Solid Weekend Warrior Choice
I think this will work well for weekend trips. I struggled a little with opening the packages, but that could just be me. Using a knife would have made opening both much easier. When I opened the bag, it immediately smelled good. I didn't measure out the water, I just used the 10oz mark on the bag. I'm not sure if that means 10oz initially or how full it should be when everything is mixed, hydrated. Filling it to the mark initially/after first stir produced a very thick chowder. I decided to add more hot water to dilute it a bit and am still feeling like I could have added more. Outside of backpacking meals, I prefer a thicker chowder, but this felt like a bit too much. Upon eating it, I felt like I still could have added more water, but it tasted fine anyways. Each bite has a mouthful of chewiness, so its hearty. I normally repackage my food into Ziplocks; this bag is rigid. There are three items you'll have to discard: the bag, the coconut milk bag, silica bag. I would imagine these taking up a bit of space if used for most meals, but could be used for containing garbage for things that need a sturdier bag. For trips where I can afford the extra space, I think this is a great addition. It was a little messy eating out of the bag because you had to dig to get to the bottom contents, but I guess it's nice to not have to clean a pot/bowl.
Packed with delicious protein
I hugely enjoyed this dinner on a section hike in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Pros: - I’m a nutritionist, Alaskan and pescatarian so appreciated how much real food, fat from the coconut powder, smoked salmon flavor and protein was in this little meal. It actually has more protein than I need on trail, but if someone is a big protein buff you’ll appreciate it providing 78% of normal (non hiker) daily requirements - The smoked salmon was delicious, GENEROUS and kept its chewy texture even when the rest of the meal was cooked - Directions were easy to follow, esp. the “fill to here” line - Small size, appreciated with bear cans - Tastes more like “real food” than most just-add-water meals Cons: - Takes 20 min to cook which is ~8 min longer than most just-add-water meals. Tip: wrap this (and other meals) in your warm hat or puffer jacket while it’s sitting - Just under 500kcal. That’s not enough calories for me while hiking so I bulked it by adding ramen and kale, which was easy. On a thru hike I would have added oil.
So much potential
My boy and I took this with us on a trip to the Sequoia National Forest. We were both excited as we're both fans of Salmon. As any backpacker knows, dehydrated meals are a finicky thing. As is my normal procedure, I let it soak for twice the recommended time. I could tell that the flavor was excellent, but neither the salmon nor the carrots rehydrated well, leaving the texture with a lot to be desired. I will probably give this one another go, as I've had that happen before on tried and true meals. Again, the ingredients and flavor were definitely there.
Disappointing Dinner
Like other reviewers have noted, the recommended amount of water is too little. After using 10 oz of water and waiting about 30 minutes (instructions indicate to add additional time based on altitude). I had a disappointing potato paste with jerky like salmon inside. Even after adding additional water, the salmon and some of the vegetables were still not rehydrated. I could tell the individual ingredients were high quality. However, the addition of cayenne pepper made it weirdly spicy and clashed with the dill. So even if I had added enough additional water to make it into a chowder consistency, the flavors would have been off. It's a shame, I was really looking forward to this meal.
Pretty tasty
This is a hearty single serving meal that was a great change from the typical freeze dried fare. Note that is IS dairy free so if you're used to that no problem, but if you're expecting the typical chowder experience it is a little different. I did think there was a healthy amount of salmon in there, but could have benefited from a little more of something else. Cooking was easy.
Salmon mashed potatoes?
Very good for backpacking food. Not the worst flavor, smoked salmon, mashed potato flakes, and and dried green onion. First night, we diluted it to soup texture when it appeared to be an icky paste when made as directed. I added more water than called for, diluted it to soup, and sipped it with a spoon. It was OK, but no one on the backpacking trip was jealous of my dinner. The following night, I stirred it up for my husband, according to package instructions, and he said it was much better. It was like salmon mashed potatoes. Will buy again.
Great backpacking meal!
This is one of the best meals I’ve had in the backcountry out of a bag. I brought this on my backpacking trip in Idaho, and was a real treat on the mountain after many days of bars and other freeze dry. It is REAL FOOD, and it tastes like it. You can actually taste the fresh dill. Yes, the salmon doesn’t fully rehydrate but the texture is actually really nice IMO because it is a chowder. I will definitely be grabbing another bag of this for my next trip!
Just didn't hit the spot
I really really wanted to LOVE this chowder and was SUPER excited to try it, especially because it's non dairy! But it just didn't do it for me, the consistency was not very soup like and there was just something off about the dehydrated, chewy, and super salty salmon chunks in it. Not to mention that post meal both my friend I who had eaten it just felt weird. Not the experience we were hoping for in the backcountry. Overall, just could have been better.
To be fair...
Keep in mind that this is dehydrated, not freeze dried, so it does take longer and doesn’t fully rehydrate to “original” quality. I would say if I had it again I would pick out the carrot slices. The salmon is kind of a “meal” kind of like tvp (textured vegetable protein), but there is a generous amount of salmon in the bag which is the strong point of this chowda. Overall I think I’ll pass on this one, but if I had it in front of me I’d most likely scarf it down.
okay but not for the price
I actually really enjoyed the taste of this but the texture was just off and I wish the salmon were more chunked. It just tasted fish flavored not like there was fish in it. For what these cost for one serving I kinda expected better quality. They arent bad and this may be one of the only seafood options out there but to me I will spend my money on a better deal.
