Arcteryx is known for their high-quality products and the Konseal AR shoe is no exception. The fit and finish are superb, with thoughtful details throughout. The upper is durable with reinforcement around the sides. The toe cap is well done and blends almost seamlessly into the upper. The shoes showed no signs of wear, and I wore them a lot. The laces grip well and allowed specific adjustment of tension without having to worry about slippage. The guides for the laces allow them to slide freely when not under tension, so loosening the shoes to take them off is a breeze. Initially the shoes felt stiff, but after a few hikes they broke in nicely and maintained their support. They were comfortable from day one. Sizing was straightforward, Iām usually an 8 or a 39. The sizing chart said an 8 was a 40, so I went with a 40, and they fit great. For reference, I have a wide foot, narrow heel, and a fairly high arch. I solely used them for backpacking over a variety of conditions. Although a little stiff at first, the sole and upper break in after a few wears. If you are looking for a shoe that provides exceptional support and stability, with comfort and agility, these shoes are for you. As the sole broke in, they became just flexible enough in all directions to allow me to feel really agile on uneven and difficult terrain. Even when wet, they didnāt feel heavy, and they dried out quickly. The grip was phenomenal. From slimy rocks and slick roots, to sandy hard-pack, rolling scree, and even snowy conditions, these shoes made me feel confident every time my foot hit the ground. Overall for me, the Konseal AR are amazing shoes. I wouldnāt hesitate to take them on multi-day hikes. Even after a long day of hiking, I still wore them around camp. They were that comfortable. The ability to step with confidence on any terrain, feel nuances in the ground under my feet with good protection, and provide the flexibility and responsiveness of a much less substantial shoe is quite an accomplishment.
These are great day hikers for someone interested in unlimited ankle mobility. I loved traveling with these shoes because they are only exactly as heavy as they need to be. The soles are extremely sturdy and grip the ground really well on uneven terrain, but they are not so big and bulky that they take up half of a weekend suitcase. the purple color is fun, and I have gotten mixed reviews from friends regarding whether or not they like the style. Some love it, and some think it looks a little weird. But, in the end, the fact that they work so incredibly well trumps any naysayers regarding the style. I would definitely recommend these to a friend.
Incredibly comfortable shoes, super grippy and all round amazing shoes for light hiking and rocks. Fell apart after about 1 year purchase, which is about 6 month use (don'tuse them in winter or hight of summer)! Bottoms falling off, sides opening up, just falling apart! It's a very expensive price tag for such a short life span.
Just received today. Feels really comfortable and fits my really narrow feet! Have not tried them outdoors yet. Will do very soon and get back to you if I change my mind!
I was thrilled to be asked to review the Arcāteryx approach shoe. Iāve always been a fan of this companyās clothing line, but have never had the opportunity to try their shoes so my expectations were pretty high. These shoes are definitely more for heavy backpacking than anything else. They have incredible grip due to the Vibram Megagrip outsoles and can handle scree fields like a champ. I found them slightly stiff at first, but with some breaking in, they are becoming more comfortable. I took them out on a 15 mile hike straight out of the box and had no hot spots or areas of discomfort. The arch support is minimal and the insoles are thin, but easily replaceable with a custom insole or aftermarket type if you need more arch support. I slipped in my Superfeet insoles and it turned a good fit into a great fit for me. I think they run a little large, but my insole replacement took up some of that extra room. I would not recommend ordering them online because of the large fit. Itās best to try on in store with your preferred sock. They are sharp enough looking that they will look great out and about in any mountain town. I didnāt have the opportunity to test them in inclement weather, but Iām confident they can handle sloppy, wet, and slippery conditions well.
Excellent and sleek but sturdy shoe for short or mid-distance hikes. Perfect for scrambling and wet or slippery uneven ground. These are sized generously so best to order true size or down half size.
I have worn these almost exclusively since I got them last fall starting with an extended climbing roadtrip. They have held up to the abuse and provided great support on longer approaches with a heavy pack and protected my feet well in rocky terrain. I found them a bit too warm for approaches in the hot desert, but on the other hand the warmth was appreciated on cold days. I find them wider than my previous Arc'teryx shoes. I have a narrow foot so they feel a bit wide for me to use for technical scrambling. However, it was nice to have extra room in the toes after a long day of climbing and to be able to wear thick socks on cold days. I would definitely get another pair!
Very lightweight and much better grip on the rocks than my LOWA Renegade. Great casual day hiking shoes that I like to bring when traveling. The only downside is that the soles are a little more rigid than other hiking shoes, so the heels drop a little when walking. My foot heels slip out of the shoes a little too much than I want. I tried on a smaller size but still has the same problem. It hasnāt affected the performance too much so far. But the dropping/slipping heels give me a sense of insecurity when walking.
After getting over the uncomfortable period of break-in, giving it every opportunity to please, a new problem arose. Dragging down my socks. I wear many different variety of socks, mostly smart wool. Sooner or later, usually sooner, the shoes would pull on my socks and I would have to stop and pull them up. Never has this been an issue with shoes. So strange.
I bought the shoes a month ago and have used the twice. The inside has started to tear. Not exactly the quality I expected from Arcāteryx. The shoe is cute and has a strong hold but I expected better quality.
