Not good for mountain biking.
After a horrible experience with the 820, I thought I would give the 830 a try. I would not recommend this unit for mountain biking. While the GPS on my phone routinely shows a single track lap to be around 9.2 miles, the Garmin 830 ranges from 7.6 - 7.8 miles. I have tried changing the tracking method from Smart to 1-sec and this does not seem to have any effect. It appears that the GPS antenna might just be under powered and looses connection in the trees.
Garmin got this one right.
After returning the 530, which seemed to be a neat unit but had serious issues with quality control (cheap feeling buttons with one that only worked about 1/4 of the time), I bought the 830. I'm incredibly impressed. The touch screen works better than my old 810, routing seems to work well, and the GPS tracks seem accurate for the road. It's also fast and has exceptional battery life. I'm sure I'll run across a few more bugs as I ride more (it's a Garmin after all), but so far this is the best Garmin product I've ever purchased!
So Happy...
If you owned Edge 820 isn't hard to fall in love with 830:-) But beside Garmin fix everything also add some new features. I own 830 for 10 days and use it in NY , DC and Boston, Things that make me Happy are, GREAT screen touch sensitivity amazing. Connect with Satellite signal fast. Browsing is so cool now and pleasant. During my ride in DC this GPS brings you to Bike paths so easy. This GPS is for my Brompton folding bike, and for me is just great Toy..... Love it, will not thanks to Garmin i know they will screw something up down to road. :-))))
Outstanding!!
So, I initially ordered the 530 and while waiting, after hearing about button issues, ordered the 830 instead. As it turns out the 530 unit I got was an excellent unit that performed as advertised and exceeded expectations for a cycling unit. No issues at all. Only gripes were more philosophical about state of industry. Now the 830 came in yesterday and I am beyond impressed. The responsiveness of the touch screen is on par with my android galaxy note 9. The user interface is intuitive, no lag on processing. This is simply an impressive product and, no I have not ridden in rain or with gloves yet, but if this performs as well in those conditions I can't see any reason to get any other unit a this point. $100 more for the touchscreen may be much for some, so there fits the 530, but over time this will be worth it for me. I highly highly recommend this product. (as usual will update review if impression changes after few long rides with unit).
Love it!
* Don't underestimate the utility of the touch screen (good response time) - I've read buttons are better and cheaper, but I disagree if you like to 'explore', manipulating the map is a must and touch screen makes this so much easier. * Integration of Strava and Trailforks is huge improvement * Suggest to Garmin: allow custom screen settings for each activity - my example is using in spin class I need to set the backlight to stay on, but always forget to change it back to 15 secs, so setting it to stay on only for indoor cycling would be useful * I also appreciate the integration with wearables (e.g. Fenix 5s) * keep it up Garmin!
Overall I like it...
This is my third Edge. They keep getting better. Like the size and the screen is great. Love the LiveTrack feature. Courses are cool...but there are a couple of misses. For mountain bike trails that loop (I do laps on a lot of my mountain bike rides), the 830 gets “lost” a lot — and restarts a ride when it “finds” itself. Basically, the course becomes nearly useless. Also, for climbing — especially on the stats after a ride, gradient information would be really nice to have. When you rock a 19% climb, you want to see that in the data. You ONLY see that when you are doing a course. A very good stat to include in the Connection app.
Feature Rich
I had a Garmin 810, but sadly the battery was dying. I upgraded to the 830 and WOW! there are a lot of added features. Although it is taking a little time to get used to the new menu structure, in some ways it is easier, and in others more confusing. There is a lot packed into this little unit, and I am having fun exploring them all. It will take a little time to get well versed in the menu and how it helps me train. No issues have been experienced thus far. Paired to all my external devices without issue, tracks GPS really well. I am excited about creating my videos with the metrics from this device for my rides and to see how it comes out.
great so far
No button issues, and the unit is pretty awesome so far. Processor seems quick, but there is still some garmin lag. Its like the processor stumbles over its own toes at times, but it puts the 20 series to shame. Road accuracy seems good, will check singletrack accuracy and update. Skip the 530, go for the touchscreen, and extra mapping, it’s worth it. Very happy I waited on the 520 advanced and went with the 30 series.
I am still puzzled.
I have had my Edge 830 for about 2 weeks, and still cannot have it function properly. It does not seem to be able to connect to the GPS signal in a stable way. I did all that Garmin suggests to do, and yet out of about 10 rides, there was only once when my GPS signal worked from start to finish. On every other ride, it either never worked or was so spotty that it was useless. I live in a densely populated areas, so I don't understand why it's not working properly. I suspend my judgment, and hope it'll improve, otherwise I will return it. Every other feature is excellent, but I bought it as a GPS computer, not to know the weather or the calories I burn.

Great Battery life.
The 820 was great but it had a very short battery life so I could not use it. The 830 excel here. The maps when you follow a route iare great mainly the mountains profile as you climb. My only negative is that I can not hear the cars using the Varia radar, it was excellent in the 820. I believe the problem is in the location of the speaker. I use an integrated handlebar with a bracket that moves the Garmin 2 inches in front of the handlebar that may make the matters worst but again, with the same setup the 820 was perfect for sound. I hope whenever the design the next model, use a louder speaker or move the speaker to a different location, back perhaps.
