Same Experience as Kenny G
The fish scale pattern simply doesn't provide enough grip. You will have to herringbone or sidestep up any mild uphill. I didn't have my inclinometer, but I estimate the maximum slope you can glide up is ~5deg. It's seriously bad. I am right in the middle of the weight range too (I am 185lbs geared up, range is 172-198 for 180cm) This was not a tuning issue. 2 Stars because they look sweet
Not The ski you want.
I have x/c skied since the early 70's old wooden ski alfa boots 3 pin bindings. Looking for a new set up to use at a track ex mountain Dell- a skier set trail beaver creek area and some back country to tour and make turns-- These are not the ones---Salomon Escape 68 Outback Cross-Country Skis, Rottefella NNN BC Magnum Backcountry Ski Bindings, Alpina Alaska BC Cross-Country Ski Boots. Went to Big cottonwood canyon Guardsman pass. started at the plow gate and went to the summit. Icy crusty 1-2" new snow. the fish scales on the ski do not work! no matter how much I adjusted my stance they would not purchase and hold any slight forward lean and they kick out behind you any back word stance to compensate and the kick out forward on the steep pitch of the pass I had to herringbone to climb at all again the scales would not purchase / set / hold if you are new to x/c. On the trip down found that the scales would not let me glide smoothly at all-- again any slight lean fwd. or back and they were out from under me Hard fall on icy crusty surface. I have skied and taught skiing for a long time and this is the worst balance issue I have ever had slight movement and they would stick and then let go and stick causing again a hard fall. After about 100 yards of this . Took them off and walked a mile down to a flatter section Put them back on to try again still same issue after another 100 yards took them off and walked the rest of the road to my car. Worst ski experience I have ever had. One more issue fish scales make all sorts of noise when gliding at all very annoying . I knew this but thought with all of the years they have been out I thought this would have been corrected. Hope these will work for someone else but I will never try this scale base again -- Trying to decide to return skis only or the entire set up. If I can find a ski I/rei believe will work then I will most likely just return the ski.
touring XC Ski
These skis worked well for me. I typically take them into the backcountry and tour on ungroomed trails. Keeps me on top of the snow, not sinking into it. The metal edges give control while on slopes. The ski's are narrow enough to fit in most groomed classic ski tracks and I've taken them to groomed areas a few times as well.
Disappointed but perhaps the wrong application
I am 6'6" and an athletic 245 pound former ski instructor. I bought the 210 cm ski which, with my weight and technique, I should be able to flatten to obtain grip. They are incredibly stiff and have a ton of camber. I have tried these in numerous snow conditions and just can not seem to find a reasonable amount of grip. They only seem to work in deeper snow. If you have a groomed trail (and I don't mean running in the tracks, but rather on the skating section) forget it. You will have no grip unless perhaps you use a ski designed for less than your recommended weight zone. Even on 4 inches of fresh powder (-9C) over a groomed track, these would not grip at all. Luckily I bring a second and sometimes 3rd set of skis whenever I go out and use whatever setup is working the best that day. Unfortunately, these have never quite worked for me and so they are reserved for true, deep snow, backcountry days only. I have lots of Salomon gear and appreciate the build quality of these skis as well as their other products. I just can't seem to get these skis to work for me. Maybe you will have better luck...

Perfect
Exactly what I wanted and what the write up described. It would’ve nice to have skins available too.
