It's a winner
I cooked this at home to try it in advance of a bikepacking trip. I expected soggy biscuits, but they were not. Flavor is very good. Texture is a little different than what you get in your favorite restaurant, but still good. When I got to the end of the package it was kind of soupy. It helped to have a longer spoon for mixing and eating. I'd have messy knuckles if I had used a short spoon or spork. If it tastes pretty good at home I know it will be even better in the field.
Best Backpacking Breakfast!
I always keep one of these in my hiking backpack. Most mornings I am up early to take the dog to one of the local parks. If I'm hungry for something more substantial than instant oatmeal I'll boil some water for tea and one of these breakfasts. I use around 10 oz of water instead of 12 oz for thicker gravy. It's hands down my favorite backpacking breakfast! The biscuit bites are large enough to keep a little crunch which is nice, and the gravy is excellent. I'm not a huge fan of the slightly rubbery re-hydrated meat bits, but there's really nothing they can do about that. Tasty though! I'd agree that it could use some pepper and just slightly less water for thicker gravy, but it's just about perfect as it is. I'd highly recommend these as a filling and great tasting backpacking breakfast!
Great Flavor
I have number of products for backpacking and emergencies. I got this to test. The flavor is extremely good. Overall texture is good. Not as "creamy gravy" as I would like. It would almost be better to make the heavy separate from the other components and add later. Overall family liked the taste.
Not impressed.
I wasn't impressed. I followed the preparation instructions on the package precisely, using a timer. Then I took a few bites and realized it needed more time. Even after letting the bag sit closed for an extra few minutes, the biscuits were tough and didn't completely rehydrate. The sausage was like gristle - rubbery, flavorless. There wasn't much flavor. The gravy was watery, nothing like any other gravy I've cooked or tried. I could taste a healthy dose of black pepper, and the nutritional information says this meal has a boatload of sodium in it, but I felt like I needed to add salt to bring out some kind of flavor. This particular meal just doesn't deliver. I've had other mountain House breakfasts that are delicious. I'm not going to buy this particular one again.
make sure yr water is *boiling* hot
I got 3 of these as part of a box I got from Costco & immediately thought it was just "cheap filler" - boy was I surprised! now it is high in sodium & it's kinda what comes with the turf if you're gonna get MH. and you def need to get your water *boiling* (not just hot) or you'll get exactly what everyone is complaining about - crunchy biscuit & sausage pieces. I myself will have to try to get it right next time but I'm pretty clear this is what happened as my 2nd MH camp meal came out better when I put hotter water in it & was more patient stirring it mid-way & just waiting longer.
really good! just add a little salt and pepper
tastes like the real thing. It looks like croutons when you first open the bag. I would add only a cup of water instead of the 1.5 cups so it's not so soupy (that's what I did). I like that some of the biscuit chunks are still a little crunchy. Very filling and delicious!! :)
Surprisingly good!
A friend gave one of these to try several years ago. It has now become a breakfast staple for me. It is a really good tasting and hearty breakfast. Make sure to stir it really well, especially down in the corners of the pouch. After I pour in the boiling water and stir it really well, I reseal it and wrap it in a small towel. Then I put it inside my coat next to my body. It warms me up while I’m getting ready for the day.
Very tasty & easy to fix
I bought this from a local store over the summer to add to my Storm supply kit. Today, the rather disappointing winter "snow storm" created a problem with the county water supply leaving nothing from the faucet but a full tea kettle on the stove. Perfect time to try the biscuits & gravy meal. I was pleasantly surprized at both the flavor and texture of the meal. The biscuits were a bit dry in spots but not very different from using yesterday's leftover biscuits for today's breakfast. I don't know that 1 pouch would feed 2 adults unless there was other food to go along with it but would definitely feed 2 small children. I'm going to buy more to have on hand.
Excellent flavor
Just had this. Its really good and I plan on eating it again. I'm from NC, and this really recreates the white sausage gravy flavor well. A word of caution: unlike the other pasta-based meals from this brand (which I normally cook for twice the recommended time), this one (which is bread-based) can be overmixed or overcooked, making it pasty
An easy hot meal, and quite tasty
I thought it was a very solid meal considering the ease of making it and how it tasted. The consistency was perfect at the quoted water required. I think it would have benefited from another few minutes to "cook" before eating, which could be attributed to the cooler weather. I think the extra time would have helped the chewy center of the biscuits and pork. Thankfully I can say this is nit picking, it was quite good even on a short trip when you aren't desperate for a hot meal. Its pricey but I don't think I'd do much better if I had to get all the ingredients myself.
