Pricy, hope it works well, trusted name.
Every review starts at zero stars and works up. The price is pretty high. I have never bought one of these before but it seemed the easiest way to plug in the Dometic refrigerator instead of buying a battery and related electronics separately. I have used it twice. Once, after about 5 hours it was down to 60% in a hot car trying to keep at 33 degrees. Hopefully it will work out this summer driving out west. I plan to plug the fridge in to the car while driving and plug the fridge into the battery while not driving. I kept the box this came in to keep the battery and the two cords for the fridge and the two cords for this all together.
Overall I’m happy, but the PLB40 needs refinement.
I have had the PLB40 for years now and although it has been fairly reliable, it has its flaws, or at least mine does. My biggest complaint is that my screen has always had issues. As soon as I plug it in to charge, the screen slowly disappears. If it ever gets warm at all it seems that’s when the problems happen. And not even extreme, even just mildly warm. I also can’t stand the alarm that won’t stop once the sun goes down and the battery is no longer taking on charge from my solar panel anymore. I wish that was a feature that could be shut off. I wish it would just stop charging and then pick back up when the sun comes up. I do with it had a 120v outlet so I didn’t have to plug an inverter into it for the times I need to plug in a 120v. Mine flashed the battery symbol at random times, last time it happened, it was charged to 100%So yeah, overall, I have been happy. The little bugs just make me nervous while using it because I have absolutely no clue if it’s charging and what the battery percentage is at.

Portable Battery for the WIN
Lately I have been in search of a portable battery that was small and could power a few products while camping. I wasn’t too familiar with Dometic as a brand so I started researching the company and reliazed they had a great reputation with the appliances they make. I decided to give their battery a shot due to how light weight and small it is compared to other products out there. It has done everything I would want it to do and more. It charges quite fast which is something I enjoy as well as it powers my lights, my laptop, my GoPro batteries, and my iPhone. The next item on my list is one of their portable fridges!Â
Power for days! Perfect for camping!
This battery unit is specifically built to work in conjunction with any Dometic CFX line of fridges. This unit is more compact that all the other portable batteries on the market. I use this to power my Dometic CFX 75DZ fridge. The battery is able to be drained down to 4% battery before it shutdown safely. I recommend any Dometic fridge owners to utilized the 2-pin plug to power their fridge instead of the 12v. Gave this a 5 star for it’s compact size, power output and ease of use.
Love this battery.
I have been using the PlB40 for 4 years in my Jeep. That is where it stays for most the year. I bring it and the fridge into my office in the winter. For the rest f the year it’s charged via a 100w solar panel on my roof rack. It also keeps my BlackVue battery charged for the front and rear dashcams. Works flawlessly. However recently I decided to hook up my Uniden SDS-200 and a Touch Scanner remote head. That was a bad idear I guess. It short circuited the USB ports. No fuses blown. Now it is discharging and displays the warning signal. Looking to have it repaired but waiting on Dometic to tell me why short circuited. I would buy again.
A MUST have for travel!
I am using the PLB40 to keep our dometic CFX 35 cold when we are not driving. I keep it connected to our plug in the bed of our truck and the CFX35 so that when we are driving I can charge the PLB 40 and then when we stop the PLB 40 takes over. Works like a champ!
Great compact battery - not comprehensive
Love my PLB - it’s not as comprehensive as other battery banks but it performs well. Using solar is not obvious as you don’t get an input reading. The big flaw is the 12vdc 2 pin output - I cannot find any plugs in the USA to fit this - as a result it is completely redundant and I only use the standard cigarette type output and the USB’s. I have a Dometic fridge which is permanently plugged into to the standard 12v cigarette style output which means I can’t use any other non-usb devices. Please please Dometic - please provide a plug or change the output to a standard socket otherwise I may have to replace the PLB for a Goal Zero or Jackary....
Hi Balthazaar- Thanks for leaving a review! We just wanted to let you know that we made the 2-pin threaded 12VDC output specifically for your Dometic powered cooler. The 2-pin is built in to the 12V plug supplied with every Dometic CFF, CFX, and CFX3. Simply twist the bottom portion of the plug and the adapter will come apart revealing the 2-pin plug. We love the 2-pin because of the piece of mind it gives- its threaded and won't back out!
Disappointing outcome
I have a plb40 battery, a ps150a solar panel and 2 cf50 fridges. Just recently brought the set ( battery 1 fridge and solar panel ) for 7-day bush camping. The outcome is quite disappointing that the fully charged battery went flat in about 12 hours over the night and the solar panel was no where close to storing out the battery to power the fridge on a ongoing basis. Had to rely on camping mates batteries sources to keep the fridge running. Appreciate your advice to remediate the above situation. also realised that my Cf fridges ( in fact I have 2 of them ) do not have the 2 pin adaptors as indicated in one of the earlier reviews.
Wish I had gotten this sooner!
This is one of those 'why didn't I get this sooner' gadgets! I use this in my Jeep to power my car fridge (37qt) over night. On the Jeep battery, when the Jeep is not running like over night, the fridge does not hold the temperature. So instead I use the Dometic battery pack. It has kept the fridge running for up to two and a half days on a single 100% charge with NO issues keeping temperature. I've used the USB ports to charge my phone, camera batteries, and a few other devices as well. Using the 12VDC plug during the day it easily charges back up to 100% while driving on the trail and is then ready for the next night. It's also an extra couple of USB power ports for other devices while driving. It has been a huge improvement to my off-grid weekend power management!
Good stuff
So far so good, bought it to primarily power a Dometic CFX75DZ for weekend IMSA races, the beach, whatever, and just have the electricity (on the beach). It’s big advantage is the smart electrical internals, can have it plugged into 12v car outlet while powering cooler, and utilizing AC inverter. Very nice, like the no nonsense package, handle, and display. Plan on combining it w/ Overland Solar Ranger Charger and Controller for even more adaptability for longer trips, as the cooler is a power hog, especially when using it a freezer.
