It seemed like a nice boot and worked well for a short period. Unfortunately, after about the 7th time wearing them, the sole of the left boot started peeling off. See attached picture. I owned them for 11 months and REI took them back with no issues.
I purchased these and was really happy with them. I’m not a die hard backcountry XC skier. I do the Nordic trails east and west of the passes. After 10 sessions and 60mi the glue for the sole detached from the toe half way down. The other show was showing signs of the same. I got a replacement and am hoping it was a fluke. If not, I’ll update this review.
I don't like writing negative reviews but these boots deserve it. There's a seam on the back heel where they've sewn the lower to the upper. I didn't feel the seam when trying them on, but if you press your fingers up and down the inside heel you'll feel it through the padding. The seam is in an unfortunate location, and it rubbed the skin off my heel/achilles area.
For kick and glide straight track skiing it’s OK but if you dare go off track and ski backcountry or break your own trail, maybe make some turns, these boots offer no ankle support or rigidity to handle variable surface conditions, deep snow, or even a snow plow. Don’t even think about skiing with a pack or telemark turns. Comfortable and warm, but not for anything remotely off flat, straight, track.
Had just broken in these boots, maybe skied them 25 miles, when the bottom sole detached from the toe area to about half way down the boot. Was about 2 hours from the car breaking trail in the mountains. My old leather boots did the same last year after 20 years of excellent service.
I was looking for a backcountry boot that was warm and comfortable. I like to ski with my dogs on ungroomed trails in the Uinta Mountains. The BC X5 did the trick. The boot fits great; it’s warm and had the control and balance I desired. I bought a pair of the Rossignol BC 80 skis at the same time and found the skis and boots paired up nicely.
Was 4 miles from the truck and the sole detached. Luckily had some P Cord on me and limped back to the vehicle.
After light use the sole delaminated in the backcountry, hoping for a refund but doubtful from Rossignol, but maybe REI. These boots are known to delaminate and should not be sold by REI.
I had a pair of Rossignol BC X6 boots for 8 years and loved them, but all of a sudden the lining disintegrated and came apart making them unusable without getting massive blisters. REI didn't have the BC X6 available anymore, so I ordered the BC X5. The main problem was that the boots are far too deep. Even after lacing them as tight as I could get them, there was so much room in the boot vertically that my foot and heel were flopping around inside the boot. Either the footbed needs to be closer to the laces, or the top of the boot needs to be more flexible to allow for lacing even tighter. Had to return these as they would not work for me, which is too bad since I loved my Rossignol BC X6s.
The boots use very small shoelace ferrules. It is impossible to find replacement shoelaces that fit through the ferrule. I found out this the hard way
