Great pants, but lacking features of competitors

These pants fit great and are fairly well designed. But I bought pants at the same time from two other companies (Mammut and LaSportiva), and ended up returning the Trailbreaker's as they came up short in some key areas. One example is the cuff. The OR pants have a pretty wide cuff, which worked well with my plastic boots, but not with my nordic boots. Competitors' pants had adjustable cuffs that worked with all my boots. Another example is the zippered side vents. The OR's had no mesh backing behind the zipper, which means it is easier for snow to get in when unzipped. All the other pants had the mesh backing.

Would definitely recommend

I’m a big fan of Outdoor Research and these pants don’t disappoint. High quality materials and a flattering fit. I love the side venting zippers and beacon packet. The one thing I will say is the fit is a little funky though. I expected them to be a similar fit to the OR Cirques but they are a bit tighter through the thighs. If you have muscular thighs then I would recommend sizing up so you can fit layers underneath.

Awesome

These are excellent ski touring pants. I use them in fall /spring in particular for skiing in Canadian Rockies, when I don't need the warmth of full gore tex and want more breathability for skinning in warmer temps. They fit very well and the soft shell dumps heat well, and added half zip means you can get rid of even more heat... I usually wear a pair of thin tights under them, but you could wear them with nothing in really warm temps. I like the zipper pockets. In total, well thought out, excellent purpose specific pants.

Perfect for snowy/alpine hikes

These pants are exactly what I was looking for. I do a lot of hiking and can easily get overheated. These are not insulated but they keep the wind off of you. They are so stretchy and I was able to do scrambling without any restriction. I got compliments on the color. They even have a extra protective layer at the ankle to protect from crampons. They have vents which i love

Great pants for outdoor winter activities

I was replacing my winter kit and purchased these pants to wear when trail-breaking in winter conditions. I paired it with light base layer leggings as I tend to overheat quickly. These pants were flexible and kept me dry and comfortable. I appreciated details such as the waist micro-adjustment and the side venting in particular to prevent clamminess on long hiking days. I winter camp and being able to shed these pants and hang to dry overnight was clutch. These pants are durable and held up to be scratched and scraped by rocks, branches, and boot changes without feeling cumbersome.

runs small

Very well made, but heavy material for a soft shell. (I was planning on using them for winter hiking). Otherwise, I loved the style and features. These pants run small, so I had to return them. If they fit, I would have kept them (even despite the weight of them) because they are very well made.

Sizing off

I usually a solid medium with a preference for short length when possible. OR's medium runs HUGE. I have the waist tightened as much as possible but still need a belt which feels awkward when I'm wearing a backpack. Pros: I like the beacon pocket with clip. I don't have to worry about moving my beacon if I add/remove layers and my harness tends to slide under my arm which is also not comfortable when wearing a pack. Yay pocket! Cons: the vent zippers are right next to the pocket zippers and I tend to open the vents first. I haven't dropped anything down my leg yet but it's good to know that the gaiters are tight and I shouldn't lose anything if it gets dropped into my pants and not the pocket. Bottomline: good idea but execution needs some work.

Upgrade from a 10 year old pair of OR Windstopper Softshells

These are the softshells you want. All the best features including integrated inner gaiters. Makes snowshoeing while pulling a toddler on a sled a breeze! Makes raking wet leaves on a freezing cold PNW rainy Saturday less of a chore! Comfortable is an understatement. Let's just say if my employer had a more lax dress code, I would wear these to office (PS...these pants do not create the dreaded "Seinfleld Swooshing" sound commonly associated with weather resistant fabrics). Another 10/10 from a loyal OR customer.

Almost!

So close, guys! These pants are bomber, wersatile ofr any activity, look cool, and have function pockets (!). But the fit is sadly a little off to give the 5-stars. I'm 5'5", 130lbs, shorter legs, and a shape we'll call 'curvy athletic.' I got the small, and while they fit well through the hips, they're overly baggy in the thighs and about 3" too long for me. I have to roll them up so that I don't walk on them. From a tech point of view, they're great. The beacon pocket is awesome and doesn't restrict movement in the thigh, they are durable enough for a 'schwack, breath like a dream, I can fit them over my snowboard boots, and have just the right amount of water/windproofness for those shoulder season ski days. If they made these with a 'short' option, I think they'd be perfect.

10/10 pant - wont buy anything else again.

I love these shell pants. They are great for ski touring as they dont insulate too much but provide a good amount of water repellency and durability. I still fall quite a bit as im newer to skiing and these keep me nice and dry and I dont worry about them ripping or tearing even if I fall into a bush or scrap against a tree. I love the removable ankle cuffs, and the pockets on these are great. The higher waist at the back is great for when im squatting or sitting to keep my back better protected!
