Just one thing
I thought I really did my research on this coat but admit I missed one thing. The coat is attractive, fits great and looks great. I also love all the pockets and that they all zip to keep things safe. It has a nice hood and zippers in the underarms for venting. All great things! Unfortunately, what i did not anticipate was what makes it so warm is the lining that faces your body is like the shiny heat reflecting material you see on those emergency blankets. The problem with that is it does not breathe at all and any sweating makes the lining wet. I can literally run my hand across the lining and it it comes back wet.
Whirlybird kept me comfortable in all temps
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great jacket. Love the versatility and all the pockets. Kept me warm on the slopes at Sun Valley in single digits and colder. Tried my hand at cross country skiing on this trip and was so glad I could zip out the liner and just wear the shell (with pit zips open) - it’s quite the work out and the jacket was perfect!!!
Checks all the boxes
Found this while searching for a replacement for my beloved 25+ year old Lowe Alpine, so this was no ordinary search. The bold style was a refreshing standout in a bland cross-vendor field. This one checked all but one of the boxes on my list: pit zips, waterproof, comfortable collar when zipped all the way, hood that will stay on, enough lengh to cover my rear end, adjustable cuffs, comfortable pockets, and not too crunchy-sounding. The only feature missing was a bottom-up zipper, but it still won a feature-to-feature comparison with an NF jacket. After wearing it for about a month now, my favorite aspect is the warmth of the inner jacket; it is surprisingly cozy without being too hot and the cream color is refreshingly elegant. I was not searching for a jacket that separates, but I have found myself wearing the inner coat alone more often than with the shell. I rarely take the time to snap it all back together, but that has not caused any problems. During my curation process, I discovered I needed an XL due to hip size, though it makes the body and the shoulders quite large on me- just something I have to live with. Some in my circle raised an eyebrow at the bold pattern, but those who "get" me loved it. I even had a jogger shout, "love your jacket!" to me as she ran by.
Whirlibird Dark Nocturnal Folk Blur
Both outer & inner layers are light, warm & easily removed. Excellent jacket for cold (with the jacket inside) & warmer weather skiing (if you only wear the shell). Fits great, size Medium gives me room for undelayers. Shell is beautiful and covers my rear so well! Shafer Canyon pants go so well with the Dark Nocturnal Folk Blur print.
LOVE IT
I bought this jacket a week or so ago in prep of the harsh MI winters. So far I have only used the inner jacket by itself, but I found that warm enough for around 40 degree weather so I’m sure I will be plenty warm once colder temps hit. Aside from the sleeves being a little long, it fits great. I listened to other reviewers and sized up. I wear an XL in other jacket brands (Carhartt, lands end, Columbia fleece) but got an XXL and glad I did, otherwise it would not fit. Very happy with this purchase! For reference, I am 5’4, 200lbs and wear a size 16 jean (carry most of my weight in my stomach, butt and thigh)
Not Built Well For Curvy Women
If you’re like me and are tall with a larger chest then this may not be a good option. I’m 5’11” around 200 lbs and the XL fit well around the chest but was huge around stomach. When I took the shell off and wore just the middle layer underneath it looked ridiculous. With the shell on overtop it looked fine, so if you’re always planning on wearing it that way then it may work well for you. Expected to love this coat and got it in two sizes to make sure one would fit but both are going back.
good fit and warmth.. but came with stains
jacket is great but found stain that doesn't come out with rubbing.
Warm and waterproof
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] great jacket. I’ve only worn it once so far to take my kids sledding. We have a ski trip planned in about a week and that was the main purpose for the purchase. My old ski jacket was just a shell and I would get very cold. I bought this identical coat for my husband in December and he’s worn it on a couple ski trips and says it’s excellent. I love all the pockets. They’re perfectly position for a day skiing on the mountain.
Perfect for the winter outdoors
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this for my November trip to Iceland! Having three coats in one made it a perfect for travel! Being that Iceland is cold and super windy this jacket surpassed my expectations! I was never cold! I stood under waterfalls and I never got wet under the jacket! I climbed glaciers and actually got hot! I highly recommend this jacket for winter sports and activities! I’m 5’8/185 and the XL for perfect!
Faithful to the Whirlibird
I had my last Whirlibird Interchange for 11 years. The shell still is FLAWLESS (aside from the fact that I grew out of it).I did everything in that coat. For sizing, keep in mind, you are essentially wearing two layers with this jacket, so I'd size up so the inner layer isn't too tight. I bought a M, and it fit great...but almost too well, and I needed a large. That being said, when separate, the liner and shell both layer over and under other things really well. I run hot, so it's nice that I can wear the shell with a lighter layer while skiing, while the inner liner I can wear during the day to stay warm doing other activities.
