At last!
I’ve owned and used 4 monoculars. I’ve been dissatisfied with all of them including a zoom model more expensive than this one. I haven’t been happy with any of them for a variety of reasons, but optics aside, ease of use, including holding, aiming, and focusing are important features to me. This model fits my hand nicely, focusing is intuitive, and rapid centering is quite easy. My only demerit is the lanyard, which I don’t understand (an apparently useless clip to get entangled) and will not use. The optics are superior with the correct tint, the barrel is nitrogen-filled, and it looks quite durable with an impact absorbing covering. The case is useful. I recommend it highly.
Great value
Excellent image quality for the price and the magnification is about as much as I would want in a compact hand-held monocular. I was looking for something lightweight to carry on hikes and while canoeing. The Solo works perfectly for that. There are two minor things I wish were different - 1) I wish it had a snap instead of Velcro on the belt case; it can be quite loud when opening which isn't good when looking at wildlife. 2) I wish it had a lens cap for when I'm not using the case; I can add one to the eyepiece, but the shape of the body doesn't allow one to fit easily on the other end. Overall I am very pleased and would purchase it again knowing what I know now.
Handy little optic
I bought this to tote around when full size binos weren't practical or when birding/hiking isn't primary purpose - long commute on public transit, motorcycling, walking around the city - but still didn't want to miss out on seeing good birds. They took some getting used to, I find they're easier to stabilize and focus with the eye cup rolled in and used with sunglasses. The lanyard is weird, I am looking for a different solution. I wish it had protectors for the eye and objective lenses instead of the big case, but, I still throw it in my pocket (sans case) all the time for walks and it's holding up fine.
Would love to leave a backpacking review except...
I accidentally had this shipped to my parents house multiple states away and my mom, an avid birdwatcher, stole it. She said quote “mine!! all mine!!” “this thing is nice. it has a good scope or lens or whatever”. She also stated she will never use her bulky binoculars again and loves the view of the hawks in the backyard. My mother originally gave me bad sight through genealogy and now once again through theft.
Small and light!
Carrying my 8x30 binoculars on day hikes is fine, but for backpacking trips they are just too heavy. I don't need optics to ID most birds encountered in the backcountry in our area, but still want to carry optics to help discern bear from boulder or check out the odd unexpected bird while backpacking. I considered a monocular and read good reviews online about this small, lightweight, name-brand model. I prefer buying from REI, which luckily had the best price. While the optics don't match those of my Swarovski binoculars (of course), this is a great little monocular. I ordered another highly-rated monocular priced at 4x the cost of this one, wanting to compare it to this Vortex, and found the differences to be almost indiscernible—and not worth the added weight, bulk and cost. So I returned that one. I look forward to having this along on backpacking trips, and meanwhile am happy to tuck this handy little monocular into my pocket when I leave the house for walks.
Go for it!
Works great! I got it for backpacking but it works so well I just keep it in my car and use it as my primary birding tool.
Pirates eye.
Took a long shot on this guy, and am glad I did, great for scouting, recon and animal watching. This is a must have for anyone from a boat to hunting.
Lightweight, compact and good optics
Very nice little monocular. Perfect for pack packing.
Surprising Image Quality and Easy to Use
I'm very pleased with this monocular. It is so handy to keep in my pack or handlebar bag and I prefer the mono to binoculars for quick easy use and low weight. Great for spotting birds or a quick look up the road. 8x is just fine for me. I think 10x would be too hard to hold steady.
Just what I needed
Really enjoying using this monocular. I'm legally blind in one eye, so binoculars don't really work well for me.
