a dedicated app I'm excited to put to use this winter. For the money I have spent on Suunto watches have nowhere near the altimeter accuracy or battery life, the Coros Vertix is worth every single penny.
It is that good!
I spent a ton of time researching watches and putting it all together I chose the Vertix. It lives up to the hype. Hand assembled titanium, a wealth of options without adding cr#% you do not need. This being said I realize I do not use all features but that is OK as I have so many I do use. It is mostly for trail running in the mountains. But easily the app can help you create strength workouts and similar which is some thing I never thought about before. No matter where you go it’s like having a coach with you. Somehow it accurately counts sit ups and other reps as you’re doing them I don’t know how. Yes the battery is very good but to get the advertised 45 days between charges you need to not use all of the functions such as the backlight. With daily runs averaging two hours, and using the trainer function for workouts, I am averaging about 28 days between charges. That is continuous use. Using GPS maps to follow a route is great. You do not see Topo maps but it is so accurate when you follow the breadcrumb trail you would have to be an idiot to get lost. Thinking hard the only drawback I found is if I have headphones plugged into my phone while running I do not get notifications on the watch when somebody calls or texts. The pulse oxygen and HR measurements are very consistent when watch worn above wrist bone. Had a Garmin Fenix once and it kept freezing on me/software issues. Absolutely no issues with the Vertix. The app takes learning but Coros has very good videos on YouTube. There is no instructions manual in the box. Cleaning the sensors regularly is good for the watch and accuracy. Lastly, I put runs on the Ultramax mode which I really can’t see what functions are lost and I get about 20 more hours of GPS. If you are on the fence because of cost come on over to the Coros side. It’s that good (and that much better than Suunto or Garmin).
Don’t recommend it
I returned mine after a week of use. The first thing I noticed the titanium section scratches very easily! I also noticed many bugs such as turning backlight on in every hand movement which became annoying in the night time. Its software has many limitations like not giving the user an option to adjust the backlight. Its screen is very dim and very difficult to read under normal light at home. Overall, not impressed especially with the price that they are selling it. I don’t recommend it at all unless you have $600 extra in your pocket.
Can’t recommend
This product failed in multiple respects (HR monitor, dial etc). Unfortunately customer service just wants me to buy a new watch from them at a slight discount, more money for them and another shoddy watch for me. I really wanted to like this company/product but I can’t recommend you buy from them until they back their product with decent customer service, repair and/or replacement options.
