It is REALLY hard finding anything for Plus size hikers. I’m sharing my review and my size to help other plus hikers find something to get them started out in the trails for day hikes or longer hikes. I was looking for a quality backpack. I tried so many back packs at the store with no luck. Until I found this REI Co-op Women's Trail 40 Pack. I'm 5'7 2x and this pack fit my wide hips & Chest. The straps are long enough to adjust to fit my 55.5 inch waist. Although I did not buy one from the store and bought the same backpack color I wanted in red elsewhere. I really liked the REI Co-op Trail 40 Pack. I was impressed with REI brand. I like the look and the many pockets. I took this backpack on my hike to Maquoketa Caves State Park in Iowa. I hiked with this pack for 5-6hrs for my first use. My shoulders and back did not hurt. I was able to add my water bladder with no problem. Although the fit is not 100 % for my body type. It did an excellent job and did not bother my hips. I wanted an option to use my pack for light hiking and for carrying gear with. It was big enough to fit my friends coat (we all have that friend that is unprepared) and my sweater and having more room for things. So if you are plussize give this pack a try. It’s worth the price tag. If you are unsure go with a friend to the store to try it on.
I purchased size small. It’s the perfect size for my needs. I have my camera bag + my zoom lense bag in the main compartment. There is more room in the main compartment to put something else in like a sweater or hat. I love that there is a top zip pocket for my wallet, personal stuff etc. One of the important features I was looking for was an exterior pouch for water canister bottle. I have a large 40 oz as you can see in photo. It fits perfectly. There is a pouch on the other side too. This is a quality bag, comfortable and perfect size for carry-on air travel, light hiking trips etc.
This bag is the best bag ever. The most practical thing about it is 4 way zippers... it is ingenious how they zip up from the bottom to help you reach items that fell to the bottom of the bag and how the clips at the top can be positioned to create a 'stop' that prevents them from opening all the way to cause items to fall out of the bag. It is incredible. Also... the 3 water bottle pockets are so practical when you have 2 kids thermoses and your own! I recently took it to my kids' tennis practice, I had 3 stainless steel water bottles(2 small and 1 tall) in the pockets and no problems with them whatsoever. Absolutely fantastic!!
I used this pack as my only bag for 2 weeks in Europe I had no problems using it as my carry on it fit in the overhead bins extremely well and protected everything inside too. The exterior pockets where great ares to store essentials like my toiletries and medication. The adjustable straps also made it super convenient to pack in as much as possible and to compress everything down really small. Its super comfortable as well and I had no back problems even after hauling it through an airport and around multiple cities. I haven't used it for actual backpacking yet but I have a feeling it will work really well for shorter trips.
Bought this bag two years ago and have been on over 70 hikes with it. Good quality and it holds A LOT. I hike with my two small chihuahuas. One is 4lbs the other is 11lbs. On hikes that are over 10 miles, I put the 11lber in the bag and the little one in my jacket. The middle strap is perfectly centered and helps with the extra weight. Overall would recommend this to everyone!
I can honestly say that of all the struggles I faced climbing Mt. Whitney, carrying my backpack wasn't one of them! Most comfortable pack I've carried in my life. Plenty of pockets for all the on-trail essentials. Easy to adjust. Super comfortable fit. On my particular trek, I carried water bottles in the amply-sized pockets, but I would recommend using a bladder instead. I couldn't access my water bottles without the help of my trailmates, which is probably not ideal.
This backpack is well-thought out and almost well-executed; unfortunately, after just a year of sporadic use, I’ve experienced the first strap casualty. (See pictures attached.) The broken stitching doesn’t render the bag useless, so I will continue enjoying the many other features, but I’m disappointed that the bag was not constructed as durably as I’d hoped.
I like this backpack a lot, but pretty early on I started having issues with the sternum strap. It was able to slide off the pack entirely. And unfortunately, after just a couple of uses, it was lost that way. Normally this shouldn't be a major issue, but REI does not offer replacement parts for this item. And because of the design, the only way to replace it is to cut into the fabric, which would ultimately damage the integrity of the bag. So now I really can't use this bag as intended because when you are carrying a lot of weight, you really need that sternum strap for the added stability to hold it right. Until REI starts offering replacement parts for their REI-brand backpacks, I wouldn't recommend that anyone buy them.
Almost all of my gear is meant for practical use over aesthetics, but I ordered this bag over other similar brands because I wanted the Tapenade color to stand out in my backpacking photography shots. Looked like it was made of nice yellows/curry colors but it is more of an unattractive brown. Not the end of the world, just was looking forward to a more cheerful color. Maybe it will look better on the trail lol. Seems like a nice bag besides that.
Returning to backpacking after a multi-decade hiatus, and so far this is a great weekender backpack. Only had it out on a trial run, and so far so good. I love the tie down point around the pack to be able to strap on random gear. Seems like every time I get it out, and fiddle with it, I find a not so obvious and very thoughtful feature.
